J.G van der Wath Secondary exists under misconceptions based on the past. The school was established in 1921 and reined through the era of apartheid. It was only accessible to the then advantaged group of society and therefore boasted with tremendous support from parents and the administration for education. Currently the trend has changed and a total of 598 are enrolled of whom 99% hail from the
previously disadvantaged community. Our class groups range between 40-45 learners per class. We boast with annual best results in grades 11 and 12 who write external national examinations. Our school has been crowned among the best schools in the country as the results clearly show. We have a small team of staff consisting of young and old of whom the young is in the majority. Our learners take part in a variety of after school programs and activities among others sport- soccer, netball, volleyball, basketball and rugby. We have social and educational clubs such as the TADA, Peer educators, the very successful school choirl, Chess club, Environmental club as well as the Maths and Science clubs. As with all competitive sports and activities we are regularly in dire need of travel to take part in regional and national competitions. The teaching team comprises of the Principal - Mr. Williams, assisted by Mrs Imelda Benade-Petha as HOD for Commerce and Social Sciences, Mrs Julia Iiyambo as HOD for Maths and sciences and last but not the least, Ms Almien Brinkmann as HOD for languages, as well as the able secretaries Ms Diener and Ms. Ouses and 28 very qualified teachers!
