New Working Paper!
The paper reveals a clear increase in housing unaffordability in the Netherlands and a strong link with poorer mental health. The results show these dynamics to be starkly differentiated by tenure and age, disproportionately affecting renters and younger adults. The results underscore how changes in housing systems have intensified housing precarity, specifically within the rental sector, and reveal how this may contribute to worsening mental health at the population level.

If you live in Amsterdam, chances are you have come across a street sign that features the WhatsApp logo, followed by the word “buurtpreventie” (neighbourhood watch). In cities around the world, WhatsApp groups for security have encouraged neighbours to keep their eyes on the streets, and on each other. Through analysis of satellite imagery, UvA researchers found a substantial loss of green space in the cities of Amsterdam and Brussels, 15.7% per capita in Amsterdam and 26.5% in Brussels. This loss can be directly linked to urban densification processes. ‘Additions of green space were insufficient to compensate for the loss of green space through new development projects.’ Read more here:

The Centre for Urban Studies launches a new round of Seed Grants to be spent in 2022. In this round, four Seed Grants with a maximum of up to €2.500 per grant, and three Seed Grants XL with a maximum of up to €10.000 per grant will be awarded.
