NSE President backs Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic, Uyo on skills-driven education..seeks stronger
partnership..IMP can serve as ÇOREN liaison centre - Former Registrar
The Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic (IMP), Uyo, has received a major endorsement from the national leadership of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), with the Society pledging closer collaboration to strengthen technical education and produce industry-ready graduates for Nigeria's growing workforce.
The commitment was made during a working visit to the Polythenic's facilities by the National President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, FNSE, FAEng, MFR, accompanied by the Chairman NSE Abak Branch Engr Nsikak Akpan led a high-powered delegation to the institution.
The team was received by the Founder and Promoter of the Polytechnic, Engr. (Dr.) Victor E. U. Williams, the Rector, Dr. Christopher Akas, and members of the institution's management.
Speaking during the visit, the Founder, Dr. Williams Utong welcoming the visitors described the institution as a centre of excellence committed to practical, innovation-driven education.
He explained that the Polytechnic is popularly known as "One Polytechnic, Two Qualifications" because, beyond awarding academic certificates, it equips students with marketable skills needed to thrive in today's competitive workplace.
The Polytechnic boss also revealed that, in support of the Akwa Ibom State Government's tourism development drive, the institution had recently awarded scholarships to no fewer than 200 students studying Tourism and Hospitality Management to help develop globally competitive professionals capable of showcasing the state's rich culinary heritage and tourism potential.
He noted that the institution's guiding philosophy is anchored on "Knowledge, Vision and Skills," stressing that Akwa Ibom's position as a hub for oil and gas investments requires a steady supply of competent engineers, technologists, technicians and other skilled professionals.
He called for a strategic partnership with the NSE in manpower development and technical skills training, saying such collaboration would benefit the institution, the engineering profession and the nation's economy.
Responding, NSE President Engr. Rabiu said no nation could achieve sustainable development without investing in technical skills and technology.
He commended the Polytechnic for integrating practical learning with vocational skills acquisition, describing its educational model as one that aligns with the vision and values of the engineering profession.
The President further assured the institution of the Society's readiness to partner in mentoring and developing young engineers, helping bridge the gap between the classroom and industry.
Also speaking, the current Chairman of the NSE Board of Fellows and former Registrar of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering (ÇOREN), Engr. Kamila Wopa Maliki, praised the institution for its steady growth and commitment to addressing Nigeria's technical skills deficit.
He urged lecturers, technologists and technicians to obtain professional certification through COREN, describing certification as essential to maintaining standards in the profession.
Maliki further proposed that Ibom Metropolitan Polytechnic should serve as a liaison centre for ÇOREN meetings, workshops and professional training programmes, giving students greater exposure to emerging trends and innovations in the engineering industry.
