UNIMAID VC BAGS PRESTIGIOUS LAN FELLOWSHIP AS SCHOLARS CHART DIGITAL FUTURE FOR NIGERIAN LANGUAGES

The University of Maiduguri Vice-Chancellor, Professor Muhammed Laminu Mele, has bagged the prestigious Linguistic Association of Nigeria (LAN) fellowship as Nigeria's top academics, policymakers, and linguistic experts gathered at the headquarters of the National Open University of Nigeria in Abuja. The 37th Annual Conference of the association, themed "Language Policy, Power and Practice in Multilingual Nigeria," was held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. Organized in collaboration with the National Institute for Nigerian Languages, the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, and the British Council.

Delivering his acceptance speech on behalf of the inductees, Professor Mele captivated the audience with a profound sense of humility and visionary leadership. NEDC LIGHTS UP UNIMAID BASKETBALL COURT WITH SOLAR STREET LIGHTS

Evening basketball training at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has received a massive infrastructural boost following the donation and installation of 11 high-capacity solar street lights at the campus basketball court by the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

The facilities were formally handed over on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, by the Secretary of the NEDC, Bejemin Wesley. An alumnus of the institution, Wesley facilitated the solar lighting project as a personal contribution to upgrade his alma mater's sporting facilities and support the athletic development of its students.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, the Director of Legal Affairs, Asmau Abba Jatau, Esq., commended the NEDC Secretary for the timely and highly impactful intervention. COREN Commences Outcome-Based Accreditation of UNIMAID Engineering Programmes

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has commenced an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) accreditation visitation to the engineering programmes at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in order to align Nigerian engineering education with global best practices.

Receiving the COREN delegation at the Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Muhammed Laminu Mele, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Services), Professor Mohammed Ahmed Waziri, assured the accreditation team of the university’s unalloyed support. Professor Waziri reiterated Management's commitment to ensuring a transparent, seamless, and successful assessment of its engineering faculties.

Held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at the university's Centre for Instructional Technology (CIT), the high-profile engagement focused on strengthening farmers’ local innovations for a seamless transition to Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) in Nigeria.

SENATE COMMITTEE, NELFUND TAKE STUDENT LOAN CAMPAIGN TO NORTHEAST AS UNIMAID EMERGES TOP BENEFICIARY

The Federal Government’s push to eliminate financial barriers to higher education gained major momentum on Monday, 31st August 2026, as the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND led a high-powered delegation to Maiduguri for a regional sensitization on the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

Hosted at the University of Maiduguri’s Muhammadu Indimi Conference Center, the event brought together vice-chancellors, rectors, provosts, traditional rulers, and student leaders from across the Northeast.

The gathering was part of an ongoing nationwide campaign aimed at deepening awareness, addressing misconceptions, and guiding eligible students on how to seamlessly access the much-talked-about student loan scheme.

For the Northeast, a region where economic realities have historically threatened the educational aspirations of many young people, the intervention comes at a critical time. The program was geared towards a direct platform for students and school administrators to get firsthand information on eligibility criteria and application procedures.

Declaring the session open, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Dandutse Muntari Mohammed, noted that the outreach was a core part of the lawmakers' oversight responsibilities.

Serving as the Chairman of the venture, the Vice-Chancellor’s apex leadership has catalyzed a sweeping transformation, most notably within the University Printing Press. Once plagued by obsolete equipment, unconducive working conditions, and financial losses, the Unimaid Press has now been aggressively repositioned into a highly profitable, modern-facility-driven press, poised to dominate the printing market in the North-Eastern region of Nigeria.

Shedding light on this phenomenal turnaround, the Acting Managing Director of Unimaid Ventures Limited, Professor Opeyemi K. Akinniyi, a distinguished Professor of Accounting and Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), detailed the extent of the Vice-Chancellor’s strategic interventions during a recent media parley.

