Brief History of NACSP
The National Association of Criminologists and Security Practitioners of Nigeria (NACSP) is an umbrella organization of criminologists, security practitioners and related disciplines; academic world, student bodies, interest groups, security industries, and national security agencies which strive at professionalism. It is a non-profit making organization whose membership pursuit is scholastic, scientific, metaphysic, cultural/traditional and professional knowledge concerning the measurement, etiology, consequences, detection, prevention, control and treatment of crime and delinquency including the victims of these vices internationally by providing networking opportunities through which members could exchange ideas, knowledge, methods, advice, education and working assignments using scientific techniques/security technology, cultural and traditional techniques to forge ahead professional linkage and to promote the welfare of all members of the Association on the principle of equality, fairness, justice, peace , security and good governance of the Association and Nigeria at large.
This organization is steered to harness adequate intelligence on National security issues from all available academic and non academic avenues with a view to curbing all manner of security challenges in the country via intelligence policing system. NACSP is community oriented police service (COPS) corps and is a brain child of the Nigerian Society of Criminology (NSC) led by Prof. Femi Odekunle, Prof. Etannibi Alemika, Prof. Darlington Iwarimie-Jaja and its Foundation Members. It is recognized as a powerful intelligence based watchdog with gallant members in various commands in all states of the federation and brigade in institutions of higher learning where criminology and related disciplines are accredited. It was formed on the 16th July 2012 and officially inaugurated on its 1st National Conference on the 15th October, 2016 in Abuja (Forces Command) and is also registered by Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria as Association of Criminologists and Security Experts of Nigeria as an incorporated trustee. The body further held her 1st National working council meeting on the 10th of December, 2016 at EMAB Garden, Wuse 2, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to further expand its National Executive Council and committee members to fast track much of its originating activities.
The initiative was discovered and instituted by Mr. Williams Ekposon, a graduate of Criminology and Security Studies, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and shared among liberated minded members. It will also interest you to know that NACSP nurses the following interest groups:
1. NACSP College of Fellows
2. The Journal of Criminologists and Security Practitioners of Nigeria (JOCASPON) Editorial Board.
3. Foundation for the Victims of Crime (FOVOC).
4. National Hunters Club (NHC).
5. National Association of Criminology and Security Students (NACSS).
The National Association of Criminology and Security Students (NACSS) signed up her facebook group on the 23rd of February 2010, and being the origin or embryo of the entire ideology that advocated and canvassed for it to be adopted as a veritable platform to showcase professionalism whose inaugural meeting held on 16th July, 2012 at La-mems hotel, 40 Nkemba Street, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State was attended by the Intelligentsia Seven (7) who signed the scroll and adopted the nomenclature at 19:40 hours (7:40 pm) and placed it on Cosmic Intelligence Cell and named the mother command ‘Intelligence Command’ as it anchored her modus operandi on the criminal justice system and military. On 24th September, 2012, a proterm executive of six members were selected and formed to pilot the affairs of the Association. The Association paid a courtesy visit to Prof. Darlington Iwarimie-Jaja at University of Port Harcourt and submitted her proposal for affiliation with Nigerian Society of Criminology the same year. The Association celebrated her 1st anniversary on 16thJuly, 2013 at La-mems Hotel, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State (Intelligence Command), her 2nd anniversary on 16th July, 2014 at Millany Hotels& Suites, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State (Intelligence Command), and her 3rd anniversary on 16th July, 2015 at Hon. Nnamdi Wokekoro Hall, NULGE Consulate, Port Harcourt, Rivers State (Anti-militia Command), and her 4th anniversary on 15th October, 2016 at Royal Tropicana Hotels, Utako District, Abuja (Forces Command).
Moreover, it is noteworthy to state that circumstances have bestowed the need to establish NACSP and its subsidiaries given that universities and governmental agencies in Nigeria have given full attention to the scientific study of criminology, intelligence/security studies and the pattern of criminal trends in Nigeria including terrorism, militancy, kidnapping, etc. In facilitating the ongoing efforts of the Nigerian government, especially the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR), who has given premium interest on security, the Association aims at tackling the problems of insecurity and the endemic nature of corruption in the body polity, through application of intelligence policing system and collating of crime statistics for both studies and analyses. It is therefore very important that the Nigerian government which the world holds in high esteem for its relentless efforts at sustaining democracy should support and adopt this initiative, and to embark on breeding a new crop of criminologists and intelligence security personnel, whose collective efforts are expected to assuage this ugly trend currently in vogue in most parts of the country.
We are optimistic to bring innovations to our profession in order to meet the yearnings of Nigerians to enhance and promote the development of academic departments of criminology and security studies or justice education in our institutions of higher learning which will influence an increasing number of students who will learn about criminology and play professional roles in the criminal justice system. We also think that the organization will motivate law enforcement personnel to be more accountable to their duties because students and faculties engaged in locally relevant research activities will assist the justice system personnel with research findings on new methods, techniques, technologies and strategies for dealing with crimes and delinquencies, including the victims of these vices.
The Association is the beam of hope for the future generation and is established to advance professionalism and become a leader in advocating the ideas required to make our criminal justice system democratic to unlock the dominant potential of our noble profession and salvage membership welfares. Nigerian criminologists and security practitioners - persons interested in criminological matters - should be motivated to do research on Nigerian criminology. We should also encourage our brothers and sisters, including members of other criminological bodies outside the shores of this country to share their experiences and exchange information with us to forge professional linkages in the field.
Therefore, we have implicit confidence that our intelligence gathering, pragmatic suggestions/advice, strategies and innovative ideas proffered by eminent and thorough-bred professionals of our noble organization will salvage National Security challenges.
