Historical Background

The idea of establishing a Catholic University by the Catholic Diocese of Enugu was first presented by the Bishop of Enugu (Emeritus), Most Rev. He wanted a university with the nam

e “Cor Unum”, a university that could represent the unity of all educational activities of the diocese. In spite of the effort of the bishop to the project take off immediately, it did not. The bishop later discussed his plan with Rev. Christian Anieke whom he appointed the provost of the Institute of Ecumenical Education in February 2006. Rev. Anieke understood the importance of a university project for the diocese and took the bull by the horn. He assured the bishop that he would use all the resources he had to ensure that he built a university for the diocese. At a meeting in the Council Chamber of the Institute of Ecumenical Education, Thinkers Corner, Enugu, on 9 November 2009, the convener of the meeting, the Rev. Professor Christian Anieke, Provost of the Institute, informed the participants that he had applied for a university that should belong to the Catholic Diocese of Enugu. He also assured the members that he would bring all the financial resources needed for a takeoff of the project. Those on the membership list included:

• Very Rev. Professor Christian Anieke
• Barr. (Mrs.) B. N. Ugwu
• Msgr. Professor Obiora Ike
• Barr. Anthony Mogboh (SAN)
• Professor Christian Nwachukwu Okeke
• Professor Julius Onah
• Arch. C. Orji
• Rev. Mother Ifechukwu Udorah, DDL
• Professor Edwin Onyeneje
• Egnr. R. Odumodu
• Professor Joseph Ikechukwu Chidobem
• Professor Festus C. Eze

As can be seen, the Planning and Implementation Committee included the clergy, reputable public officers and experienced university administrators, some of who had received training in the National Universities Commission and were well acquainted with the approved guidelines for the establishment of universities in Nigeria. The Committee met several times to brainstorm and agree on the critical issues of the vision, mission, philosophy and objectives of the proposed university and the preparation of the three strategic documents, namely: the Academic Brief, the University Law and the Master Plan. The Planning and Implementation Committee and its sub-committees tackled the assignment not only expeditiously but also with a high degree of commitment which was more or less inspired by the sincerity of purpose demonstrated by the Rev. Professor Christian Anieke, who provided all the logistics needed for the smooth execution of the sub-committee assignments. Indeed there is always an aura of success and victory surrounding a person of goodwill and so given his sincerity of purpose and support of the PIC, the Committee was ready in record time to invite SCOPU for the first verification visit of the proposed university. Meanwhile in one of the meetings, Rev. Anieke informed the members that Prof. Okojie had urged him and Prof. Onah to name the university after a bishop who had worked in the diocese. They settled for Bishop Okoye, who contributed a lot to the growth of the diocese, including acquiring the land being used as the permanent site of the university. The first name was written as Bishop Okoye Ecumenical University, which was later modified as Godfrey Okoye University (GO University). The First Verification Visit

That visit took place on June 10, 2008. The Standing Commission on Private Universities (SCOPU) of the National Universities Commission, under the able leadership of Professor O. Onwudike, arrived at the Institute of Ecumenical Education, Thinkers Corner, Enugu, to inspect the take-off site of the proposed university as well as its proposed permanent site at Ugwuomu-Nike, twenty kilometers from Enugu. Apart from the members of the Planning and Implementation Committee who were present, the Enugu Catholic Community, the Governing Council of the Institute of Ecumenical Education and members of the Diocesan Curia and priests of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu were all present to receive the august visitors. Present also were the representatives of tertiary institutions in the state and friends of the proposed university from Austria. If physical presence was an accurate reflection of stakeholder interest and people’s desire, the Enugu Christian Community had by the quantity and quality of presence on that occasion indicated a strong interest in the proposed university. It was clear from the massive turnout and support that the Enugu Christian Community was out in support of a new approach to university education, where discipline would not be an absurdity but a creed, an approach that would give the youth an opportunity of sound intellectual and spiritual growth, deep-rooted understanding of the unity of knowledge and commitment to the philosophy of dialogue. The outcome of the first visit was good. Indeed the chairman of SCOPU had this to say before their departure:

“There is not much to be done in the Academic Brief and the Law. You have to work on the Master Plan. Thank you for welcoming us, taking care of us and showing us around. You can count on us that we will be able to come within the shortest possible time for the second visit, once you have incorporated our agreements and taken care of the Master Plan.”