Recalling the state of the facility prior to the current administration's intervention, Professor Akinniyi noted that the Printing Press was a shadow of its potential. When she assumed office as the Acting Managing Director, the facility was not in good shape, with virtually all the air conditioners broken and the environment largely unconducive for members of staff. Furthermore, most of the machines were classified as dead or beyond repair. However, following a strategic interaction with Professor Mele, the narrative changed entirely. Driven by an inspiring vision to make the facility the best in the region, the Vice-Chancellor immediately committed significant resources to an aggressive infrastructural and technological overhaul.

Today, the working environment has been completely transformed. Close to fifteen air-conditioning units have become functional, alongside optimal lighting systems to ensure maximum productivity. Beyond aesthetics and comfort, the Vice-Chancellor authorized a massive technological upgrade that has brought the facility firmly into the digital age. The Computer-to-Plate (CTP) machine, which had been dumped and abandoned, was fully repaired, meaning the University no longer needs to outsource plate preparation to external vendors.

With the old Direct Imaging (DI) machine declared absolute scrap, the Vice-Chancellor also approved the procurement of a brand-new DI machine capable of handling high-definition, glossy printing. To complement this, the Press is taking delivery of an electronic, modern-day stitching machine, finally replacing a relic that had been in use since 1985. Deliveries of a new hot glue machine and advanced book-binding equipment are equally underway. Among new machines expected to be delivered In addition to these upgrades, is a new electronic foil blocking machine has been procured to seamlessly and digitally brand student project covers, and customized crafts directly from a personal computer, effectively abandoning the tedious, old-fashioned manual character arrangement.

Perhaps the most significant administrative victory for the Vice-Chancellor in this sector is the total domestication of the University's examination materials. Aided by a newly acquired numbering machine, the UNIMAID Printing Press is now producing all the examination booklets of the University internally. Professor Akinniyi stated meekly that no percentage of the examination booklets are being produced outside anymore. By halting the outsourcing of these vital materials, the Mele-led administration has aggressively blocked financial leakages, saving University of Maiduguri millions while massively boosting its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

Despite the aggressive drive for internal revenue, Professor Mele has ensured that the facility retains a human face, particularly concerning student welfare. As part of the upgrades, new high-capacity photocopy machines were procured strictly to serve the student population at highly subsidized rates. While external business centers charge exorbitant fees, the University Printing Press charges students a mere token of twenty Naira per page, whether running on public power or generators. The objective here is not to make sheer profit, but to break even and recover costs while making life significantly easier for the students.

Looking ahead, the Acting Managing Director expressed gratitude for the support provided by the Chairman and expresses with absolute confidence that with the arrival of the new DI, Speed Master and binding machines, the UNIMAID Printing Press will soon dominate the commercial printing landscape of the North-East. By eliminating the need for clients to travel to other states for high-quality printing, the University is strategically positioning itself to capture lucrative regional printing contracts.

Furthermore, the Directorate of Media and Information can now look forward to a seamless partnership with Unimaid Printing Press. Assuring the Public Relations unit of their capacity, Professor Akinniyi confirmed that the Press is fully equipped to produce the University’s official bulletins and magazines with the highest possible glossy output, meeting global corporate standards. The older generation of technical staff has shown renewed commitment, pledging to not only meet but surpass the Chairman's expectations.

UN-PAF APPOINTS UNIMAID REGISTRAR AS BORNO DIRECTOR TO DRIVE PEACEBUILDING INITIATIVES

The United Nations Peace Ambassadors Foundation (UN-PAF) has officially appointed the Registrar of the University of Maiduguri, Ahmad Alhaji Lawan, as its new Director for Borno State.

According to a statement obtained from the Office of the Africa High Commissioner, the prestigious appointment places the highly experienced administrator at the forefront of the Foundation’s strategic operations. The statement noted that the decision "recognises his extensive academic, professional, and administrative experience," positioning him to champion peace, development, and community empowerment across the state.

Stepping into this critical role, Lawan is entrusted with providing strategic leadership, administrative coordination, and robust programme development. Outlining his core mandate, the Foundation stated, "His responsibilities will include supporting initiatives focused on peacebuilding and conflict prevention, dialogue and reconciliation, humanitarian and community development, youth and women empowerment, and human rights."
