Infrastructure and technology alone won't be enough to achieve SDG6.
At the UNESCO 27th IHP Council in Paris, IHE Delft Rector Graham Jewitt and Member State representatives from the Netherlands, Italy, China, Spain, the UAE, South Africa and France made it clear that lasting water security requires substantial, structural and long-term investment in institutional and human capacity.
Key initiatives were highlighted as drivers of change:
✅ Capacity Development Initiative
✅ Global Water Education Network
✅ Water Education Indicator
✅ Adopt a River
These efforts are aimed at raising the profile of water education and providing a key contribution to the Capacity Development Accelerator of SDG6 Global Acceleration Framework, feeding directly into Interactive Dialogue on Investments for Water.
This Side Event Upscaling Water Education and Capacity Development for Lasting Impact — co-organized by UNESCO, the Kingdom of the Netherlands 🇳🇱, IHE Delft, and CapNet — was a milestone on the road to the UN 2026 Water Conference, feeding directly into the Interactive Water Dialogue on Investment.
