The United Nations Development Programme - UNDP has partnered with TU Delft, creating an historic Dutch-Brazilian research cooperation. "Never before have experts from science, society and policy in Brazil and the Netherlands worked together on climate resilience with such urgency," says researcher Taneha Kuzniecow Bacchin.

Bacchin, Associate Professor of Urban Design at our faculty, is currently in Brazil for the local kick-off of the UNDP project. It focuses on the islands of the city of Porto Alegre in the southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul. The project starts there due to the extreme floods that hit the region in May 2024: among the largest natural disasters of the 21st century.

The UNDP project is part of a pre-existing collaboration between TU Delft and the University of São Paulo under the banner of Resilient Delta.

PhD candidate Chi Jin grew up in a small town in China. Like many young professionals, she moved to Shenzhen for her first job, where financial constraints left her to settle for a low-quality apartment.

During this time Chi noticed that young talent continued to flood into major cities despite their high housing costs. This observation stuck with her, leading eventually to a research project with a particularly personal topic: studying the and housing behaviours of newcomers like her past self.

refers to the ‘innate connection humans feel with other forms of life’. Studies highlight how contact with can benefit our , society, environment, and economy. But to what extent? Which natural elements do we value most? And does this vary by ? Dr. Deborah Lefosse was the principle investigator in a team including researchers from AMS Institute and MIT Senseable City Lab. Their paper, Feeling Nature, recently appeared in Nature Partner Journals.

“The COVID-19 pandemic was a wake-up call to the fact that ventilation in classrooms leaves a lot to be desired,” says Ding, PhD candidate at our faculty.

Two years ago, she was involved in a field study investigating the spread of the SARS-Cov-2 virus and indoor environmental conditions in . During this study, and thermal conditions were found to be unsatisfactory. Her PhD research involved an investigation to answer the question: can we improve the situation using mobile air cleaners?

As cities grow denser and more complex, the demand for precise and efficient models is increasing. But how can they be created quickly and accurately?

Jin Huang’s PhD explored methods to enhance the reliability and of 3D city modelling. For example, the use of symmetry as a prior constraint, or incorporating sketches of missing features. “I’ve already had many messages from researchers who want to use my method.”

During this year’s Brain Awareness Week, we are sharing the story of Feras Alsaggaf and his thesis project on how AI can help in designing dementia-friendly living spaces.

Feras did an internship earlier in his studies with a firm designing healthcare environments. He learned about many design considerations, but something was missing. “We call it the ‘soft side’ of design: factors like satisfaction and well-being. Difficult to quantify, but vital to consider.”

For his master’s thesis, Feras chose to use sightlines in his model. “Sightlines give residents choice: to explore and move freely, to engage with people or seek rest.” But he envisions how a complete version of his model could analyse more than 50 factors which play a role in the well-being of patients.

The Living Data Conference was held from 12 to 14 February 2025 at our faculty and the Nieuwe Instituut. The explored the topic of as a design material and how innovative concepts in data visualisation can inspire .

Invited speakers, whose backgrounds included urban forestry, media and communications, urban technology, and computer science, highlighted emerging ways that data informs design while prioritising diversity, empathy, and human relationship.

The Living Data Conference was a first step in exploring innovative data methods for architects to create designs that are contextually relevant, diverse, and responsive. The ultimate goal being to ensure living environments that effectively address climate risks.

Resident in neighbourhood rehabilitations is common practice in the Netherlands, while in China it is still in its infancy. Is a more efficient approach possible in emerging participation projects in the People's Republic, PhD candidate Yu Li wondered?

Sure, and the Covid-19 pandemic is indirectly lending a hand, she discovered in Wuhan. “Neighbourhood committees gained more power and are taking the lead.” An important condition is that they get enough money for rapid and effective setup of participation.

'Jaap Oosterhoff Visiting Prof’ programme launches at BK with Carlo Ratti

The programme, organised together with the faculty department of Architecture, Engineering and Technology and financed by Quake, will bring together top specialists and generalists to tackle complex architectural challenges, fostering and . Several years, a different prominent guest will contribute to the curriculum and deliver a public lecture, enriching the learning experience for students and faculty alike.

Carlo Ratti is the first guest in this Visiting Prof Programme. Ratti is a professor at MIT, director of the MIT Senseable City Lab and Principal Investigator at AMS Institute. He is also founder of the international and innovation office CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati.

Ratti explores how new technologies are changing the way we understand cities, design them and we ultimately live in them. Ratti's work deals with the built environment of cities, from the new road landscape with new mobility systems, to new paradigms of waste collection and energy systems. Using big data and AI techniques, Ratti explores how we can better understand and design cities. Other projects reverse this equation and use data from sensors to create brilliant new environments.

Brook Teklehaimanot Haileselassie grew up in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia and a rapidly evolving city. Many neighbourhoods were constructed by residents with little professional aid. Meanwhile, the government’s large-scale housing projects often uproot and disrupt existing hashtag .

During his PhD, Brook investigated the culture of ‘home’ in both hashtag types. “To inform architects about residents’ perspectives; to give academics insight in how to teach architecture; and to guide governments towards more equitable housing policy.”

During the first weeks of 2025, students in the minor 'Archineering' designed and built a real-size mobile workshop in The Green Village. This diverse group from multiple universities transformed ideas into practical, bio-based construction. Eva ten Velden, course instructor: “We want students to create hands-on with the material, gaining both academic and practical knowledge while working toward sustainable solutions.”

BK: Bouwkunde

The faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment (Bouwkunde) at TU Delft has a leading role in education and research worldwide. Since 1904, researchers and students have been working on improving the built environment with the help of a broad set of disciplines, including architectural design, city planning, building technology, social sciences, process management, and geo-information science. The driving force behind the faculty’s success is its robust research profile combined with the passion and creativity of its student body and academic community. Bouwkunde (BK) works closely with other universities, private parties, and the public sector, and has an extensive network in the Netherlands as well as internationally.
