“Rechtsruck überleben lernen” (Learning to Survive the Rightward Shift) is a two week performing arts festival I am curating at Theaterwerkstatt Pilkentafel in February 2029, one month before Germany’s next federal election, at a moment when the far right party Alternative for Germany is polling as the country’s strongest political force.
The festival does not aim to debate or persuade. Instead, it creates a space for those most directly threatened by the rise of the far right: immigrants, q***r and trans people, people of colour, and women whose bodily autonomy is increasingly being contested politically. Its aim is to learn from artists, journalists, lawyers and educators from Hungary, Poland, Georgia, El Salvador and the United States who have already experienced democratic erosion firsthand.
Through performances at Pilkentafel and public programmes developed with partners including the University of Flensburg, the city library, public broadcaster NDR, the independent newspaper WIRKLICH and Flensburg Regional Court, the festival asks: How do you stay safe under increasingly hostile governments? How do artists and communities continue to organise, make work and protect one another? And how do you preserve joy and solidarity in times shaped by fear?
The festival will be the first independent performing arts festival in Germany’s rural north to bring together this range of international perspectives on democratic backsliding and far right politics.
