UNIPORT, Access Bank Strengthen Partnership

The University of Port Harcourt is set to deepen its partnership with Access Bank Plc, with a renewed focus on collaborations that support the University's developmental vision and enhance the welfare of the University community.
The commitment was reaffirmed on Monday, September 21, 2026, when the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration and Advancement, Prof. Chukwudi Onyeaso, received a delegation from Access Bank led by its Regional Director, South and South-East, Mr. Oluropo Olanrewaju, on a courtesy visit.

Mr. Olanrewaju reaffirmed the bank's commitment to supporting the University's vision and exploring additional areas of collaboration with the University community snd congratulated the Vice Chancellor on his appointment as the 10th Vice Chancellor .

Responding, Prof. Onyeaso appreciated Access Bank for its continued partnership and expressed the University's readiness to strengthen the existing relationship for a stronger and mutually beneficial partnership.

NITDA, iDICE Set to Establish Technical/Robotic Centre of Excellence at UNIPORT

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) Programme, is set to establish a Technical/Robotic Centre of Excellence at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).
The development follows a visit by a delegation from NITDA and iDICE to the University on Monday, September 21, 2026, as part of efforts towards the establishment of the Centre.

The delegation, led by the Senior Manager, NITDA Abuja Office, Engr. Aminayanasam Omorieokuma, inspected relevant facilities and engaged the University on its preparedness to host the Centre.
The delegation was received on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill, by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration and Advancement, Prof. Chukwudi Onyeaso.

Speaking during the visit, Engr. Omorieokuma said the proposed Centre is intended to strengthen technological capacity, innovation and practical skills development, particularly in emerging areas of technology.

The initiative is expected to provide a platform for students, researchers and other beneficiaries to develop practical competencies in areas including robotics and other emerging technologies. NITDA's existing technology initiatives include research and development in artificial intelligence, robotics, drones, Internet of Things, digital manufacturing and other emerging technologies.

The iDICE Programme, which stands for Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises, is a Federal Government-backed programme designed to promote entrepreneurship, innovation, job creation and economic transformation through the growth of Nigeria's digital technology and creative ecosystems.

Responding, the representative of the Vice Chancellor,Prof. Chukwudi Onyeaso expressed the University's appreciation to NITDA and the iDICE Programme for considering UNIPORT for the initiative.
He said the proposed Centre aligns with the vision of the Vice-Chancellor, particularly his emphasis on digitalisation, innovation, collaboration and the development of relevant skills to prepare students for the demands of a rapidly changing technological environment.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor assured the delegation of the University's full cooperation and support towards the realisation of the project.
He expressed optimism that the Centre would significantly expand opportunities for practical learning, research, innovation and technology-driven skills development within the University and expressed appreciation to Prof Bourdillon Omijeh for facilitating this lauded initiative

UNIPORT Reschedules Second Semester Examinations Affected by ASUU Strike

The University of Port Harcourt has announced adjustments to the schedule for the ongoing Second Semester Examinations following the recent Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike, which affected some examination dates.

In a memorandum dated September 21, 2026, the Registrar, Mrs Gloria O. Chindah, PhD, said examinations scheduled for the remaining days of this week—from Tuesday, September 22 to Friday, September 25, 2026—will hold as scheduled, with no changes to the existing timetable.

According to the adjustment, examinations that could not hold on September 17, 18 and 21 have been rescheduled for September 28, 29 and 30, 2026, respectively.
The examinations will take place at the same times and venues indicated in the original timetables.

The University also announced that ECO 102.2 will now be written on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.

Similarly, examinations originally scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, 2026, have been rescheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2026, at the same times and venues.

The University Management urges all students affected by the adjustments to take note of the revised dates and make the necessary preparations accordingly.

UNIPORT, CHINA-JAPAN-ROK EXPLORE PARTNERSHIP FOR WEST AFRICA-CHINA INSTITUTE

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Chike Princewill, on Friday, September 18, 2026, received the Director, China-Japan-ROK Innovation Cooperation Center, Amb. Jay Xu, who paid a courtesy visit to his office.
The meeting focused on exploring areas of collaboration and the proposed establishment of a West Africa China Institute at the University of Port Harcourt.
The proposed Institute is expected to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, innovation in Agriculture and Technology, and human capital development, benefiting the University and the wider West African region.
Prof. Chike Princewill welcomed the proposal, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen academic and developmental cooperation.
The Vice-Chancellor also called for the inclusion of Chinese Language in the University's curriculum to deepen cultural and educational exchange and create broader opportunities for members of the University community.

UniPort VC Reaffirms Commitment to Host Communities, Promises Stronger Partnerships.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Chike Princewill, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening relationships and partnerships with the University’s host communities for mutual development.

Professor Chike gave the assurance on Saturday, September 12, 2026, during familiarisation visits to the palaces of the traditional rulers of Aluu, Choba and Akpor Kingdoms. The visits formed part of his ongoing engagement with stakeholders and marked his formal introduction to the monarchs as the University’s 10th Vice-Chancellor.

Accompanied by the University’s Principal Officers, the Vice-Chancellor explained that the visits were intended to deepen mutual understanding, sustain cordial relations and create a stronger platform for collaboration between the University and its host communities.
He said his administration would work closely with the traditional institutions to identify their concerns, understand the challenges confronting the communities and explore practical ways of addressing issues of mutual interest.

