School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University SMC prepares students for careers in creative industries, businesses, and public and private domains

The School of Media and Communication has evolved directly from the Centre for Media and Communication. The CMC was instituted in 2006 by the Pan-African University Council(now known as the Pan-Atlantic University Counicil) in recognition of the critical role of this sector in shaping societal values and cultural life. No less important, the contribution of the creative industries to economic gro

wth and the GDP is gaining recognition as well. Specifically, the establishment of the School of Media and Communication is informed by the aspiration to train professionals in this area of culture who would uphold the highest intellectual, ethical and professional values that promote creativity, critical knowledge, technical perfection, social responsibility, and the spirit of enterprise. The School’s programmes will prepare students for careers in the creative industries, in business generally, and in various public and private domains.

SMC Welcomes Second Cohort of Mastercard Foundation Scholars

On 3 August 2026, the School of Media and Communication (SMC), Pan-Atlantic University, welcomed the second cohort of scholars admitted under the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program for the 2026/2027 academic session.

A total of 70 students were admitted to Pan-Atlantic University under the scholarship programme, 35 of whom were admitted to pursue undergraduate degree programmes in the School of Media and Communication. The programmes include Mass Communication, Information Science and Media Studies, Film and Multimedia Studies, and Strategic Communication.

Speaking at the welcome engagement with the scholars, the Dean of the School of Media and Communication, Dr Ikechukwu Obiaya, expressed the School’s delight at their choice of study and wished them every success on their academic journey at Pan-Atlantic University.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program provides opportunities for talented young people to pursue quality higher education and develop the skills and knowledge needed to contribute meaningfully to their communities and society.

The admission of the second cohort builds on the success of the programme’s inaugural cohort, which was admitted during the 2025/2026 academic session. During that session, SMC welcomed 26 scholars out of the 60 students admitted to Pan-Atlantic University under the scholarship programme.

From 3–7 August 2026, the School of Media and Communication (SMC), Pan-Atlantic University, held a capacity-building workshop for 40 members of the Association of 1000 Hail Mary at the Pan-Atlantic University Main Campus in Ibeju-Lekki.

The theme of the five-day workshop was *“Strengthening Leadership, Unity, Communication and Sustainability for Effective Apostolic Service.”*

According to Mrs Chinyere Rosemary Obiako, the Archdiocesan Coordinator of the 1000 Hail Mary in the Lagos Archdiocese, the training was initiated by the promoter of the Association, Mrs Chinenye Obidegwu. She recognised the need for the Association’s leaders to be trained to effectively coordinate its members across the Archdiocese, particularly in relating with people and managing the Association in a way that would make a meaningful difference in their service.

She further stated, “No other society in the Archdiocese has ever undertaken this kind of training, and we felt that it was necessary and very important for our own Association to take that bold step so that we can spread our message to other members of the Catholic Church beyond the Lagos Archdiocese…”

In a testimonial at the end of the programme, one of the participants, Mary Jane Ezinne Okafor, said, “We came here to build our capacity on how to be good and impactful leaders. I am sure we all had expectations about what leadership is. However, during the course of this training with the School of Media and Communication, every single lesson was crafted with the intention of enhancing the capacity of members of the Association for greater leadership responsibilities and higher performance levels.

“We really enjoyed all the sessions, especially public speaking, the Apostolate’s responsibilities in the Church and society, image building and image management, to name a few.

“With this training, I am confident that I will be able to take on a whole lot more, as I am leaving here as a truly inspired and motivated leader with the ability to see things from other people’s perspectives, act with integrity, and communicate much better than I used to.”
