JAMB DOES NOT HAVE 'CUT-OFF' MARKS, WE HAVE A MINIMUM ENTRY SCORE:

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board wishes to clarify that the Board does not use the term "cut-off marks" in its admission process.

What JAMB has is a Minimum Entry Score, which is graded by categories. This is because the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is a unified examination conducted for candidates seeking admission into different categories of tertiary institutions — Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education, and Innovation Enterprise Institutions.

Therefore, a candidate's score range determines the category of institutions they are eligible to apply to, rather than a single general cut-off mark for all.

JAMB OUTLINE:

1. JAMB does not have ‘Cut-off’ marks. We have a Minimum Entry Score which is graded by categories because it’s a unified examination. Meaning your score range determines your category of eligibility.

2. The minimum entry score is determined jointly by JAMB and Institutions at the yearly Policy meeting presided over by HM Education and is a function of the performance of candidates that year - if all candidates score above 200 in a year surely the score will be higher. Also bear in mind that our desire is to admit as many people as possible a year into tertiary institutions.

3. The scores themselves are not necessarily a reflection of JAMB’s success or failure. The intervention you seek in the performance of candidates should occur before they get to the stage where they write UTME.

4. On our part we are looking at the psychometric evaluation of our test items and investigating the inclusion of life skills and critical thinking into UTME.
