Chemical Constituents and Bio-evaluation of Elaeocarpus floribundus from North East India
Abstract
Elaeocarpus floribundus, a plant from the Elaeocarpaceae family, has been traditionally used in North East India for the treatment of various diseases, and its fruits are commonly used for the management of diarrheal and dysentery. Due to the increasing resistance of human pathogens to available therapeutics, the need for cost-effective antimicrobials of natural origin with minimal side effects is becoming more evident, and thus, the search for new sources of medicine from plants continues. While previous phytochemical studies of the plant have focused on the leaves, studies of the fruits, seeds, and stem-bark are limited. In this study, we aimed to isolate and characterize the biologically active compounds from all parts of the E. floribundus plant. Using various chromatography techniques, we isolated twenty bioactive compounds, including α-tocopherolquinone, β-sitosterol, linolenic acid, α-tocopherol, and myricitrin from the leaves; dibutyl malate, dibutyl succinate, β-sitosterol, succinic acid monobutyl ester, and 1-butyl-4-methyl malate from the fruits; vanillin, trans-coniferyl aldehyde, vanillic acid, gallic acid, and apigenin 7-O-(3ʹʹ-O-p-E-coumaroyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside from the seeds; and pentadecanoic acid, beta-sitosterol, 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, gallic acid, and epigallocatechin gallate from the stem-bark. The structures of these isolated compounds were elucidated using HR-ESIMS, 1D and 2D-NMR experiments.
Our findings reveal that the isolated compounds exhibit varying degrees of antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, providing a rationale for the traditional medicinal uses of E. floribundus. This study presents new information on the bioactive compounds present in E. floribundus, which could have potential applications in the development of new drugs or natural products for the management of various diseases.
