ACU, AVCTA Sign MoU on Postgraduate Religious Studies

Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, and the Archbishop Vining College of Theology (AVCTA), Akure, Ondo State, have entered into a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to run postgraduate programmes in Christian Religious Studies, marking a significant collaboration between two prominent institutions of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).

The agreement was signed and officially presented to the Vice-Chancellor of Ajayi Crowther University, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, and the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Archbishop Vining College of Theology, Akure, who is also the Lord Bishop of Ijesha-North East Diocese, The Rt. Rev. Joseph Olusola. The presentation took place in the presence of the Rector, AVCTA, Ven. Associate Prof. Moses Adetunmbi, on Wednesday, 3rd June, 2026. The MoU establishes a framework for AVCTA to offer Postgraduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Arts (MA), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Christian Religious Studies, all to be awarded by Ajayi Crowther University.

According to the MoU, both institutions share a common heritage and vision. Ajayi Crowther University, a private institution established by the Supra Diocesan Board (West) of the Church of Nigeria, aims to produce graduates instilled with the fear of God and a sense of service to humanity. The Archbishop Vining College of Theology, established by the All African Bishops Conference of October 2004 and the General Synod Resolution of the Church of Nigeria, provides academic and professional training in Christian Theology with emphasis on relevance to contemporary society.

Under the agreement, the theological college will run only accredited programmes available in the University’s Department of Religion and Development Studies. The curriculum of ACU will be used, and all degrees (including B.A. (Hons), PGD, M.A., and PhD) will be conferred by the University.

The MoU also stipulate that academic staff involved in teaching must hold PhDs in relevant fields, though Master’s degree holders may be engaged in areas where personnel are in short supply. All credentials of prospective academic staff shall be screened and approved by Ajayi Crowther University.

To ensure quality, the University reserves the right to periodically visit the seminary at the beginning and end of each semester. A representative from the Department of Religion and Development Studies would also supervise examinations at AVCTA. All computed examination results must be sent through the University’s Department of Religion and Development Studies and Faculty of Humanities for consideration and approval by the University Senate, which has the sole power to award degrees under the enabling law.

Other conditions stipulated in the MoU include admission requirements and duration for the PGD programme, MA programme, and PhD programme, as well as the duration of study for each academic programme, graduation and convocation procedures, and financial arrangements including profit sharing. The MoU also add that every MA and PhD candidate must defend their dissertation or thesis orally before a panel of examiners approved by the Board of Postgraduate Studies and the University Senate.

The collaboration is expected to provide clergy and laity in the Anglican Communion and beyond with enhanced access to quality postgraduate theological education without requiring them to relocate from Akure. The MoU emphasises mutual respect for the academic and financial benefits of both institutions, with a shared commitment to producing graduates equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st century through sound Christian scholarship.

VC Warns of Digital Age Spiritual Crisis as She Delivers AVCTA Convocation Lecture

The Vice-Chancellor, Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, has issued a stark warning about the spiritual perils of the digital age, arguing that smartphones and screens are not neutral tools but powerful forces actively shaping Christian attention, temptation, and discipleship.

Speaking before an audience of bishops, clergy, scholars, and graduating students on Wednesday, 3rd June 2026, at the 41st Convocation Lecture of Archbishop Vining College of Theology, Akure (AVCTA), Ondo State, Prof. Oduwole declared that "technology is one of the great forces of our time" and challenged the church to confront how digital devices are quietly re-forming the habits of the heart.

In her lecture titled "Technology and Spiritual Life: How Screens Shape Attention, Temptation, and Discipleship," Prof. Oduwole said, "The central question is not whether Christians should use technology, but what kind of spiritual people our tech habits produce."

She observed that many believers now struggle to pray for even ten minutes without reaching for their phones, and that in Nigerian churches, pastors regularly plead with congregants to silence devices during worship, a plea that increasingly goes unheeded.

Most striking was the lecture's examination of how screens have transformed the nature of temptation. The Vice-Chancellor noted that morally compromising content that once required deliberate effort to access is now available in seconds, in complete privacy.

Using Nigerian examples, she pointed to the explosive growth of mobile betting platforms, which are now accessible to university students and have fueled a rise in youth gambling.

