The National Independent Convention Planning Committee (I-CPC) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), hereinafter referred to as βthe I-CPC,β having successfully conducted the 2026 National Convention and electoral process on Sunday, 24th May, 2026, and thereafter duly constituted the Communique Drafting Committee by nomination at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja, hereby issues this communiquΓ© for the information of the general public, relevant stakeholders, educational institutions, government agencies, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria at large.
PREAMBLE
The Convention witnessed the convergence of Studentsβ Union Government (SUG) Presidents, serving as Senators of NANS, delegates, stakeholders, observers, and student leaders drawn from various tertiary institutions across the six geopolitical zones of the Federation. The Chairman of the Independent Convention Planning Committee (IN-CPC), Comr. Omotayo Oladele Samuel (KENKO), formally declared the convention open.
Following the declaration by the Chairman of the Independent Convention Planning Committee (IN-CPC) officially kicking off the convention proceedings, Comr. Omotayo Oladele Samuel (KENKO) delivered his opening address.
In his address, he appreciated the entirety of Nigerian students for their support and confidence in the committeeβs ability to deliver a credible convention. He also commended the outgoing President, Comr. Olushola Oladoja, for entrusting the committee with the responsibility of overseeing the transition process of the organization. Furthermore, he extended his appreciation to all members of the 2026 IN-CPC for their dedication and commitment towards the success of the convention.
Moving forward, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Comr. Asefon Sunday Dayo, addressed the congress.
His address centered on the strides of the Renewed Hope Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the education sector, including the introduction of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), aimed at ensuring that every Nigerian aspiring to pursue higher education has access to educational opportunities.
He also highlighted the Presidentβs commitment to improving the quality of education, which has, in turn, led to increased subvention to tertiary institutions. Furthermore, he emphasized the administrationβs efforts in maintaining industrial harmony with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), thereby preventing prolonged strike actions and ensuring that students do not exceed their stipulated years of study.
In the same vein, the outgoing President of NANS, Comr. Olushola Oladoja who was accompanied on stage by members of his executive cabinet and the Zonal Coordinators of NANS, delivered his valedictory speech, which was subsequently followed by the presentation of a documentary highlighting his activities and achievements while in office.
In his valedictory address, he gave an account of his stewardship to the organization, stressing that he had successfully returned NANS to the campuses by engaging students across various states and visiting virtually all campuses during the course of his administration.
He further highlighted his efforts towards repositioning the organization and giving it a new face through sustained advocacy for the betterment and welfare of Nigerian students.
Indeed, it was a remarkable and befitting way to bow out of office.
Accordingly, the convention proper commenced with nominations for the position of Convention Chairman, made by SUG Presidents who possess the exclusive power to do so. Comr. Umar Faruk Musa (Shakaka) was nominated to serve as Convention Chairman. Similarly, Comr. Shata Maikyau and Comr. Samuel Eno Okoi were also nominated. However, the duo stepped down in favour of Comr. Umar Faruk Musa (Shakaka), who was consequently declared the unopposed winner and duly returned as Convention Chairman.
Moving forward, Comr. Umar Faruk Musa (Shakaka), having been elected as the Convention Chairman, dissolved the standing committee of the Independent Convention Planning Committee (IN-CPC) and the Olushola Oladoja-led administration with immediate effect.
Furthermore, he appointed Comr. Jabi Isah Usman as the Convention Clerk and Comr. Samson Moses as the Convention Chief Whip.