Second Verification Visit

The project was very fortunate indeed in having as kin-pins the Chairman of PIC, Professor Julius Onah and Rev. Professor Christian Anieke whose strong logistic support, display of pastoral care and profoundly illuminating capacity to manage uncertainty kept members of the sub-committees fully alert and well focused enough for things that needed to be done to qualify for the second verification visit. SCOPU arrived (on invitation), on 11 April 2009 for the second verification visit under a new leader, Professor J. D. Amin. The usual large turn-out was there to welcome the team. The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Most Rev. Dr. C. V. Onaga, was not only present but also accompanied the team to the proposed permanent site at Ugwuomu-Nike where a lot of work had been done to leave no one in doubt about the sincerity of purpose ad oneness of mind behind the project. The new Chairman of SCOPU and the desk-officers could not conceal their feelings. Indeed at the wrap up session, the Chairman said, “You have worked hard and well. It remains for us to go back and report to the National Universities Commission, whose decision regarding any further action would be communicated to you.” As the team departed, hopes rose very high in many quarters. Positive Action Inspired By The Board of Trustees The Proprietor appointed the following as members of the Board of Trustees for the proposed university:

Professor Joseph Ikechukwu Chidobem – Chairman
Rev. Professor Christian Anieke – Member Dr. Mrs. Veronica Egonekwu Mogboh – Member
Professor Julius Onuorah Onah – Member
Professor Edwin Onyeneje – Member
Very Rev. John Nwafor – Member
Monsignor Professor Obiora Ike – Member
Professor Christian Nwachukwu Okeke – Member

The Board inspired several on-the-ground activities designed to enhance the work of the PIC. The activities included the intensification of renovation work on the take-off site of the proposed university, commencement of serious work on the permanent site and undertaking of a study visit to certain private universities West of the Niger by the Chairman of the Board, Professor Joseph Ikechukwu Chidobem, the Provost of the Institute of Ecumenical Education, Rev. Professor Christian Anieke and Professor Festus C. Eze as member of the PIC. The first private university visited was Cetep City University, Lagos, which took place on Tuesday, October 21, 2009. The second university visited (on Wednesday, 22 October) was Babcock University, Illisham-Remo, Ogun State, a faith-based university founded in 1999. It was in the midst of a most illuminating and productive engagement with the President/Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor J. A. Kayode Makinde and his team which included the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Ademola Tayo and the Professor of Guidance and Counseling (who functioned as Chief of Staff) that the information that the National Executive Council sitting in Abuja had approved Godfrey Okoye University as one of the seven new private universities in Nigeria was delivered to the university. Approval of the University

On 27 October 2009, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission formally informed the proprietor (the Catholic Bishop of Enugu) that consequent on having satisfied the requirements, Godfrey Okoye University had been accorded provisional approval to take-off as a private University in Nigeria. The terms and conditions of the approval were carefully stated. The proprietor was also invited to the NUC office in Abuja for the formal presentation of the provisional licence on Tuesday, 3 November 2009. Take-Off Arrangements

A meeting of the Proprietor and the Board of Trustees was held to appoint the pioneer Vice Chancellor and Registrar. The university later appointed key academic and administrative staff. Christian C. Anieke – Vice Chancellor

Celebrating academic triumphs, alumni partnerships, and a surprise engagement all in one unforgettable midday gathering.

The midday prayer at Godfrey Okoye University transformed into a grand arena of celebration today as the university management, staff, and students gathered to honour the brilliant legal minds who clinched victory at the maiden edition of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Debate Competition, organized in partnership with the NYSC.

The champions from the Faculty of Law, Favour Egbogu and Kosisochukwu Ajoiyi, were treated to a hero’s welcome for bringing immense distinction to the institution. The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke personally presented each winner with a prize of 100 euros and a rechargeable fan. In the spirit of rewarding excellence, the Director of the Directorate of Competitions, Mrs. Uchanta Chukwu was gifted a premium juicer for her tireless dedication and strategic mentorship that paved the way for the team's historic triumph.

Fr. Prof. Anieke used the platform to remind the student body that the upcoming 2025/2026 Students’ Week is strictly scheduled to run from Wednesday, June 10 to June 12. Emphasizing that attendance is mandatory, the Vice-Chancellor warned that absenteeism would attract strict disciplinary actions, urging all students to participate actively.

Adding to the day's excitement, a distinguished alumna of the university and CEO of ReginaMax Immigration Services (a prominent Canadian Immigration Consultant), Ms. Nneka Anieze was present to shower the debate winners with an additional cash reward of N50,000 each. Ms. Anieze, who went down memory lane to share how the Vice-Chancellor’s personal benevolence sponsored her education from secondary school through her university graduation, announced a massive give-back initiative. She is partnering with her alma mater to offer comprehensive visa and immigration consultancy services to GOU staff and students at a heavily discounted 30% rate, aiming to bring transparency and credibility to international travel processing.

The celebratory atmosphere during the midday assembly reached an absolute climax with a surprise, heartwarming engagement proposal. The romantic gesture set the stage for a grand simulation of a traditional inter-tribal wedding between the Igbo and Yoruba cultures, scheduled to headline the highly anticipated Cultural Day during the upcoming Unity Week.

