🏃‍♂️ Why running is good for your mind, too.

Last weekend, 70 alumni participated in the Science Run. The perfect way to start off this year’s Alumni Week.

Because running’s not only good for your physical health. A quick jog is good for your mental health, too.

Why? Running reduces stress, helps produce endorphins and dopamine, and can improve your sleep.

At the UvA/HvA AI Chat Hackathon at NEMO, student teams spent the day creating new ways to make learning with AI Chat more fun and effective.

UvA AI Chat is the UvA’s own AI environment for students and staff, designed with privacy, data protection and the needs of the academic community in mind.

In the new study Women’s Emancipation According to the Dutch Public, Mark Boukes (UvA), Quita Muis (Tilburg University), Norah Schulten (UvA) and Liza Mügge (UvA) analyse Dutch people’s attitudes toward gender equality.

What stands out to the researchers is how positive Dutch people are, on average, about women’s emancipation. “Across all the questions we asked, the majority of respondents—more than 85%, and in some cases more than 95%—expressed support for women’s rights in society,” says Mark Boukes in the conversation with Liza Mügge, in which they discuss their findings.

While public attitudes are largely positive, reality paints a less optimistic picture. This is also reflected in the Global Gender Gap Index, published last week, in which the Netherlands has fallen again in terms of gender equality. This concerns, for example, the share of women in senior positions in business and politics, and the unequal division of paid work and care responsibilities in heterosexual relationships.

In the new study ‘Women’s Emancipation According to the Dutch Public’, researchers Mark Boukes (UvA), Quita Muis (Tilburg University), Norah Schulten (UvA) and Liza Mügge (UvA) examine the opinions of Dutch citizens on gender equality, including support for abortion, women in leadership and working mothers.

Overall, support for women’s rights remains high: more than 85%—and on some issues more than 95%—of respondents support gender equality.

However, the survey data also reveal a worrying downward trend. Dutch people have become slightly less critical of intimate partner violence against women, while more respondents see it as a problem when a woman earns more than her male partner. The researchers will monitor whether these downward trends continue in the next survey, in four years’ time.
