PROFESSOR USUNOMENA USUNOBUN DELIVERS EDO STATE UNIVERSITY, IYAMHO'S 18TH INAUGURAL LECTURE
Edo State University, Iyamho, held its 18th Inaugural Lecture Series on Wednesday 22nd of July, 2026. The lecture was delivered by Professor Usunomena Usunobun, Professor of Environmental and Biochemical Toxicology.
Titled “Back to Our Roots: The Panacea to Insults and Assaults,” the lecture explored the impact of environmental and biochemical toxins on human health and highlighted the potential of Nigeria's indigenous medicinal plants and leafy vegetables in promoting health and combating disease.
Professor Usunobun shared findings from his research on medicinal plants, including bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina), Annona muricata, Chromolaena odorata, Jatropha tanjorensis, and Rhaphiostylis beninensis, highlighting their antioxidant and protective potential against certain toxic-induced injuries.
He advocated greater investment in research into Nigeria's medicinal plants, increased consumption of nutritious indigenous leafy vegetables, responsible sourcing of medicinal plants, and stronger collaboration between regulatory agencies and higher institutions.
The lecture reinforced the importance of combining indigenous knowledge with modern scientific research to harness Nigeria's rich plant resources for sustainable health and development.
