It must be stated unequivocally that this achievement is not the feat of any single individual or office alone; rather, it is the product of collective effort, sacrifice, resilience, patience, hard work, teamwork, faith, and unwavering determination towards establishing the University as a centre of excellence in medical and health sciences education.

Indeed, the journey was challenging. However, the University community — comprising staff, government agencies, host communities, stakeholders, security agencies, students, and many other silent but supportive partners — demonstrated that through unity, perseverance, and shared commitment, every obstacle can be overcome.

In particular, we sincerely appreciate and acknowledge:

The unwavering support of the Federal Government of Nigeria towards tertiary education and the development of medical education in the country;

The guidance, professional oversight, and support extended by Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN);

Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo, our sister institution, for its invaluable clinical support services, professionalism, and collaborative partnership towards advancing medical education and healthcare delivery;

The Chief Medical Director and the entire Teaching Hospital team for their immense contributions towards meeting the clinical training requirements for the MBBS programme;

Previous administrations of both institutions for laying the foundation upon which this success was built;

The Governing Council and Management Team for their strategic leadership, dedication, and commitment;

All members of staff for their sacrifices, professionalism, and tireless service in their various capacities;

Our dear students for their patience, perseverance, and steadfast belief in the institution;

Parents, guardians, alumni, and friends of the University for their prayers, encouragement, and continued support;

Our host communities, traditional institutions, and security agencies for their cooperation, peace, and goodwill throughout the process.

This landmark achievement further strengthens our resolve to sustain investments in quality teaching, learning, research, infrastructure, discipline, clinical training, and global best practices in medical education.

As we celebrate this success, we must also recognise that greater responsibilities now lie ahead. This accomplishment should inspire all of us to remain united, focused, disciplined, and committed to sustaining and surpassing the standards that earned us this accreditation.

On behalf of FUHSO, I sincerely thank everyone who rejoiced with us, supported us, stood by this institution in difficult moments, defended our collective vision, and continually prayed for our success.

FUHSO Secures Pre-Clinical Accreditation as FUHSTHO Gets Approval for Housemanship Programme

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has granted pre-clinical accreditation to Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO) following a rigorous accreditation exercise conducted on May 22, 2026.

The accreditation exercise was carried out by a 13-member MDCN team led by Dr. Nnameka Nwakama, who undertook what observers described as a painstaking and thorough assessment of the institution’s facilities, manpower, academic structure, and compliance with professional standards.

The development marks a major milestone in the history of FUHSO, especially as the feat was achieved within one year under the administration of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Aba Uba. Stakeholders within and outside the university community have described the achievement as a testament to the transformative leadership and commitment of the current management toward repositioning the institution for excellence in medical education.

In another significant breakthrough, the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo (FUHSTHO) was equally granted accreditation for the commencement of its Housemanship Programme, a development expected to strengthen medical training and healthcare delivery within the institution and beyond.

Speaking shortly after the accreditation announcement, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Aba Uba, alongside the Chief Medical Director of FUHSTHO, Prof. Eyaofu Agida, expressed profound appreciation to the MDCN team for the confidence reposed in both institutions.

The duo pledged to address and improve upon the few observable lapses identified during the exercise, assuring the Council that the institutions would continue to uphold the highest standards in medical education and healthcare service delivery.

Also reacting to the development, former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of FUHSO, Professor Abdullahi A. Abba, expressed confidence in the capacity of the Vice-Chancellor to further transform the fortunes of the university.

According to him, the remarkable progress recorded within a short period of one year demonstrates the determination and visionary leadership of Professor Uba in steering the institution toward national relevance and academic excellence.

While appreciating the Vice-Chancellor for the warm hospitality extended to the accreditation team, Professor Abba charged the leadership of both FUHSO and FUHSTHO not to betray the confidence reposed in them by the MDCN. He urged the management of the two institutions to sustain the momentum and continue improving on the standards required for medical training and healthcare practice in Nigeria.

The accreditation is widely seen as a historic achievement for the university and the entire Idoma nation, as it opens a new chapter in the advancement of medical education and professional healthcare training in the region.
