On October 22, Dr. Anna L. Smith delivered an insightful exploring how the molten salt reactor technology could positively contribute to the use of .

Anna highlighted the limitations of conventional nuclear fuels, such as solid ceramic uranium oxide, and presented molten salt reactors as a promising alternative. These reactors use liquid fuel, offering inherent hashtag by design and producing less long-lived radioactive waste. A key challenge for advancing this technology lies in and modeling the chemical behavior of molten salt fuel, an area where Anna and her team are making groundbreaking progress. Their research underscores the potential of molten salt reactors to serve as a safe, sustainable base-load energy source for the future.

Direct emissions are from the direct combustion of fuel. But what are indirect emissions? It is basically the electricity that we use and the products we buy - even a new table. How to calculate these? Watch this 3min video by Prof. Kornelis Blok to discover the answer!

In the next decade, there need to be a million more homes in the Netherlands. Production will need to be accelerated to reach 100,000 houses per year.

The housing shortage cannot be solved solely by new construction. Marja Elsinga, a professor from the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment TU Delft and TU Delft alumni, suggests that we need to look creatively at the existing housing stock. Elsinga is the project manager of . In the initiative, launched in 2019, relevant disciplines within the faculty are working together to find solutions to the housing crisis.

One of the groups emerging from the initiative is , a group of students from across TU Delft, who aims to add new floors to flats and modernise them. Nikki de Zeeuw, SUM’s communication and branding coordinator, explains that the living space in each block of flats can be boosted by 30 to 50%. “We’re also putting residents first, in terms of a green environment and more social cohesion. Our basic principle is that everyone needs somewhere to live and it should be somewhere nice.”

After 3 years since our last visit to France, we were excited to return to Paris to meet local TU Delft alumni and those visiting the start-up conference on a boat on the Seine.

The Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland - RVO (Netherlands Enterprise Agency) and the 4TU federation organised a start-up mission to the VivaTech conference in Paris to support promising Dutch start-ups in their international exposure and network. The mission includes 20 Dutch regular start-ups and 2 start-ups per Dutch technical university. This seemed to us as a perfect opportunity to bring together local alumni in Paris, the RVO and part of the Dutch start-up community for a networking event.

👨‍🏫 The digital transformation typically removes historic barriers, improves scalability, empowers the end-user, and make the respective sector more flexible. It now finally also hits the energy sector. The question is: what can it improve there? How can physical constraints be overcome? How can it facilitate decarbonization? How do Bits and kWh come together? And what are the strings attached to it?
