TU Delft Faculty of Architecture has been hosting Dr Deborah Lefosse as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow since November 2021. Thanks to this prestigious EU grant under H2020 Programme, she has the opportunity to do almost three years’ research within TU Delft Urbanism Department ‘Environmental Technology & Design’ section and MIT Senseable City Lab. In cooperation with AMS Institute, Future Cities Lab Singapore-ETH Centre and other international partners, she is working on BIO-POLIS (BIOphilic MetroPOLIS, a holistic model for urban planning and building climate resilience) project, which is a comparative urban study on interactions between human beings, nature and the city through the notion of ‘biophilia’. What is a Biophilic City? How can Nature improve the quality of our lives and help cities to address climate change at once? These are just a few of the research questions she will try to answer over the coming months while receiving training and supervision to enhance her skills and to become an independent scientist.

Student work Stad × Ruimte: Cross-section thinking

The underground is given more space in the design of the built environment. The Flemish-Dutch design study Stad × Ruimte collaborated with the interdisciplinary master design studio Architecture & Urban Design by having students emphasize the cross-section during the design process. The student work, that explores the opportunities of building and living underground in Amsterdam and beyond, can be seen in an exhibition together with the work of the professional design teams.

Together with professionals

The views of the students are diverse, with the exploration of the subsurface as common denominator. However, this background is not the main topic for every case. In line with the background of the design studio, the students are also looking for solutions that fit the cities in other areas. Topics relating to densification, mobility, social encounters, and the energy transition therefore also play an important role in the development of the plans.

The students, with Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Architecture backgrounds, followed the entire program of the design study Stad × Ruimte, drawn up by the cities of Leuven, Mechelen, Ostend, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Maastricht. The results of the students can be seen in the exhibition Sub terra - New roots for underground urbanism in Arcam, Amsterdam -.

On Tuesday, October 5th from 16-17.30hrs. the Urban Design section hosts the second edition of the Metropolitan Club debate on “Tools and instruments for the new urban project and the role of digitalization”. We hope you will join us again in this round table discussion hosted by Paul Gerretsen of the Vereniging Deltametropool featuring four speakers:
- Albena Yaneva, Professor of Architectural theory at the University of Manchester
- Sarah Williams, associate professor of technology and urban planning at MIT (to be confirmed)
- Anne Loes Nillesen, founding director of Defacto Urbanism, Rotterdam
- Arnout Sabbe and Rusnė Šilerytė, co-founders of geoFluxus

Following the line or argument set out in the first Metropolitan Club debate and drawing on the work of the section, we have asked our speakers to reflect on the following three questions:

-Why does our society require more intense and better informed design decisions?
-Which are the tools and instruments urban designers need to master in order to deliver this?
-How can academia and practice help each other and what are the implications for education?

The Metropolitan Club is an event series hosted by the Section of Urban Design at TU Delft, in which students, professionals, experts, and educators come together to re-examine some of the fundamentals of our profession and engage with Dutch practice. This year we dedicate a series of three events to debate on upcoming urban challenges and the role of design within them.

The first Metropolitan Club debate in June focused on “Challenges that define the new urban project,” (speakers Daan Zandbelt, Kate Unsworth, Henk Ovink, Like Bijlsma, moderation by Paul Gerretsen: https://youtu.be/A_k_baE2JR4). In December, we plan to organise a third edition on the changing role of the urban designer in practice and society.

"All is in Formation: Architecture, Cybernetics, Ecology".

You can find the issue online;

Footprint #28 examines the relation between cybernetics and architecture by focusing on a problem they both share: the production, consumption and flow of information, or, in other terms, of meaning. Therefore, cyberneticisation can set the foundations for a relational account that examines how sign...
