BMU HOLDS HISTORIC FIRST GOVERNING COUNCIL MEETING AT SAMPOU CAMPUS, 16TH AND 17TH SEPTEMBER, 2026

The Governing Council of Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) on Wednesday, September 16, and Thursday, September 17, 2026, held its 27th Regular Meeting at the Senate Building, Sampou Campus. It was the first time the Council formally sat at the Sampou Campus, a historic moment in the growth and expansion of the University. It also fulfilled a major goal of the University's 2026 ASPIRE vision to fully implement operations at the Satellite Campus.
In attendance were the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Tarila Tebepah; the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dimie Ogoina; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Admin), Prof. Aloysius E. Ligha; and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Sampou), Prof. Godwill Ziriki. Other principal officers, Council members and management staff of the University were also present.

The Pro-Chancellor welcomed the Council members and thanked them for their steady support and their role in maintaining stability and synergy in the University's highest administrative body. He stated that holding the meeting at the Sampou Campus was one of the clearest physical confirmation of the University's readiness.

Speaking during the meeting, The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dimie Ogoina described hosting the Council session at Sampou as a major milestone for the ASPIRE Agenda. He stressed that the Satellite Campus is no longer just a plan on paper but a fully functional academic reality, designed to scale up medical training and research. He thanked the Governing Council for its foresight in establishing the Campus and noted that work on the facilities is progressing significantly.
During the two-day meeting, Council members reviewed key institutional matters and strategic plans aimed at advancing the ASPIRE Agenda and strengthening academic and infrastructural development across both Campuses. The deliberations brought together key stakeholders to consider policies and strategies to guide the management of the University and raise the standard of the institution.

At the end of the second day, Council members toured the Campus facilities, including the Campus Auditorium, the Lecture Pavilion and classrooms, to assess their readiness for academic and institutional functions.

ASPIRE AGENDA ON THE MOVE! EXCELLENCE IN MOTION: BMU CELEBRATES
FULL ACCREDITATION OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE PROGRAMME.

ASPIRE AGENDA attains another exceptional performance in the University’s journey
towards academic excellence: the Department of Medical Laboratory Science has been
granted Full Accreditation by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN)
for the training of Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) students.

The accreditation is valid for five years, with an approved intake of 50 students per
session. This outstanding achievement is a strong testament to the visionary and purposeful
leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dimie Ogoina, whose commitment to academic excellence, institutional development and global standards continues to produce tangible results. It is yet another clear demonstration that the ASPIRE Agenda is not merely a vision, it is a programme of action and measurable
achievements.

Speaking, the Vice Chancellor expressed his profound appreciation to His Excellency,
the Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri for his continued commitment to the
development of the Bayelsa Medical University and for providing the resources and
enabling environment necessary for the University to achieve these important
milestones.

Special commendation goes to the Governing Council, the Faculty of Health Sciences,
the Dean and the entire University Management for their strategic support.
Special recognition goes to Dr. Marcella Tari Joshua, Head of Department, Med Lab
Science as well as academic and non-academic staff of that department for their dedication, professionalism and painstaking preparation for the accreditation exercise.

Commendation also goes to the students of the Department, whose commitment and confidence continue to give meaning to the University’s mission.

*Bayelsa Government Presents Two Coaster Buses to BMU*-August 11, 2026.

The State Government has fulfilled its promise to the Bayelsa Medical University, BMU, with the presentation of two coaster buses to the institution’s management.

Presenting the vehicle documents to the Vice Chancellor of BMU, Prof. Dimie Ogoina, at Government House, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, said the procurement was in response to the pressing needs of the specialized tertiary institution.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Douye Diri, Prof. Ayawei urged the university management to make judicious use of the buses, noting that they would ease the movement of staff and students between the main campus in Yenagoa and Sampou campuses.
"We congratulate you on behalf of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri. These buses are meant to improve logistics and support academic activities," he said.
Receiving the documents on behalf of the Governing Council, management, staff and students of BMU, Prof. Ogoina expressed appreciation to His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri and the state government for fulfilling the promise.

The VC recalled that the Governor had earlier pledged support for the university, which trains medical professionals including surgeons for hospitals within and outside the state.
"As an institution with two campuses, these vehicles will significantly enhance movement, improve staff and student welfare, and promote academic activities at BMU," Prof. Ogoina said.
He further assured the state government that the university would ensure optimal use and proper maintenance of the buses.
Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, congratulated BMU on the successful allocation of the buses. He thanked Governor Diri for keeping his word to the university community.

The presentation was witnessed by the Acting Chief of Staff Government House, Hon. Irorodamie Komonibo and some members of the BMU management team such as the SAVC/PRO, Dr. Mrs. Marie Teibowei, Mr. Clarkson Ikati, transport Officer and Me. Lucky Imbasi Protocol/PAVC.

BMU ON THE MOVE: BAYELSA MEDICAL UNIVERSITY SECURES APPROVAL FOR BACHELOR OF RADIOGRAPHY PROGRAMME

Bayelsa Medical University (BMU), Yenagoa, has recorded another major milestone with the approval of its Bachelor of Radiography Programme by the Radiographers’ Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) following a successful resource verification exercise.

In a letter dated 28th July, 2026, signed on behalf of the Registrar/Chief Executive of the Board, the RRBN confirmed that the University’s Radiography programme met the required standards after scoring over 50 in both academic content and physical facilities at the academic and clinical levels during the resource verification exercise conducted on 17th June, 2026.

This achievement further reflects Bayelsa Medical University’s unwavering commitment to delivering quality medical education through world-class teaching, modern infrastructure, and strict adherence to regulatory standards.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dimie Ogoina, congratulates the University community on the achievement, this is another testament to the institution’s pursuit of excellence under the University’s innovation-driven ASPIRE Agenda.

The approval adds to the growing list of academic successes recorded by the University and reinforces its position as one of Nigeria’s leading institutions for medical and health sciences education.

BMU ON THE MOVE: ONGOING JUPEB EXAMINATION

In line with the innovation-driven ASPIRE Agenda of Bayelsa Medical University (BMU), the University successfully conducted a Physics Objective Examination for 172 Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) students at the University’s Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre on Tuesday, 4th August 2026.

The examination was administered entirely as a Computer-Based Test (CBT), providing many of the students with their first experience of taking an objective examination using a digital platform. Despite this, the students demonstrated remarkable confidence and competence in navigating the CBT system, completing the examination with ease.

The exercise was conducted seamlessly in a calm and orderly environment under the strict supervision of examination officials, ensuring adherence to the University’s high standards of transparency, fairness, and academic integrity.

The successful conduct of the examination further underscores Bayelsa Medical University’s commitment to leveraging technology to improve teaching, learning, and assessment. It reflects the institution’s continuous drive to promote innovation, enhance operational efficiency, and deliver academic excellence in line with the University’s ASPIRE Agenda.
