PLEASE, THIS POST IS NOT TO DISCOURAGE ANYONE OR PO!!SOΓ‘ YOUR MIND.

Dear intending students and Jambites, two pieces of advice I would give you is,

Firstly, please study a course that can make you self-employed.

Courses like:

πŸ“Œ Agriculture-Related Courses
πŸ“Œ Medical and health- related courses
πŸ“Œ Pharmacy and Nursing
πŸ“Œ Musical Courses
πŸ“Œ Engineering Courses
πŸ“Œ Architectural and Construction Related Courses
πŸ“Œ Graphics and Web Design. Anything that will expose you to Tech
πŸ“Œ Theatre Art
πŸ“Œ Education Courses
πŸ“Œ Computer Science/Information Technology
πŸ“Œ Bus!ness Courses
πŸ“Œ Management Courses
πŸ“Œ Hospitality Courses

Etc

The truth is that, some of the courses we study in Nigeria have no positive impact, or let me rephrase:

Doesn't thrive much here, and that's why we do see graduates roaming the street with their certificates, or seeing someone working where he or she isn't qualified to work.

I'm not trying to undervalue any course or try to discourage you from going for your own choice, but one question you must ask yourself is: "If I graduate from studying this course, can I stand on my own if things fall apart?"

Reality is different from ideality and your passion, if not careful, may make you br0ke.

Let's forget this quote about, "Working anywhere with a particular course" as that's a fallacy to console you.

If you are a student of any management course and you can't stand on your own tomorrow if you aren't employed, then you have yourself to blame.

Take it or leave it, Nigeria today isn't favorable for all, so help yourself before seeking for external help.

Don't allow the pressure of staying at home or being desperate for admission to make you go for a course that wouldn't be beneficial to you.

Four years is too much to waste on studying irrelevant courses.

PS; I'm a political science graduate, yet to serve and trust me, I studied the course because I was desperate to leave the house and today I'm earning from something else and I have no int

The Girl, Blessing Iripia Alims, New UNICAL SUG President

The new President of the Students Union Government SUG of the University of Calabar UNICAL, Blessing Alims, who has now made the record as the first ever female SUG President of the school, 49 years after it was founded, is from Gakem, in Bekwarra LGA, Cross River State. She's studying Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution with a CGPA of 4.75 at the moment.

She's a serial volunteer with the following NGOs: Girl's Power Initiative, The Bridge Leadership Foundation founded by Liyel Imoke, former governor of Cross River State, AIDS Healthcare Foundation and Youth Advocates, UNFPA Nigeria.

In 2022, Blessing Alims, was one of the winners amongst over 150 contestants drawn from across Africa to participate in the Youngers Foundation Female and More Social Impact Project. She was the only winner from Cross River State, a win that saw her going on a 10 days learning visit to Kigali, Rwanda.

Blessing has been involved in lots of charity initiatives and outreaches that have impacted positively on thousands of persons. She is one of the founding members of the Youth Friendly Hub in the University of Calabar, a hub that is impacting the lives of students positively with relevant skills for sustainability.

Just recently, she was selected to attend the Young Women Leadership Training Program (South South Region) organized by IFES - International Foundation for Electoral Systems.

In the campus debate organized by the National Union of Campus Journalists NUCJ, for contestants for the SUG President, Blessing Alims emerged number one with 87 points to defeat four other male aspirants.

She is an intelligent and development driven young lady who won her position based on her capacity and should be supported to rewrite the ailing story of unionism in UNICAL.

First ever female SUG President under the first ever female Vice Chancellor of the school.

Yours sincerely,
Citizen Agba Jalingo.
