Two conversations on the tools of making — language and sound.

What Words Do to Design: Naming the Process
Dr. Tzlil Sharon, researcher at the Social Innovation Lab, with DAE Graduates Sergio Pinilla López, Elena Nechaeva, Charlotte Meinicke, Sandra Saffira Desitasari, Sheyang Li and Inès Sarazin. Words do more than describe design — they direct attention, shape meaning and influence what a project can become. Through the Design Research Framework, we explore how naming an approach reveals decisions and possibilities in practice.

On 24 October, art, design, technology and cosmology come together during The Universe is Bigger Than... at the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven.

From 11:00 to 18:00, visitors can explore Side Quest in the museum’s classroom: a one-day presentation by students from the MA Contextual Design programme at Design Academy Eindhoven, together with curator and educator Maia Kenney ().

Side Quest offers a glimpse into the research process behind an upcoming tabletop game by Ayoung Kim.

Inspired by Ayoung Kim’s exhibition Delivery Dancer: Time Curves, the students explore how technology, labour, infrastructure and different experiences of time shape the world around us.

Although the conference is now sold out, you are warmly invited to visit Side Quest. The presentation is free to visit throughout the day on 24 October in the Van Abbemuseum classroom, with no conference or museum ticket required.

The graduation Show runs through the whole building, every corner holds work worth finding.
Wander beyond the main route, and you’ll discover projects tucked into corners and stairwells, including the Bookshop- not a conventional shop, but part of the Show itself. Here, graduation projects sit alongside publications and interactive works: things you can handle, read, and take part in.
Spend time with a material or a history, join a work in progress, or bring your own position into the conversation.

This Saturday afternoon, graduates activate their projects live in the space — presenting their work, answering questions and showing you what’s behind it!

The winners of the 2026 DAE Awards!
During the Graduation Show Opening this year’s Gijs Bakker, René Smeets and Melkweg Award winners were revealed: Raghad Saqfalhait, Athanasios Paspaliaris and Louella Exton. Each received €2,000 and a trophy designed by alumna Clara Schweers, produced with MAKE Eindhoven.

Winner of the Gijs Bakker Award 2026 Raghad Saqfalhait (Geo–Design) with ‘ The Dead Are Never Inert رماد مسكون’

The project examines ash particles in Palestinian soil samples and the stories they hold. Through a performance and a film, the project proposes a decolonial archaeology that traces openings to worlds that were — and could be. The jury highlighted how it does political work through material practice, without hierarchies between ways of knowing.

Winner of the Melkweg Award 2026: Louella Exton with ‘Tracing Hot Particles: A Matter of Time’.

An installation of warning signs that challenges the idea that nuclear technology can be contained — collecting hidden traces of radioactivity through experimental weather modelling. The jury was impressed by how it brings together scientific sensing, indigenous knowledge and material sensitivity.

Winner of the René Smeets Award 2026: Athanasios Paspaliaris with ‘Unskilled Worker’.
Filmed encounters recorded while helping people move foreground the lives that are often unseen in the design world. The jury praised how Athanasios turns his role from an anonymous cog in the logistic machine into that of someone who is empathetic towards the people he interacts with — an attitude which system designers should learn to adopt.

A day of conversations about making things visible, sustainable and shared. Live from the Radio Cart, Zoé Bruhat talks radio with Operator and Rararadio — on making an online stream physically present and opening the airwaves to new voices. In Seeds of Change, Graduates and Educational staff sit together around the tension between working under pressure and answering the climate emergency — what do time, budget and material limits ask of sustainable, educational environments? And in Gardening, the Lecture Series Initiative digs into landscapes, design practices and the cultivation of ideas.
Three conversations, one question: how do we make things grow? Come listen, come question.