The lecture also critiqued how social media encourages what philosopher Charles Taylor called "expressive individualism." According to her, "Christianity invites humility, self-denial, and transformation in Christ," adding that, "Yet in digital culture, self-promotion, branding, and performative visibility are rewarded. Not even the ministry is spared. Sermons become content. Worship becomes a spectacle."

She cautioned that some religious leaders have begun measuring spiritual worth by follower counts and online influence, a drift she described as a gradual but dangerous redefinition of pastoral identity.

Despite the sobering assessment, the lecture concluded with practical hope, as she called for intentional practices of silence, solitude, and contemplative prayer as forms of "spiritual resistance" in a noisy age. Prof. Oduwole urged Christians to evaluate technology not by whether an activity is permitted, but by whether it "enriches love and fosters connection with God."

Prof. Oduwole posited that "screens are not only a threat; they are also tools." She celebrated redemptive uses of digital tools, noting that in Nigeria, WhatsApp broadcast lists have become primary channels for discipleship, with pastors sending daily devotionals to thousands of members. Bible apps like YouVersion now offer Scripture in Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba, while seminaries including the Theological College of Northern Nigeria use Zoom to train rural pastors who cannot relocate to urban centres.

In a challenge to theological education, the Vice-Chancellor concluded by addressing the unique responsibility of institutions like Archbishop Vining College of Theology. She said, "The challenge facing theological colleges is tremendous and pressing. It is not only to educate ministers for the church of today but also to create those whose example is truly spiritual and who can lead humanity through the moral and existential challenges of the digital era."

Quoting Jesus from the Gospel of Mark, she asked, "What good is it if a man gains the whole world and loses his soul?" The answer, she suggested, turns on a single question: "Is the user controlling the screen, or is the screen controlling the user?"

ACU Student, Oluwapelumi Aikomo, Shines at Global Surveyors’ Conference in South Africa

Oluwapelumi Aikomo, a 500-level student in the Department of Geo-informatics and Surveying at Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, is currently flying Nigeria’s flag high at the prestigious FIG (Federation of International Surveyors) Conference 2026, holding in Cape Town, South Africa.

Aikomo, who is attending the conference in a dual capacity, representing both Ajayi Crowther University and her country Nigeria, was invited to present a research paper before an audience of global surveying and geospatial experts.

Her presentation, described by attendees as “exceptional” and a true reflection of excellence, has drawn significant praise and placed ACU on the international research map.

Aikomo, alongside co-authors Elufisan Tomilola and Tata Herbert, presented the abstract titled, “Towards Improved Geodetic Modelling: Prediction of Gravity Values Using Artificial Neural Networks in Akure, Nigeria.” And it explores how artificial intelligence can solve a long-standing challenge in geophysics.

In her study, Aikomo used a multi-layered Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict gravity values in Akure, a task traditionally hampered by sparse data and complex, non-linear relationships that conventional interpolation methods struggle to model. She collected data from 59 stations using a South GNSS instrument and a Lacoste & Romberg gravimeter, applying necessary corrections including latitude, drift, tide, free air, and Bouguer corrections.

Her ANN model, which incorporated 40 hidden layers, achieved promising results: a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.0286 mGal, a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.0220 mGal, and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.6269. While she acknowledged that the limited dataset constrains broader generalisation, she stressed that the findings demonstrate the feasibility of AI-based gravity prediction in Nigeria and called for denser gravity observations to improve robustness.

Back home, the Vice-Chancellor, Ajayi Crowther University, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, and her management team have already wished Oluwapelumi well, describing her as a worthy ambassador of the institution and a rising star in the field of geoinformatics.

Prof. Ampitan Delivers ACU 29th Inaugural Lecture

…Warns Against Faith Desecration, Materialism in Modern Churches

The contemporary church risks losing its prophetic and moral voice as materialism, corruption, and sensationalism increasingly replace the original mission of Christianity, Prof. Johnson Afolabi Ampitan has warned.

Delivering the 29th Inaugural Lecture of Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, titled "The Contemporary Church and Christian Faith Desecration: An Account of a New Testament Scholar," Prof. Ampitan described the church not as a mere building but as the body of believers called from darkness into Christ's light.

Drawing a sharp contrast between the early church and modern Christianity, the scholar noted that early Christians focused on daily needs rather than material accumulation, practiced generosity, and shared possessions with the poor. That community welfare, he said, strengthened church growth and unity.

