Celebrating Namibia’s sustainability champions 🌱🏆

The 5th Namibia Sustainable Development Awards brought together leaders, organisations and individuals driving sustainable development and innovation across the country.

The biennial awards, hosted by the Environmental Investment Fund in partnership with the Sustainable Development Advisory Council, recognised excellence through 15 awards across 11 categories.

Among the standout honours was the Thought Leadership Award, a ministerial award recognising a leader whose transformative innovation elevates their organisation into a national sustainability role model. The award was won by scientist Peter Tarr.

The Pioneer in Journalism category also recognised outstanding media work, with Zee Media taking Best Digital, Hertha Ekandjo of NBC winning Best Television, and Absalom Shigwedha named Best Print Journalist.

The awards were supported by Gondwana Collection Namibia, BDO, Bank Windhoek and Coca-Cola.

Vice President Witbooi calls for stronger pathways from education to economic independence

Vice President Lucia Witbooi has stressed the need to build ecosystems that help young Namibians move beyond education into skills development, innovation and economic independence.

Delivering the keynote address at the 5th Namibia Sustainable Development Awards, Witbooi also called for youth opportunities to be inclusive, emphasising that no young person should be left behind in Namibia’s sustainable development journey.

The biennial awards, hosted by the Environmental Investment Fund (EIF) alongside the Sustainable Development Advisory Council, were held under the theme “empowering the youth of Namibia for a sustainable future” at Mercury Hotel in the capital.

From recognising talent and achievement to conversations about the economic potential of the sectors, the CST Awards set the tone for what lies ahead.

Deputy Minister Dino Balloti highlighted the opportunity to leverage tourism by investing in sport and the cultural and creative industries, while calling for continued collaboration between government and the private sector.

The evening brought together industry leaders, creatives, athletes and changemakers ahead of the CST Expo, which kicks off on Wednesday.

CST AWARDS: DEPUTY MINISTER CALLS FOR GREATER INVESTMENT IN SPORT AND CREATIVE INDUSTRIES

Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture Dino Balloti says Namibia has an opportunity to leverage the economic value of tourism by investing in sport and the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs).

Speaking at the CST Awards in Windhoek on Tuesday night, Balloti stressed the importance of using data to guide public spending rather than sentiment, while also recognising the private sector’s role in complementing government efforts to grow the three industries.

“Public spend must always be justified by data, never by sentiment. There are always going to be competing priorities and that is just the tough reality that we face,” said Balloti.

He also called for greater private-sector support, saying “the sectors that we are championing this evening still require more.”

The Creative. Sport. Tourism (CST) Expo gets underway tomorrow, 2 September, and runs until Friday 3 September 2026.

Former Robbin Island prisoner Helao Sh*tyuwete dies

Helao Sh*tyuwete, a former Robben Island political prisoner, veteran of Namibia's liberation struggle, author, and labour rights advocate, has died at the age of 92. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at his home in the presence of his wife, Jane, just days after his birthday on August 25. He is survived by his wife, two children, and extended family, with memorial and funeral arrangements to be announced.
