*Executive Director of NINLAN, Prof. Ogbonna Onuoha, Advocates Collaborative Efforts for Indigenous Language Preservation at 37th CLAN; Offers to Host Next Conference*

The Executive Director of the National Institute for Nigerian Languages (NINLAN), Professor Ogbonna Onuoha, has underscored the vital need for multi-stakeholder collaboration in developing and preserving Nigeria’s indigenous languages and cultural heritage.

Delivering a goodwill address at the 37th Conference of the Linguistic Association of Nigeria (37th CLAN) on Wednesday 23rd September, 2026, Professor Onuoha emphasized the indispensable role of local and state governments in language development initiatives.

He urged state and local authorities to look beyond traditional infrastructural metrics and actively celebrate progress in developing their native languages. Language, he noted, serves as the most fundamental driver of effective communication, social cohesion, and community identity.

Furthermore, Professor Onuoha charged linguists and researchers to adopt a more systematic, deliberate approach toward the study and promotion of Nigerian indigenous languages.

Concluding his address, the Executive Director extended a formal plea and invitation to the leadership of LAN to grant NINLAN the privilege of hosting the 38th CLAN at its main campus in Aba.

COMMUNITY SERVICE: ED LAUDS NIS (SECONDARY) ALUMNI

The Executive Director, Prof. Ogbonna Onuoha, has showered praises on the NINLAN Demonstration Secondary School, now NINLAN International Schools (Secondary) Alumni, for her voluntary contributions to the development of NIS. He was excited at the curious and active involvement of the Alumni in helping to maintain standards at the NIS through rehabilitation of dilapidated infrastructure and furniture.

The ED made his feelings known during an interaction with principal officers of the Association in his office recently. He had sent for the leaders of the Alumni when he sighted seventy benches and a counter under construction during an inspection visit to the NIS; and was told that the pieces of furniture, meant for the dining hall, were being provided by the Alumni of the Secondary arm of NIS.

“I am pleased to welcome a group of young people who has deemed it necessary to help the institution that gave her basic education. You are fellow dreamers for NIS. I hope to open an Alumni Hall of Fame to motivate you and upcoming generations of NIS who shall be invited here for home-coming ceremonies in the years ahead”.

Responding to an enquiry by the visitors on the reason for the change of name from ‘Demonstration’ to ‘International’, the ED explained that the school has demonstrated for a long time since its inception in 1993 and has now gone international as it was getting stronger and upgrading. He quelled the fears of the visitors on whether the name was changed as a result of a merger or takeover by a new owner.

On behalf of the Institute’s Management, Prof. Onuoha commended the Association for the initiative and requested the leaders to extend Management’s appreciation to other members who were not present.

The Vice-President of the Association, Kelechi Akwarandu, explained that the Alumni has been on board for about five years; and that it was well structured with chapters in various States of the Federation. She noted that the invitation by the ED to appreciate the Alumni would inspire her to do more. She was accompanied by the General Secretary, Ngozi Precious Nwogu; Legal Adviser, Goodnews Nnadozie; Chizalam Emuchay, a member; and the Vice-Principal (Administration), NINLAN International Schools ( Secondary), Mr. Amos-Uhegbu, Chibuisi.

The Alumni promised to build a comprehensive website and portal for the NIS through its software engineers.

NINLAN EMBRACES YEIDEP PROGRAMME

ED INAUGURATES CRITICAL VISIBILITY COMMITTEE ON NINLAN

The Executive Director, Prof. Ogbonna Onuoha, in a ceaseless drive to increase the visibility of the Institute across the country, has inaugurated a Critical Visibility Committee on NINLAN (CVCN).

Inaugurating the committee in the ED's Boardroom, he took the members through the onerous task of making NINLAN a household name across Nigeria and in boosting enrollment into its academic programmes.

He noted that it was crucial that parents/guardians of and young people aspiring to further their education should be made to have NINLAN as an institution of choice, especially as it was on the verge of commencing its autonomous degree programmes and to as well believe in the economic viability of its programmes, particularly in Nigerian languages.

The committee made up of fourteen members of staff and two social/traditional media practitioners is chaired by Dr. Heavens Obasi of the Institute's Mass Communication department and is mandated to drive extra awareness and visibility for NINLAN through:
• outdoor publicity/placement of notices in churches, marketplace, streets, schools, etc;
• enlightening Education Secretaries of Local Government Areas in Abia State of NINLAN's First degree, NCE, Postgraduate diploma, and Certificate programmes;
• instituting annual mini-cultural festivals/debates or essay competitions in indigenous languages for secondary schools;
• raising sufficient awareness to usher in new waves of enrollment, projects, and internally-generated-revenue, among others.

Other members of the committee include Dr. U. Epepe; Mr. G. Ugbor; Mr. M. Ogbonna; Mr. C. Azubuike (Kaka Media); Mr. I. Nwokoma (blogger/journalist); Dr. J. Chikezie; Dr. A. Amazu; Mr. I.
