On 14 April, we will organise a one-man-play about the life of writer and philosopher C.S. Lewis. The American actor Phil Crowley will dive into the role of Lewis and will take you, with humor and seriousness, through Lewis' life and works. It will take place at the VU at 19:30-21:30. A ticket for students is €6,50 and for adults €10,00. After the play there is some time to talk with an after drink. Hope to see you all!

The Abraham Kuyper Center for Science and the Big Questions is delighted to host a Summer Seminar on Scientific Progress: Individual and Collective. This three-day event will take place this August 24-26 at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.

What is scientific progress? In which ways do the individual and collective interact in scientific progress? And how can we cooperate to effectively respond to threats to scientific progress such as hyper-competition, fraud and questionable research practices?

We will discuss these and other questions about scientific progress with an interdisciplinary group of international speakers, including James Evans, Hanne Andersen, Aydin Mohseni and Duygu Uygun-Tunç. De lezing wordt gegeven door Wouter Veraart en heeft als titel: “Over de mogelijkheid van functioneel extreem geweld”
Wouter Veraart is hoogleraar Encyclopedie der Rechtswetenschap en Rechtsfilosofie aan de VU.

Vincent Traag will give a lecture on Causal intricacies of bias in the research system on May 19th 16:00 at the VU (and online). He will cover topics such as bias, disparities and concepts of fairness and their implications.

Abstract: Diversity and inclusion is an important topic in society, and is being studied in various fields, including studies of science itself. Many studies on diversity and inclusion in science analyse biases in various processes of research, such as prestige bias in peer review or gender bias in citations. However, bias as a concept is not always clearly defined in this context. We propose to define bias in this context as an unjustified direct causal effect. The proposed definition of bias is closely related to the notion of procedural fairness. In this context, disparity is another frequently used term, which we also define in terms of causal mechanisms. The proposed definition of disparity is closely related to the notion of distributive fairness. These causal foundations allow us to reason about bias, disparities, and various concepts of fairness and their implications, which relate to recent discussions in artificial intelligence. We discuss the implications of the proposed definitions for studying biases in the research system, and briefly reflect on potential effects of interventions to counter biases. We believe the proposed definitions contribute to a better appreciation of the causal intricacies and an improved understanding of policy implications of studies on bias.

De Imaginaire Sjaalman Papers

Wie kent het Pak van Sjaalman niet? De beroemde stapel met papers geschreven door Multatuli’s Sjaalman alias Max Havelaar? Een paper gaat ‘Over boschgeluiden’, een andere ‘Over de kansrekening’, weer een ander ‘Over de uitvinding der kuisheid’ en nog weer een ander ‘Over het schynbaar overwicht der westersche beschaving’, en zo gaat het bijna 150 titels door.

Jacqueline Bel en René van Woudenberg ontvangen in een reeks lunchbijeenkomsten gasten uit die iets vertellen over en naar aanleiding van die imaginaire Sjaalman papers. In september 2022 wordt de serie, die loopt tot de zomer van 2023, voortgezet met als gasten onder meer: Lale Gül, Pepijn Brandon, Inger Leemans, André Krouwel, Ronald Meester, Gerrit Glas, Marije Martijn, Jan Paul Crielaard, Piek Vossen, George Harinck, René van Woudenberg, Lourens de Vries en Liesje Schreuders. De serie wordt afgesloten met een conferentie waarop alle gasten aangevulde versies van hun bijdragen zullen presenteren. Die vormen de basis voor een boek dat in 2024 zal verschijnen.
