Department of Geoscience, UTP Technology development in petroleum geoscience has been accelerating in the face of declining hydrocarbon reserves worldwide.

Shaping geoscientists since 2006, UTPโ€™s Department of Geoscience (DG) now embarks on a new era under Faculty of Science, Management & Computing (FSMC) and AP Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Latiff โ€” driving innovation from Bachelorโ€™s to PhD programmes. The postgraduate program in petroleum geoscience at UTP gives opportunity to graduates to deepen their knowledge in main petroleum geoscience disciplines and meet the challenging demand from the industry locally and abroad.

What happens when years of fieldwork adventures, late-night study sessions, laboratory experiences, and lifelong friendships come together again in one place?

On 27 August 2026, the answer was found at the UTP Geoscience Alumni Gathering in Kuala Lumpur.

From fresh graduates taking their first steps in the industry to seasoned professionals with years of experience, our alumni came together for an evening filled with meaningful conversations, professional networking, and cherished memories. It was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, exchange insights, celebrate achievements, and reflect on the journey that shaped them into the geoscientists they are today.

The gathering was a reminder that while our alumni may now be working across different sectors, organisations, and even countries, the bond forged through their Geoscience journey at UTP remains strong.

New connections were made.
Old stories were shared.
Memorable moments were relived.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Khairul Arifin, Director of the Alumni Relations Office and our Dean of the Faculty of Science, Management, and Computing (FSMC), Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Mohd Hilmi Hassan for taking the time to join us and support this meaningful gathering. Your presence made the evening even more special.

Most importantly, thank you to all our alumni who attended. Your continued support, achievements, and connection with the Department are what make our Geoscience community truly exceptional.

While this gathering celebrated our past and present, the journey continues. As our alumni help shape the industry, we remain committed to working closely with our partners to shape the future of Geoscience education.

Following our fruitful visit to Samarinda, East Kalimantan on 10 September 2026, the Department of Geoscience, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, continued its regional engagement with a visit to STT MIGAS, Balikpapan, Indonesia on 11 September 2026.

We were warmly welcomed by the Rector of STT MIGAS, Dr. M. Lukman, ST., MT., along with academic staff from the Geology Department and Petroleum Engineering Department.

The visit provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties and explore future collaborations between DG UTP and STT MIGAS, focusing on:

โœ…Geology field trips in Balikpapan and Samarinda, East Kalimantan
โœ…Opportunities for postgraduate studies at UTP for STT MIGAS academic s
โœ…Short courses and professional training programmes offered by UTP

The discussions reflected our shared commitment to advancing education, research, and professional development in the geoscience and petroleum disciplines. We are optimistic that these conversations will pave the way for impactful collaborations and long-term academic partnerships between our institutions.

Our QEB1054 Geochemistry students recently had the privilege of attending a Special Talk by Prof. Dr. Alfredo Borges De-Campos from the Institute of Geology, UNICAMP, Brazil.

The session provided valuable insights into the fascinating world of geochemistry, exposing students to international perspectives, current research, and real-world applications in the geosciences field.

Opportunities like these enrich our students' learning experience, broaden their horizons, and connect them with leading experts from around the globe. It's all part of our commitment to nurturing future geoscientists who are ready to make an impact on the world stage.

On 10 September 2026, our visit to Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (FMIPA), Universitas Mulawarman (UNMUL), Samarinda opened exciting possibilities for deeper academic engagement between FSMC, UTP and FMIPA, UNMUL.

We were honoured to be received by Prof. Ratna, Dean of FMIPA, and had a productive exchange on initiatives that could benefit students, researchers, and faculty members from both institutions.

Among the opportunities discussed:

On 13 August 2026, the Department of Geoscience had the privilege of engaging in a productive discussion with the Faculty of Geo-resources and Geotechnical Engineering, Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC).

The meeting explored potential areas of collaboration in academic exchange, research initiatives, student mobility, capacity building, and knowledge sharing between our institutions. These discussions reflect our shared commitment to advancing geoscience education, fostering innovation, and addressing regional challenges through collaborative partnerships.

We look forward to building a strong and mutually beneficial relationship that will create meaningful opportunities for students, researchers, and faculty members from both institutions.
