Department of Geoscience, UTP Technology development in petroleum geoscience has been accelerating in the face of declining hydrocarbon reserves worldwide.

Shaping geoscientists since 2006, UTPโ€™s Department of Geoscience (DG) now embarks on a new era under Faculty of Science, Management & Computing (FSMC) and AP Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Latiff โ€” driving innovation from Bachelorโ€™s to PhD programmes. The postgraduate program in petroleum geoscience at UTP gives opportunity to graduates to deepen their knowledge in main petroleum geoscience disciplines and meet the challenging demand from the industry locally and abroad.

With Opening Week for the May 2026 semester just around the corner, itโ€™s a great moment to reflect on one of the defining highlights of the January 2026 semester.
We started the year with significant news โ€” the official change in nomenclature for our programmes, marking an important milestone in our academic and strategic direction.
This change was purposeful and future-focused. It aligns our programmes with emerging industry trends and evolving professional standards, enhances their relevance, strengthens recognition among employers, and ensures our graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate future industry challenges.
January 2026 truly set the tone for progress, adaptability, and impact. As we prepare to open the doors to the May 2026 semester, we do so with confidence and renewed momentum.

The Department of Geoscience was honoured to be represented by the Chair of the Department at the Libyan Students Appreciation and Graduating Dinner, held on 24 April 2026.

The evening celebrated the academic journey and accomplishments of our Libyan students and was further distinguished by the presence of H.E. Mr Mohamed A. M. Attia, Ambassador of Libya to Malaysia, alongside university leadership, industry partners, and invited guests.

The Department records its sincere appreciation to the Faculty of Engineering, in collaboration with the Petroleum Engineering Department, for organizing such a wellโ€‘executed and memorable dinner. The event reflected the strong collaborative spirit and shared commitment to student development within the geoscience and energy disciplines.

We also acknowledge with gratitude the continued support of the Libyan National Oil Companies, whose sponsorship has played a vital role in enabling advanced education and professional training in petroleum geoscience.

To our MSc Petroleum Geoscience (by coursework) graduates, congratulations on reaching this important milestone. It has been an honour to have you as part of the Department of Geoscience. We wish you every success in your future endeavours and warmly welcome you to return to DG UTP should you choose to pursue your PhD journey with us.