In Aluu Kingdom, he met with His Royal Majesty, Eze Chima Okpara, the Nyenweali of Aluu Kingdom. He also visited His Royal Highness, Eze Raymond Webilor Okocha, the Nyenweali of Choba, before proceeding to the palace of His Royal Majesty, Eze Amb. Levi Ozowunwu Amos Orlu Oriebe, JP, Nye We Ali Akpor.

Professor Chike assured the monarchs that the concerns raised would receive due attention within the framework of the University’s policies and available opportunities. He promised that his administration would maintain open communication with the traditional institutions, work with them to better understand the needs of their communities and promote initiatives capable of advancing peace, inclusion and sustainable development.

The Vice-Chancellor further emphasised that the University could achieve more when it enjoys the support and cooperation of its host communities. He called for continued dialogue, mutual respect and partnership, noting that the University’s presence should contribute positively to the social and economic development of the communities around it.

The traditional rulers welcomed the Vice-Chancellor and his entourage, expressing delight at the visits and reaffirming their commitment to sustaining cordial relations with the University. Their requests included employment opportunities for qualified indigenes, consideration of indigenous firms for contract awards, and improved admission opportunities for candidates from their respective kingdoms. They also expressed interest in stronger partnerships with the University to promote the development of their communities.

OPM Church Pledges Support for University of Port Harcourt, Commends VC’s Track Record

The Omega Power Ministry (OPM) Church has pledged its continued support for the University of Port Harcourt and congratulated the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chike Princewill,on his appointment as the University’s 10th Vice-Chancellor.

The church made this known during a visit to the University, where it commended the Vice-Chancellor for his achievements and expressed confidence that the impact he made while serving as Commissioner for Health in Rivers State would be replicated in his new role.

Speaking during the visit, the Founder and General Overseer of OPM, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, said the church would support the University and expressed his intention to undertake a project that would have a meaningful impact on the lives of members of the University community and the wider society.

Apostle Chinyere said he would consult with the University administration to identify an appropriate project and work with the University towards the development of a befitting structure that would add value to the institution.

The OPM General Overseer noted that the University’s national reach and longstanding reputation were among the strategic considerations behind the choice of the University of Port Harcourt for beneficiaries of the church’s scholarship programme.

He disclosed that OPM has students benefiting from its scholarship scheme at the University, adding that the decision to enrol them at the University was strategic, given its national spread and reputation for academic excellence.

Apostle Chinyere commended Professor Chike and wished him success in his administration, urging him to sustain the trajectory of achievements associated with his previous public service, particularly his tenure as Commissioner for Health in Rivers State.

Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chike Princewill, commended Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere and OPM for their humanitarian services, particularly their interventions in the lives of the less-privileged, vulnerable and indigent members of society.

Professor Chike expressed appreciation for OPM’s support for the education of indigent students through the payment of their school fees, noting that such interventions provide beneficiaries with opportunities to improve their lives and pursue a more meaningful future.

Professor Chike welcomed the proposed partnership with the church and expressed the University’s readiness to engage with OPM on initiatives that would contribute to the development of the institution.

The Bishop of the Niger Delta North Diocese of the Anglican Communion,The Rt Rev Wisdom Budu Ihunwo visited the University of Port Harcourt’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Chike Princewill to congratulate him on his appointment, offer prayers for his administration, and strengthen ties between the Church and the University.
The Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude for the Church’s influence on his life and pledged to lead with integrity, uphold the University’s mandate, and improve its national ranking.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, received a delegation from the Airtel Regional Team, Port Harcourt, on a courtesy visit to his office.

The delegation, led by the Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Prof. Mary Pascal Iwundu, visited the Vice-Chancellor to formally acquaint him with the directives of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Mathew Michael, who spoke on behalf of the Airtel Regional Team, expressed the organisation's willingness to establish a strong working relationship with the University. He stated that Airtel was readily available to partner with the institution, particularly in providing effective and reliable network services to support communication and digital connectivity within the University community.

Dr. Michael further noted that the proposed collaboration would explore opportunities for partnership in delivering services in line with the objectives and initiatives of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), aimed at enhancing access to efficient internet and communication services.

According to him, improved digital connectivity remains critical to advancing teaching, learning, research, administration, and other services in a modern university environment. He therefore expressed the team's readiness to work closely with the University of Port Harcourt to explore areas of mutual benefit that would enhance internet access and communication infrastructure.

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chike Princewill, reaffirmed his administration's commitment to supporting initiatives and partnerships that would enhance effective service delivery across the University. He noted the importance of technology and reliable communication infrastructure in driving institutional efficiency and achieving the University's broader objectives in an increasingly digital world.

The University of Port Harcourt today, Tuesday, September 1, 2026, held a Special Convocation Ceremony in honour of the late Professor Tammy Orunaboka at the New Convocation Arena.
Prof. Orunaboka was a former Dean, Faculty of Education, and a lecturer in the Department of Sports and Exercise Science.
The ceremony featured academic procession and funeral oration, as the University community, family, friends and colleagues gathered to honour his memory and celebrate his contributions to the University.
