Greatest Akokites,

Let's rise to felicitate our Father, mentor, leader and teacher, Emeritus Professor Mojeed Olayide Akanbi Abass, OON, FAS, past National President, University of Lagos Alumni Association (2008-2013) on his birthday today.

Prof. Abass is a renowned Professor of Computer Science and has raised many tech giants who have become ICT disruptors in the world today. He was also a former Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos.

During the MAULAG crisis of 2012, the Emeritus Professor was instrumental in rallying and mobilising eminent Akokites in the bar and the legislature who filed the suit to stop the renaming of our prestigious Alma-mater and reaching out to elder statesmen to stem the ugly tide.

For those who also don't know, the current Unilag Alumni Secretariat (Alumni Jubilee House aka GTB building) was facilitated by Prof. Abass while he held sway as National President. He has continued to contribute immensely to the growth of the Association by proferring solutions to issues and critical matters.

Prof. Abass also served as Deputy Vice Chancellor of our great alma mater under Professor Nurudeen Alao, after which he acted as Vice Chancellor before the appointment of Prof. Jelili Omotola, SAN.

Happy Birthday Emeritus Prof. May the Almighty continue to strengthen you.

Congratulations, Sir 🎉🍰🎉

UNILAG Alumni Inaugurates MIT Alumni

Earlier today, the President Worldwide, University of Lagos Alumni Association, Engr. Ifeoluwa Oyedele, FAEng inaugurated the Masters of Information Technology (MIT) Alumni Association at an event held at the Boardroom of University of Lagos Alumni Building.

The President, ably represented by the 2nd National Vice President, Otunba Lekan Ajisafe, received the pro-tem executives of the branch alongside the National Internal Auditor of the Association, Mr. Olatunde Ayadi, FCA, and Acting Executive Secretary, Mr. Seun Badejo. Also in attendance were Ms. Emem Ukpong, Administrative Officer, and Mr. Jeremiah Olatinwo, Digital Media Officer.

In his welcome address, Mr. Lekan Ajisafe noted that the inauguration is a proof of the growth and inclusion agenda of the Engr. Ifeoluwa Oyedele-led administration. He reminded the newly inaugurated body that the alumni association is a place for giving back to the association and not a place for self-seeking ambitions.

Chairman of the branch, Dr. Nathaniel Ataansuyi noted that although his set was the pioneer set of the department in 2002, Alumni was set up due to yearning and rising need to connect, empower, innovate and contribute to the needs of the Faculty of Computing & Informatics.

Commending the faculty, he noted that it has produced a host of individuals who have become great in their various endeavours including four professors and several Ph.D holders. Dr. Ataansuyi called for more adoption of information technology especially in the age of artificial intelligence.

Renowned professor of Computer Science and scholar, Prof. Florence Oladeji, speaking on behalf of the faculty, hailed the pioneer set for the initiative to join the graduates of the MIT programme to the larger alumni body. She also reeled out the various give back activities of the various alumni sets and departmental alumni in the faculty. She also revealed that the faculty which was etched out of the old Faculty of Science got its operational license as a faculty from the NUC exactly a year ago and assured the Alumni body of its full support anytime.

Copies of the Alumni constitution were handed over to the Chairman of the MIT Alumni by Mr. Lekan Ajisafe and the Oath of office was administered by the National Internal Auditor of the Association, Mr. Olatunde Ayadi, FCA.

On behalf of the National Executives Council (NEC), we offer our warmest congratutions to the newly minted MIT Alumni and her executives.

Greatest Akokites,

Today, 12th of August is a special day for a distinguished Akokite, a primus inter pares and one of UNILAG's esteemed icons.

The University of Lagos Alumni Association heartily joins family, friends, colleagues and well-wishers across the world to celebrate an exceptional leader, distinguished professional, philanthropist and trailblazer, Mr. Kola Adesina, MFR, FNSE, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, as he marks another glorious year.

From humble beginnings, Mr. Adesina has risen through determination, intellect and an unwavering commitment to excellence to become one of Nigeria’s outstanding business and energy-sector leaders.

An illustrious Akokite, he holds a B.Sc. in Insurance, M.Sc. in Management, and a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy, all from the University of Lagos.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions and accomplishments, our Alma Mater further endowed him with an Honorary Doctorate Degree at its last convocation.

But beyond the degrees, titles and boardrooms lies a heart committed to giving, building and lifting others.

Mr. Adesina’s footprints are indelibly etched across the University of Lagos. His generosity, philanthropy and humanitarian interventions have touched the institution and its community in profound ways. Remarkably, many of these acts of kindness are undertaken quietly, without fanfare or the need for public recognition.

In the corporate world, as Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, a leading infrastructure company and the parent company of Ikeja Electric Plc, Nigeria’s largest electricity distribution company, he continues to demonstrate visionary leadership and an unwavering passion for excellence.

On behalf of the President Worldwide, the National Executive Council (NEC), and the teeming members of the University of Lagos Alumni Association, we celebrate you today and salute the remarkable journey you have undertaken.

May this new chapter bring you greater wisdom, renewed strength, sound health, deeper fulfilment and even greater opportunities to make a difference.

Happy Birthday and congratulations,, Mr. Kola Adesina, MFR, FNSE!

Greatest Akokites,

Today, one of our own, Mr. Oluwarotimi Edu, insurance guru and legal practitioner and Vice Chairman, Quicklinks Insurance Brokers Ltd, was committed to mother earth after his passing 3 months ago on May 15, 2026.

His love for insurance and proffering of solutions to knotty claim issues poised him to study Law at our Alma mater where he bagged a LL.B and LL.M in 2000 and 2017 respectively.

We mourn with his family at this trying time and send our love and prayers to them. Goodnight dear Mr. Rotimi Edu.