From raw ideas to polished papers: Highlights from the Department of History and International Studies' research seminar.

The Department of History and International Studies at Godfrey Okoye University has taken a proactive step toward fostering academic excellence by organizing a comprehensive seminar on Project Writing for its 300 and 400-level students. Held in May 2026, the event aimed to demystify the undergraduate research process and instil confidence in final-year students.

The workshop provided a detailed roadmap of the entire research journey. Academic resource persons guided the students through critical phases of project writing, including:

Strategic topic selection and proposal development

Conducting a thorough literature review

Ethical data collection and analysis

Mastering standard referencing techniques and avoiding plagiarism

Lecturers at the event emphasized that undergraduate research is not merely a graduation requirement but an exercise in critical thinking and intellectual curiosity. They urged students to prioritize originality, adhere strictly to academic standards, and maintain consistent, open communication with their assigned supervisors to navigate common research hurdles seamlessly.

The interactive nature of the seminar allowed students to openly share their anxieties regarding project writing and receive direct, practical solutions from experienced faculty members.

Participants described the session as timely and highly impactful, noting that the practical insights shared have effectively stripped away the anxiety often associated with final-year research projects.

Through initiatives like this, the Department of History and International Studies continues to reinforce its commitment to producing well-equipped, research-ready graduates.

Feeding the nation, empowering the youth: Highlights from the 7th graduation ceremony of Mary Agro Farm Institute

Agriculture has been reaffirmed as the ultimate lifeline of human existence and a critical driver for national growth. The Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Most Rev. Dr. Ernest Obodo made this submission during the 7th graduation ceremony of the Mary Agro Farm Institute, an affiliate of Godfrey Okoye University, held at the institute's premises in Udi, Enugu State.

Bishop Obodo noted that a nation like Nigeria blessed with an abundance of fertile land and a vibrant youth population has no business neglecting the agricultural sector. He emphasized that farming should be championed as a primary avenue for youth engagement and economic empowerment.

Through the Mary Agro Farm Institute, the Church is directly tackling unemployment by providing a comprehensive, six-month intensive agricultural training program. To ensure the 27 newly minted graduates transition seamlessly into the industry, Bishop Obodo revealed that each beneficiary receives a startup grant of five hundred thousand naira (N500,000) to launch their agribusiness ventures.

Echoing the call for excellence, the Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke reminded the graduates that skills mean very little without strong character and financial discipline. He urged them to manage their startup funds prudently to build sustainable enterprises.

In a practical demonstration of support, Fr. Prof. Anieke, on behalf of the university, handed out cash prizes to outstanding graduates. The award for Best in Character pulled N150,000, while the Best Graduating Student in Academics and the Most Dedicated Graduand each received N100,000. Adding to the excitement, the Vice-Chancellor promised immediate employment opportunities at Godfrey Okoye University for select exceptional graduates.

Speaking on behalf of his peers, one of the trainees, Prince Kennedy Chukwumaeze, described the six-month training as an invaluable experience that has completely rewired their approach to farming. He expressed deep gratitude for the empowerment and challenged other Nigerian youths to look toward agriculture as a proud and dependable pathway to self-reliance.

Congratulations to the Graduands.

Official award ceremony for the maiden NUC Debate Championship winners: Honouring the debaters who conquered 74 universities across Nigeria.

The atmosphere at the Peter Mbah Law Auditorium was electric yesterday as the management and staff of Godfrey Okoye University gathered to celebrate a historic double triumph.

During the university’s midday prayer, a special award ceremony was held to honour Egbogu Favour Ogechukwu and Ajoiyi Kosisochukwu for their extraordinary victory in the maiden National Universities Debating Championship. The event also served as a proud home-coming for Miss Regina Ugonwa Obynna, a distinguished alumna who recently achieved a First Class at the Nigerian Law School, further cementing the university's reputation for producing top-tier legal minds.

Representing the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Royal Rhetorics, Mr. Stanley Nwaemerie provided a staggering perspective on the scale of the victory. The championship, a joint initiative by the NUC, NYSC, and the Committee of Vice-Chancellors, saw seventy-four universities and 219 debate teams compete from across Nigeria with GOUNI emerging champions and finals best speaker. Mr. Nwaemerie lauded Favour and Kosisochukwu for their courage and eloquence, noting that their journey to the top involved defeating established champions like the University of Ilorin and Obafemi Awolowo University.

To kick off the rewards, he presented the duo with a cash prize of ₦250,000 on behalf of the organizers, describing the university as a visionary hub for nurturing future leaders.

