Some campaigns make people watch.

Others make people feel.

The strongest brand moves happen when a company understands the role it plays in people’s everyday lives.

This week, we’re breaking down what made one of MTN’s strategic decisions resonate beyond advertising.

Because behind every successful campaign is a strategy worth studying.

What lesson stood out most to you?

The best ideas rarely begin with a presentation. They begin with a conversation.

Before the facilitator takes the stage, our students are already exchanging perspectives, challenging assumptions, and learning from one another.

Because strategy isn’t just taught; it’s debated, refined, and strengthened through meaningful dialogue.

At Pop Culture Varsity, every conversation has the potential to change how you think about brands, culture, and business.

Nike has never really been in the business of selling shoes.

They sell belief.

Every campaign, athlete partnership, and story points back to one simple idea: helping people believe they’re capable of more.

That’s why people remember the feeling long after they’ve forgotten the product.

Great brands don’t just market products.
They build identities.

What’s another brand you think has mastered this?

Every December, millions of people post their Spotify Wrapped without being asked.

On the surface, it looks like a music recap.

But look a little closer, and you’ll see something bigger.

Spotify didn’t create another feature. They created a cultural ritual; one that lets people express who they are through what they listen to.

The best strategies don’t interrupt culture.
They become part of it.

What brand campaign do you think has quietly become a cultural moment?

Why does AI still misunderstand things that seem obvious to people?

Because culture can’t simply be downloaded.

AI is incredibly powerful, but understanding culture goes beyond words. It involves shared experiences, local context, traditions, humor, emotions, and unspoken social cues that people learn by living them—not just reading about them.

That’s why AI can sometimes misunderstand jokes, slang, sarcasm, or everyday expressions that humans instantly recognize.

As AI continues to evolve, one thing remains clear: technology is at its best when it’s designed with human context in mind.

How do you think AI can become better at understanding culture?

We’re spending July inside the human mind.

Why people buy what they buy.
Why we say yes when we mean no.
Why habits stick and why they don’t.

This month, we’re reading through the layers of consumer psychology and behaviour not from a textbook angle, but from real-life patterns that shape decisions every single day.

📚 Predictably Irrational — Dan Ariely
📚 Thinking, Fast and Slow — Daniel Kahneman
📚 Nudge — Thaler & Sunstein
📚 Hooked — Nir Eyal

Each book pulls back the curtain on something simple but powerful:
we’re not as rational as we think we are.

And if you understand that, you start to understand everything — from marketing, to product design, to everyday choices people make without even realizing it.

July is for paying attention to behaviour.
Not guessing it. Understanding it.

Let’s get into it.
