NUC UNDERTAKES RESOURCE VERIFICATION FOR POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES AT DOU
A team from the National Universities Commission (NUC) has undertaken a Resource Verification Exercise at Dennis Osadebay University (DOU), Asaba, to assess the University’s preparedness and resource capacity for its proposed postgraduate programmes.
Receiving the team in his office, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Samuel Ovuete Aghalino, FHSN, MAAH, MNAL, MNARC, welcomed the team and assured them of Management’s full cooperation throughout the exercise. He noted that the exercise provided an opportunity for the University to assess its preparedness and ensure compliance with the standards prescribed by the NUC.
Responding on behalf of the NUC Team Leads for the various programmes, Prof. Haruna Lawal explained that the exercise was aimed at verifying the availability and adequacy of resources required for the proposed postgraduate programmes. He said the team would assess academic manpower, physical infrastructure, teaching and research facilities, library resources, documentation and other relevant requirements for the commencement of postgraduate programmes. He added that the exercise was not intended merely as an inspection, but also as a constructive engagement to identify areas of strength and those requiring improvement before the programmes commence.
The team subsequently inspected the University’s facilities and resources, including classrooms, laboratories, academic staff offices, library facilities, electronic databases and other infrastructure relevant to postgraduate teaching, supervision and research. It also reviewed academic staffing, supporting personnel and institutional documentation.
At the end of the exercise, the team leads for the various programmes presented their reports to the University Management and commended the University for the warm reception and cooperation accorded the team. They also acknowledged some of the facilities already in place, particularly academic staff office accommodation, while identifying areas requiring further improvement in infrastructure, manpower, library resources, research facilities and documentation.
The programmes reviewed included International Relations, led by Professor Azendu Terungwa; Chemistry, led by Professor Nasinedean M. Baba; Economics, led by Professor A. O. Ovute; Agricultural Economics and Extension, led by Professor Haruna Lawal and Geology, led by Professor Ibrahim Hamidu.
Responding, Professor Aghalino thanked the NUC team for the professional and constructive assessment. He assured the team that Management would address the issues identified and continue to strengthen the University’s infrastructure, manpower and academic resources.
The Vice Chancellor disclosed that the University had commenced the development of new structures, including lecture halls, and was making deliberate efforts to improve office accommodation for staff members.
He also stated that while the University had invested significantly in electronic library resources, Management recognised the continued importance of physical books and would strengthen the hardcopy collection.
“We are not afraid of challenges. We are here to tackle them headlong,” the Vice Chancellor stated, reaffirming Management’s determination to address the identified gaps and build a postgraduate system that meets national and international standards.
The NUC team further commended Dennis Osadebay University for its openness and commitment to continuous improvement, while Management reaffirmed its determination to provide the necessary resources for the successful development of quality postgraduate programmes.