The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke expressed immense pride in the students for bringing national honour to the institution. In a powerful move to recognize excellence, he presented an additional ₦500,000 to the debate champions, ₦200,000 to the Law School First Class graduate, and ₦100,000 to the Director of Competitions, Mrs. Uchanta Chukwu.

Prof. Anieke emphasized that the success of Miss Regina Obynna, who earned a 2:1 at GOUNI before bagging her First Class at Law School, is a testament to the high academic bar set at the university. He noted with pride that every Law School set from Godfrey Okoye University consistently produces First Class graduates, a trend the university is determined to maintain through strict discipline and academic rigour.

The ceremony concluded with heartfelt gratitude from the award recipients, who credited God,the Vice-Chancellor, and the unwavering mentorship of the Directorate of Competitions for their success.

With additional monetary gifts from Umuchinemere MFB and friends of the university, a celebratory cake-cutting, and goodwill messages from the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Frank Asogwa and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Sergius Udeh, the event was a vivid reminder of the culture of excellence at Godfrey Okoye University.

For every student and guest present, the message was clear: at this institution, excellence is not just encouraged. It is celebrated, rewarded, and woven into the very fabric of campus life.

Congratulations to Godfrey Okoye University!

Defeating the best to become the best: GOU is the Champion of the NUC Debating Championship (NUCDC) 2026.

Godfrey Okoye University has officially made history by emerging as the undisputed champions of the maiden (National Universities Commission) NUC Debating Championship (NUCDC) 2026.

After four gruelling weeks of intense, world-class intellectual sparring, our brilliant debaters, Egbogu Favour Ogechukwu and Ajoiyi Kosisochukwu, outperformed every other institution in the country to claim the ultimate crown.

To seal this absolute dominance, Egbogu Favour Ogechukwu was also named the Finals Best Speaker of the tournament.

Huge congratulations go out to our incredible champions and the entire Godfrey Okoye University community for this monumental achievement, which comes with a well-deserved total ₦500,000 cash prize for winners, official NUC-endorsed certificates, and fully sponsored slots to represent the nation at the West African Universities Debating Championship (WAUDC).

The road to the championship required defeating the absolute best minds in Nigerian higher education. Our debaters fought their way through a highly competitive field, leaving behind formidable institutions in the semifinals, including Obafemi Awolowo University (Ife), Usmanu Danfodiyo University (Sokoto), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Awka), and the Federal University of Technology (Akure).

In the grand finale, the "Final Fantastic Four" came down to an intense showdown between the University of Ilorin, Amadeus University, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and Godfrey Okoye University.

Standing alone at the top after such a rigorous process is a testament to the strategic guidance of our Directorate of Competitions, whose dedicated mentorship continues to refine our students' critical thinking and public eloquence.

This historic victory underscores what happens when academic discipline meets the right environment.

Beyond the trophy and the regional tickets, the real triumph lies in the proof that our students are consistently developed to command global stages and solve complex problems with superior intellect.

Seeing our youth articulate ideas so powerfully offers profound reassurance to any family looking closely at where the next generation of leaders is truly being formed. It is clear that the culture of excellence cultivated here doesn't just prepare students to pass examinations but actively shapes them into the most articulate and competent professionals on the continent.

Once again, congratulations to the Champions and Congratulations to Godfrey Okoye University.

Our profound appreciation goes to:

Anchored in God's presence: Highlights from the beautiful Ascension Day celebration at Thinkers Corner, Enugu.

Godfrey Okoye University has been described as more than just a centre for academic excellence but an institution that serves as a tangible pathway to heaven.

The Vice Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke shared this profound reflection during a Holy Mass commemorating the Ascension of the Lord, held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Convocation Arena. In his homily, the Vice Chancellor described the university as a reflection of the Kingdom of God on earth, emphasizing that both staff and students are nurtured here to live lives worthy of eternity.

Fr. Prof. Anieke explained that the university intentionally creates an environment where individuals can encounter God daily. Through active participation in spiritual activities, including daily masses, the institution balances intellectual growth with deep spiritual development. He encouraged the university community to maintain a strong faith, pray sincerely, and always remain conscious of God’s abiding presence.

In a moving segment of the homily, the Vice Chancellor paid a glowing tribute to the late Arc. Juliet Atuegbu, a university lecturer who recently passed away. Commending her unwavering dedication to her duties and her positive impact on the campus, Fr. Prof. Anieke described her as a shining example of service, expressing faith that she is already resting as a saint in heaven.

As the service drew to a close, the Vice Chancellor reminded both students and staff that everyone would ultimately give an account of their earthly journey before God. He urged the community to take full advantage of the university's spiritual programs, to live exemplary lives, and to trust that God’s favor will follow them long after they leave the halls of Godfrey Okoye University.
