NHTV Leisure Studies

NHTV Leisure Studies page of the Leisure Studies programme (Bachelor of Science and Master of Science) at NHTV B It is a 12 month programme and consists of two phases.

NHTV Academy for Leisure organizes two academic programs in Leisure: a 3-year Bachelor of Science Leisure Studies and a 1-year Master of Science Leisure Studies. The BSc International Leisure Studies is an English-taught academic programme in leisure. In 3 years’ time, you will become an expert at finding and understanding answers to complex issues in the leisure sector. The programme combines Bus

iness Administration (marketing, economics, innovation and organisation) with Social Sciences (sociology, psychology and anthropology). The MSc Leisure Studies is a multidisciplinary, English-taught, academic Master programme. The aim of the first phase is to provide context in the form of master classes. In the second phase you will work on providing your own content to the field in the form of your master’s thesis. All five master courses in this initial phase will have a dynamic set-up in the sense that they are positioned within the context of Leisure in a Network Society. The master courses centre on the three main current research programmes in Leisure: Storytelling, Imagineering and Place-making.

It's just around the corner from Breda. Well known to most Dutch students, and a must-see (or must-experience?) for our newly arrived international students, if only because it provides an excellent case study of an experience-based leisure destination.

The traditional, fairytale-themed amusement park features elves, trolls and talking parrots, and its woodland setting and new hotel make it ideal for a family holiday

Does world heritage status do cities more harm than good? What do you think? What are your experiences?

The gambling-ridden clan jetties of Malaysia’s George Town were saved from ruin by the award of Unesco world heritage status, but their new fame left locals overwhelmed by a tide of invasive tourism. Can we ever get the balance right?

On Tuesday May 30th the first batch of 2016-2017 students from the premaster Leisure Studies and 3rd year bachelor students of the 3-year academic bachelor program International Leisure Studies (ILS), presented their posters based on their graduation research project.

We had the pleasure of welcoming many fascinating topics, such as:
•The impact of a major depressive disorder on holiday behavior
•Sexuality, body image and sport
•The Influence of Leisure Participation on the Loneliness of Young Adults and Adolescents
•Bedtime Procrastination
•How studying and stress influence the excessive alcohol use of young adults
•The role of social, cultural and economic capital on the attitudes of the Dutch towards non-western immigrants
•The Effect of Hedonic Consumption on Mental Well-Being
•Hybrid shopping

The poster sessions were unanimously considered to be a success in terms of the ability for students to demonstrate their acquired skills and research. The topics covered economic, social and psychological dimensions, which indicates the breath of our study program, which allows students to shape their own academic interests.

Yesterday, Pieter de Rooij (NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences), Vincent de Koning (De Doelen Rotterdam) and Wim Strijbosch (NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences) provided a presentation at Congres Podiumkunsten, a conference for the Dutch cultural sector. They shared several results of a large scale study on customer relationship management (CRM).

In this study, NHTV works together with HZ University of Applied Sciences, IT company Peppered and 5 reknown Dutch podia: Luxor Theater Rotterdam, De Doelen Rotterdam, Theater & Congres Orpheus, Schouwburg De Lawei and Stadsschouwburg Nijmegen & Concertgebouw De Vereeniging.

In their presentation, they focused on the first of three studies, in which they made use of experimental research designs to study marketing strategies such as personalisation, online vs. offline media and single-channel vs. multi-channel approaches. The project will continue until the end of 2017.

Writing a master's thesis is not just an individual proof of knowledge and skills, but also (and even more so) an opportunity to contribute to the scientific body of knowledge on your subject matter. Former master NHTV Leisure Studies student Marloes van Asperen has just published her first article on her research project, together with supervisor(s) Pieter de Rooij en Corne Dijkmans. Congratulations Marloes!

Is our weekend still as 'free' and 'leisurely' as it was intended in the early 20th century? Or did we manage to kill the weekend by becoming trapped in the work-and-spend cycle? What do you think?

Katrina Onstad has a crazy idea: why not take off a couple of days every week and relax? Don’t cram them with frantic shopping, desperate playdates or crafty work emails – and certainly don’t make them exactly the same as the other five

Master Leisure Studies student Mark van Helvoort was interviewed by E52 about his master's thesis project on expat's leisure behaviour. Do the places where expats spend their leisure time have an impact on how their social network develops? You can read his story here: https://e52.nl/en/research-how-do-expats-spend-their-free-time/

Expats and internationals, they provide Eindhoven with a lively and multicultural face. In our series ‘Internationals in Eindhoven’ (a new interview is published every Saturday, 9 have been published up to now), we also give that image a personal touch. But soon there will also be a scientific layer...