Warning that "Materialism risks distorting the original Christian mission," Prof. Ampitan lamented that many modern churches now emphasise prosperity and wealth, with religious commitment sometimes measured by financial giving.

In a strong rebuke of trends within contemporary Christianity, the lecturer highlighted faith desecration through corruption, greed, and dishonesty that have infiltrated church practices. He accused some leaders of prioritising wealth over salvation and holiness.

Among the unscriptural conducts he listed were corruption among Christian politicians and leaders, exploitation of church members through prosperity teachings, moral decadence, ritualism, and unethical practices.

Prof. Ampitan also diagnosed a leadership crisis in the church, noting that some ministers commercialise the gospel for personal gain, while church leaders often ignore corruption due to financial benefits. He called for integrity and accountability in ministry.

Contrasting the miracles of Jesus with those of modern churches, the scholar stressed that "Miracles should complement faith, not replace the gospel," while raising major concerns over the decline in spirituality, commercialisation, and the loss of focus on salvation, holiness, and service.

In his conclusion, Prof. Ampitan challenged the church to recover its original mission, insisting that Christianity must prioritise righteousness over materialism, and offered recommendations including a return to biblical teachings, honesty, humility, and genuine discipleship.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, described Prof. Ampitan as a scholar of repute, who has served the university in various capacities. The lecture drew a wide audience of academics, clergy, and students who called it a timely call for reformation.

NESA Summit: Nigerian Students Charged on Evidence-Based Policies to Reshape Economy

The Nigerian Economics Students' Association (NESA), Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) Chapter, has convened a landmark summit, urging the nation's future policymakers to embrace innovation, integrity, and evidence-based strategies in rethinking Nigeria's economic trajectory.

The NextGen Policymakers Summit, themed "The Role of Future Policymakers in Rethinking and Accelerating Nigeria's Economic Development," drew academics, policy experts, and students to the university campus, where speakers delivered impassioned calls for a new generation of ethical and strategic leaders.

In her opening address, the Vice-Chancellor, Ajayi Crowther University, Prof. Ebunoluwa Oduwole, described the gathering as "a strategic investment in the future of Nigeria" and warned that persistent policy inconsistency and "policy somersault" have crippled the nation's progress.

According to Prof. Oduwole, "Over the years, many policies have failed to produce the desired impact because successive administrations often abandon existing policies without proper continuity, evaluation, or strategic implementation." "This lack of consistency has affected economic growth, investment confidence, educational development, youth employment, and the overall welfare of citizens," she added.

She challenged students to rise as "ethical leaders, transformational economists, responsible public servants, and visionary policymakers," noting that universities must produce not just graduates with certificates but "future leaders, reformers, innovators, and policymakers who will positively shape the destiny of our nation and the African continent."

Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, immediate past President of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), urged emerging policymakers to actively reshape Nigeria's economy through innovation and evidence-based policy formulation.

Prof. Adenikinju emphasised that effective policymaking must be grounded in real-world conditions, warning that policies detached from empirical reality are unlikely to succeed. He advised students to adopt a global outlook while tailoring solutions to local realities, stressing that "thinking globally and acting locally" remains essential in addressing Nigeria's developmental challenges.

He further prioritised education as a critical investment for building human capital and driving national development, while encouraging students to uphold integrity, accountability, fairness, and transparency in all policy decisions.

In a like manner, other speakers such as Dr. Femi Oladele, Lead Coach at MORE by Meristem; Ambassador Emmanuel Agida, ECOWAS Youth Ambassador and President of Emmanuel Agida International equally echoed calls for practical engagement, while Prince Adedeji Adeyemo, Special Assistant to the Oyo State Governor on Political Matters, also contributed insights on governance and youth empowerment.

In her remarks, Prof. Abiola Aina, Head, Department of Economics, charged participants to "think beyond the board and accelerate Nigeria's economy," urging students to translate summit lessons into actionable change.

Earlier in the day, the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Joseph Ibikunle, led the keynote speaker, Prof. Aina and Olashinde Oluwafunmise, President NESA, ACU chapter, on a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor in her office.

According to Prof. Oduwole, the Vice-Chancellor, the summit, organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences, reaffirmed Ajayi Crowther University's commitment to raising graduates who are "intellectually sound, morally upright, spiritually grounded, and socially responsible."

The summit ended with the presentation of plaques of honour to the guest speakers in recognition of their contributions to the event.
