🏆 SOTA USM Student Receives Special Mention Award at MIFF Furniture Design Competition 2026

A proud moment for the School of the Arts, Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Product Design student Prathiin Saravanamuthu has received the Special Mention Award at the MIFF Furniture Design Competition (FDC) 2026, held in conjunction with the Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) in Kuala Lumpur.

Competing against 138 entries from 21 design institutes and 16 private institutions, Prathiin progressed from the Top 20 finalists to the Top 10, where he presented his innovative concept before an international panel of judges led by Dr. Eric Leong.

His project, StackaBlock, is a modular bedroom furniture concept designed for Generation Alpha, encouraging children’s learning, creativity, and play through flexible and interactive design.

Adding to this achievement, StackaBlock also received the highest number of public votes during the final stage at MIFF 2026, reflecting strong support from visitors and the wider design community.

This accomplishment reflects the creative excellence, innovative thinking, and future-focused design capability of USM students, especially from the Product Design programme, School of the Arts.

Congratulations to Prathiin Saravanamuthu on this remarkable achievement. May this success inspire more young designers to continue shaping meaningful and innovative futures through design.

Salam takziah atas pemergian Dr. Ahmad Zuhairi bin Abdul Majid (25 April 1966 – 15 Februari 2026).

Allahyarham telah berkhidmat sebagai pensyarah di Bahagian Reka Bentuk Produk, Pusat Pengajian Seni, Universiti Sains Malaysia, dari 19 Jun 2006 hingga 1 Jun 2024. Sepanjang tempoh perkhidmatan, beliau banyak menyumbang kepada pembangunan akademik, pengajaran, penyelidikan serta pembinaan generasi pereka muda yang berwibawa.

Pemergian beliau merupakan satu kehilangan besar kepada universiti dan dunia akademik. Semoga Allah SWT mencucuri rahmat ke atas roh Allahyarham, mengampuni segala dosa dan menempatkan beliau dalam kalangan orang-orang yang beriman dan beramal soleh.

Product Design Interactive Day 2025 was successfully held on 17 December 2025 from 7:30 PM – 10:45 PM. Despite last-minute preparations, the event ran smoothly and was filled with great energy thanks to everyone’s teamwork and commitment.

Heartfelt appreciation to Puan Azlina Khalid, Chair of the Product Design Programme, for her trust and support, and to Dr Asyraf for his guidance as the Advisor. Congratulations to the Project Director, Prathin, and the entire organizing committee for their dedication. Thank you as well to all judges and students from first year to final year for making this event meaningful.

Special thanks to the Dean of SOTA, Product Design lecturers, technicians, Deputy Registrar of SOTA, former Deans, and former lecturers for their presence and support.

From BBQ and communal cooking, ice-breaking sessions, batch performances, TikTok video competition, Best Student Awards, to lucky draws — the night was truly memorable 🎉
