The Medical school was founded in 1948 with 14 students, as the University College at Ibadan, an external college of the University of London. In 1962, two years after Nigeria’s independence, the University College became the University of Ibadan with independence from the University of London.The Medical School curriculum was then changed so that medical students would be trained better for the Nigerian environment in which they would practice. The Faculty of Medicine was restructured into a College of Medicine with effect from 1st of August 1980

The Ibadan College of Medicine is the oldest and most prestigious medical school in sub-Saharan Africa, and has been a center of excellence in learning for over five decades. It has a formidable track record for health manpower development, and has played a pivotal role in clinical research in Africa. Ibadan has trained more doctors than any other school in sub-Saharan Africa, and has eminent graduates in Medicine

UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN CLINICIAN-RESEARCHER BECOMES FIRST INDIGENOUS AFRICAN SENIOR FELLOW OF WORLDS LEADING MRI SOCIETY

Godwin Ogbole is a distinguished professor of Radiology and consultant neuroradiologist at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (COMUI) and University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan whose pioneering contributions have transformed African neuroimaging and stroke research. He played a key role in assembling Africa’s first ultra-low-field MRI prototype in Uganda in 2022 and has trained or contributed to the training of over 100 MRI scientists and clinicians across the continent.

UPGRADE OF COLLEGE INTERNET BANDWIDTH

The College Management, in its commitment to ensuring that staff and students have access to fast and stable internet services, approved the upgrade of the College’s bandwidth in December 2025. Since then, the contracted service provider, Galaxy Backbone, has been working diligently to activate the upgrade, which will also serve as a backup to the bandwidth currently provided by the University.

11TH PROVOST OF COMUI ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD FEDERATION FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION

Professor Ẹmiọla Oluwabunmi Ọlapade-Ọlaọpa, the 11th Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria is the President-elect of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). Professor Ọlapade-Ọlaọpa secured an overwhelming mandate to lead the world body for the next four years commencing in January 2027 at the Executive Committee Meeting of WFME which took place at the Marriot in Lagos on March 24 and 25, 2026.
