Statistics, University of Ibadan

Statistics, University of Ibadan Statistics You are indeed highly welcome to the Department of Statistics, University of Ibadan. Our staff strength is also formidable.

The Department is located in the Faculty of Science and at present shares the same building complex with the Department of Mathematics. This Department is one of the foremost training centres for Statisticians in Nigeria and indeed Africa. Our student population cuts across all the six Geo-Political zones of the country. We engage in teaching, research and community services. Our teaching and rese

arch interests cover almost all aspects of statistics. In particular, we are reputed for excellence in Sample Survey, Econometrics, Time Series, Biometrics, and Design of Experiments. The founding fathers of the Department made it a deliberate policy to attain high moral and academic standard in line with the University of Ibadan tradition.

Question 1 (Rated - You need to be the first to get 5 rated questions right to get a price.)

The Press' supervisor of a newspaper is under pressure to find ways to print the newspaper near the time of distribution, thereby giving the editorial department staff room for last minute changes. You have the option of running the presses at a "normal" speed rate or 110% of normal (which is called "high"). Estimates indicate that the press have to operate at high speed 60% of the time. There are twice as likely chances that the roll of paper (newsprint coil) breaks if the machines run at high speed, which would imply a temporary suspension of the press.

a) If the coil of a randomly selected press has a chance to break of 0.112, what is the probability that the coil will not break if the machines run at normal speed?

b) If the probability that a coil is broken if the machines run at high speed is 0.20, what is the probability that a randomly chosen coil is broken if it works at normal speed?

I am inviting you to a workshop on Data analysis from 30 July to 4 August, 2012.

Duration:
The intensive training programme will run for one week. July 30 to August 4, 2012.

Training Workshop on

STATISTICAL DATA ANALYSIS
For Researchers

Venue
Professor Biyi Afonja Statistical Laboratory
Department of Statistics, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria

Date: July 30 – Aug. 4, 2012

Time: 9.00 a.m – 5.00 p.m daily
Introduction
An essential element of any research is statistical analysis and documentation of research findings. This is not limited to the science based discipline but peculiar to discipline in the Social Sciences, Technology, Education, Medicine and even the Arts.

The relative advantage of speed, accuracy and capacity to handle large volume of data in a few seconds have necessitated the use and application of specialized softwares for some common and complex data structures.

An intensive training workshop on the use and application of specialized statistical software in the analysis of data where participants will be exposed to practical application by experienced and competent professional statisticians and specialists.

Objective of the Training
To develop capacity on the use and applications of statistical software.
To expose participants to the theory, meaning and interpretation of some relevant statistical concepts.
To teach participants how to write programm to analyze complex models that cannot be handled by readymade packages.

Training Format
The training will utilize participatory approach for 6 days. It will include lectures, interactive teaching/learning methods. More hours will be devoted to practical session.

Statistical Packages to be offered
The Software to be used for the training are: E-Views; SPSS, STATA, R-Package, Statistical Plus, TSP and MATLAB
The training workshop is categorized into three according to the initial competence of the participants.

(A) Basic Analysis with SPSS and EXCEL
Course Fee N10,000.00
Basic Statistics
• Questionnaire design
• Data coding and entry
• Data editing
• Descriptive Statistics
• ANOVA
• Regression and Correlation
• Non-Parametric test
• Charts

(B) Intermediate Analysis: With STATISTICA, STATA and E-Views
Course Fee N15,000.00
• Data entry and programming
• Econometrics
• Time Series
• Experimental designs
• Operations Research

(C) Advance Analysis: With R Software and MATLAB
Course Fee N20,000.00
• Programming with R
• Programming with MATLAB
• Simulation and Annealing
• Bootstrap
• Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)
• Metropolis Hasting Algorithm
• Gibbs Sampling

Expected results
At the end of the training the students should be able to:
1. Analyze primary data from questionnaire.
2. Indentify each statistical software package with their various capabilities.
3. Know the appropriate package to apply to different data structure.
4. Write simple or complex program to analyze data where software packages are not readily available.

Target Participants
• Students (undergraduates and postgraduates) in the sciences and related fields.
• Lecturers and Researchers in various fields from the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education..
• Directors, managers and policy makers in federal and state ministries, as well as Department of Planning and Research in local governments.
• Interested members of the general public.

Venue:
Professor Biyi Afonja Statistical Laboratory in the Department of Statistics, University of Ibadan.

Training Modalities
The period of training shall be between the hours of 9.00 a.m and 5.00 p.m. Each participant will have a computer unit to him/herself for effective teaching and learning. The challenge of erratic power supply is adequately taken care of.
