The need for increased investment in greenhouse agro-business has been emphasized as part of efforts to boost food production, tackle climate challenges and create employment opportunities for youths in the country.
Malam Nuhu Abdullahi, Head of the Greenhouse Unit at the Bauchi State College of Agriculture, made the remark while speaking to Eagle Radio Bauchi.
Malam Abdullahi explained that the greenhouse project was initiated during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, but was reconstructed and upgraded by the Bauchi State Government in collaboration with the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape Project in Bauchi.
According to him, the greenhouse facility, which is regarded as the largest in the entire North-East region of Nigeria, plays a major role in the cultivation of perishable agricultural produce under controlled conditions.
He noted that the greenhouse system allows crops to grow in a more protected environment, thereby reducing the effects of harsh weather conditions, pests and diseases often associated with open-field farming.
Malam Abdullahi further disclosed that each greenhouse unit has the capacity to produce over 300 kilograms of vegetables and other perishable produce during harvest seasons, adding that the initiative can provide sustainable employment opportunities for many youths and women in the state.
In the same vein, the Director of Green-Tech Visionary Enterprise Limited, developers of the Naija Farm Management System, Mr Umar Rabiu Oyakhilome, identified climate change as one of the major challenges affecting agricultural production and crop survival across many parts of the country.
Mr. Oyakhilome explained that the company ains to design modern technological solutions aimed at improving greenhouse management and enhancing productivity.
