Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy The Anton Pannekoek Institute participates in the National Research School for Astronomy (NOVA) of Dutch astronomy.

The Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy of the University of Amsterdam is a world leading institute in high-energy astrophysics with top-rated internationally-oriented research groups in accreting black holes and neutron stars and in gamma-ray burst research. In addition there are research groups excelling in ground-based observational techniques and the study of stars and stellar evolution, a

s well as planet formation. Our institute is also the seat of the Transients Key Project of the international Low-Frequency Radio Array which is currently being constructed in the Netherlands. Our institute has expertise with, and access to, international observational facilities across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The institute has three full professors, approximately a dozen each of permanent research staff and postdocs, and about two dozen graduate students. Approximately half of our postdoc/student population is foreign, and thus English is the main language of our institute. Beyond the weekly colloquium and more informal pizza lunch seminar, there are several student-formed study groups, and many other social activities and interactions among the young people in our institute. The institute is 20 minutes from downtown Amsterdam on the UvA science campus, close to the informatics/computing technology center of the Netherlands.

🎥 A cosmic signal, an Earth-sized telescope, and three astronomers interviewing each other.

🎤 What is a fast radio burst? Why do repeating FRBs matter? And how can we trace them back to their origin?

⚡ Earlier this year, you may have seen the headline: astronomers pinpointed a repeating fast radio burst — only the fourth directly linked to a persistent radio source.

In this video, three of the authors from from the Anton Pannekoek Institute (University of Amsterdam), ASTRON, and the Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC (JIVE) take turns asking each other questions about the result and how the European VLBI Network (EVN) made it possible.

They also explain what this result tells us about the universe.

The study involves researchers from leading institutes around the world and is ongoing.

Prachtige reportage door van de waarneemtrip van Rudy, Rasjied en Alexander naar de Pic du Midi om de protoNUX (een nieuw type ) uit te testen. ZEER de moeite waard om te lezen, of als je geen tijd hebt om dan tenminste even de foto's te bekijken 🤩

Astronomie: Een groepje Nederlandse sterrenkundigen reist naar de Pyreneeën om op een bergtop hun nieuwe telescoop te testen. „Wij zijn de eersten die vanaf de aarde in dit golflengtebereik gaan waarnemen.”

Vandaag presenteren de eerstejaarsstudenten Natuur- en Sterrenkunde hun eerste wetenschappelijke posters! Onder de bezielde begeleiding van en zijn team hebben ze de afgelopen maanden op het dak hun eerste waarnemingen 🔭 gedaan en vandaag was dan de eindpresentatie, hier op Science Park. Zo krijgen ze meteen wat ervaring met waarnemen en leren het één en ander over hoe het is om wetenschapper te zijn.
