We gave a VU student a camera to capture her summer on film 💙

No filters, no retakes, just summer as it happened.

Here’s what she came back with 📸

Three students. One rector. One imposter. 👀

Can you spot who’s bluffing?

Our Vice-President, Marcel Nollen, is stepping down after seven years 📣

During his time on the Executive Board, he experienced and helped navigate many changes and challenges at VU Amsterdam, including a global pandemic, major changes to our IT and administration, new buildings, sustainability projects, and important dialogues around safety and security.

Looking back, Marcel sees helping make VU Amsterdam more flexible, agile and entrepreneurial as one of his most important contributions.

Throughout his farewell interview, one thing stands out: his focus on people. He strongly believes in collegial governance, in working together, trusting one another, and recognising that no one can do this work alone.

And his message to the VU community?

“Blijf doen, blijf vieren en blijf voor ogen houden voor wie we het allemaal doen.”

Which translates to: “Keep doing, keep celebrating, and keep in mind who we are doing it all for.”

Thank you, Marcel, for seven years of commitment to VU Amsterdam 💙

We wish you all the best for what comes next!

The new academic year has started! 🎓

Yesterday, we celebrated the Opening of the Academic Year, with this year’s theme: Free Thinkers.

A big thank you to all the speakers and organisers who made this event so memorable.

Here are a few highlights:

🎤 Roxane van Iperen delivered the keynote, reflecting on how we can continue to think freely in an age of Big Tech and authoritarian world leaders.
📰 Nikki Sterkenburg discussed the conditions necessary for free thinking.
🤖 Sandjai Bhulai demonstrated how AI can strengthen our capacity for independent thought.
🎵 VU Griffioen Vocal Group concluded the programme with a wonderful performance.

We wish everyone a wonderful academic year! 💙

Happy World Pride! 🏳️‍🌈💙

We're proud to be sailing in WorldPride Amsterdam 2026 as part of Pride University!

Together with UvA, Inholland, HvA, ROC van Amsterdam and Mediacollege Amsterdam, we celebrate diversity, visibility and inclusion for LGBTQIA+ students, staff and allies.

As universities, we share a commitment to creating learning and working environments where everyone feels welcome, respected and free to be themselves.

This year is especially meaningful as Amsterdam hosts WorldPride for the first time, bringing together LGBTQIA+ communities from around the world!

Did you spot us?💙

Kicking off summer together at Déjà VU! ☀️💙

Yesterday, our students, alumni and staff came together on campus for our annual summer festival.

From live music and DJs to food trucks, inspiring activities and great conversations, it was wonderful to see our campus filled with energy and connection.

And yes, we experienced a true Dutch summer with a little rain along the way ☔. Thanks to a quick supply of ponchos and the fantastic spirit of our community, the celebration continued rain or shine.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make Déjà VU 2026 such a memorable edition. We’re already looking forward to next year! 🎉

VU Amsterdam ranks #1 in SustainaBul 2026 🌟

We’re happy to share that we recently received a Gold rating in the SustainaBul 2026 sustainability ranking and rank #1 among
Dutch universities and #2 overall.

The SustainaBul is a sustainability ranking of Dutch knowledge institutions.

This achievement belongs to the many students, researchers, lecturers and professional staff who work every day to embed sustainability into our education, research and campus operations.

At the same time, sustainability is never a finished project. There is still much to learn and improve. This recognition is a moment to reflect on how far we've come together and to keep moving forward with motivation.

A special thank you to everyone across our community, including the Sustainability Office and Green Office, whose dedication helps turn ideas into action 💚
