PAU Student Founder Develops Safety App to Help Families Stay Connected During Journeys

Njeze Okechukwu, a student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Pan-Atlantic University, combines his passion for software development with a desire to solve real-world challenges.

His innovation, Live Intervals, automatically shares location updates with authorised family members, providing greater peace of mind and helping users stay connected while travelling.

For Okechukwu, the journey has been about more than technology.

It's been about courage, impact, and learning one important lesson:

"If you don't put yourself out there, you will never be seen."

Every doctoral journey is built on years of inquiry, discipline, and a commitment to advancing knowledge.

We are delighted to celebrate Dr. Lawrence Àkàndé of the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University , who has successfully defended his PhD thesis at Lead City University, Ibadan.

His research, "Appraisal of Soundtrack Valorisation Patterns and Stakeholders’ Perspectives of Hubert Ogunde’s Yoruba Film Aiye," shines a light on the intersection of film, music, culture, and stakeholder perspectives within one of Nigeria's most influential cinematic works.

Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement. We look forward to the impact of this important contribution to scholarship.

Some of the most powerful stories of service are not loud. They are lived day after day, year after year. Last Saturday, we launched one of those stories: Prof. Chantal Epie’s I Am a Lagosian! What brought me to Nigeria and what made me stay!, published by Pan-Atlantic University Press.

Members of the university community, friends and colleagues came together to celebrate a life that has quietly shaped so many. For almost 53 years, Prof. Epie has called Lagos home. She arrived as part of the first group of women sent by St. Josemaría Escrivá, Founder of Opus Dei, to begin the apostolate in Nigeria, and she stayed.

As a long-serving professor and former Dean of Pan-Atlantic University's School of Management and Social Sciences, she has lived the spirit of service that defines our university. Her selflessness, her deep investment in people, and her steady commitment to forming others have never been about recognition. They have simply been her way of life.

Her memoir captures that quiet faithfulness with clarity and warmth. It is a story of choosing to stay, of giving generously, and of making Nigeria truly her own.

Congratulations, Prof. Chantal Epie. Thank you for the example you continue to give us all.

The lecture may be over, but the conversation is far from finished.

During Professor Ekundayo Peter Mesagan's 26th Inaugural Lecture, Making Lemonade from Lemons: The Fossil Energy & Sustainability Puzzle, he challenged the audience to think differently about energy, development, and sustainability. Here are 10 ideas that stood out:

1. The energy transition is not as simple as "replace oil with renewables." Heavy industries still face technological and cost constraints, meaning fossil fuels will remain part of the global energy mix for some time.

2. Climate ambition must be balanced with economic reality. Countries need pathways that support both development and sustainability, not one at the expense of the other.

3. Africa's energy story will be different from Europe's. Expanding energy access and supporting growth remain urgent priorities alongside environmental goals.

4. Fossil fuels are not the whole problem. The bigger issues are often weak governance, poor policy choices, limited innovation, and underinvestment.

5. Natural resources do not determine a nation's destiny. What countries do with those resources matters more than the resources themselves.

6. The future belongs to countries that can transform challenges into opportunities. This was the essence of the "lemons to lemonade" metaphor that anchored the lecture.

7. Technology will be central to sustainability. From cleaner industrial processes to carbon capture and storage, innovation must be part of the transition.

8. Finance is a sustainability tool. Financial systems do more than drive economic growth; they can accelerate environmental progress when aligned with the right priorities.

9. Energy transition cannot be separated from poverty reduction and energy access. Progress in one area depends on progress in the others.

10. The answers will not come from one discipline alone.

The lecture ended with a call for collaboration among economists, engineers, policymakers, environmental scientists, and other experts to build sustainable futures.

The hall, before the lecture began.

A full audience and a shared curiosity about one of the defining questions of our time: how do we meet growing energy needs while building a more sustainable future?

That was the conversation at the heart of Professor Ekundayo Peter Mesagan's inaugural lecture.
