Met het project Rock Your Baby is vandaag in Eindhoven een bijzondere samenwerking tussen Fontys Hogeschool en de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) gestart. Voor het eerst in Nederland volgen eerstejaarsstudenten Elektrotechniek van een hogeschool en een universiteit samen hetzelfde vak in het eerste semester.

Vanaf de eerste week van hun studie werken de 370 studenten in 42 gemengde teams aan de praktijkgerichte uitdaging: hoe kan een baby in een maxicosi rustig worden én blijven? Ze ontwikkelen slimme oplossingen die, met behulp van metingen van hartslag en geluid, automatisch een passende schommelbeweging aansturen om baby’s in een stoeltje te helpen ontspannen. Een unieke samenwerking die technisch talent versterkt en bijdraagt aan de toekomst van de Brainportregio.

Today in Eindhoven, the Rock Your Baby project marks the start of a unique collaboration between Fontys University of Applied Sciences and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). For the first time in the Netherlands, first-year Electrical Engineering students from a university of applied sciences and a research university are taking the same course together during their first semester.

From the very first week of their studies, the students work in 42 mixed teams on a hands-on challenge: how can we help a baby settle down and stay calm in a car seat? They develop smart solutions that use heart rate and sound measurements to automatically control an appropriate rocking motion, helping babies relax in their seats.

A unique collaboration that strengthens technical talent and contributes to the future of the Brainport region.

🎸Een gitaar met een klankkast van hout, aluminium en plexiglas. Vier studenten van Fontys Hogeschool en Avans Hogeschool ontwikkelden een nieuw instrument in opdracht van componist, gitarist en instrumentenmaker Aart Strootman (docent en onderzoeker bij Fontys Academy of the Arts) onder begeleiding van Iman Koole (docent Elektrotechniek bij Fontys Technology).”

De Tone-Mixing-Guitar combineert verschillende materialen en technologieën om nieuwe klankmogelijkheden te creëren. De gitaar is het eerste instrument dat speciaal ontwikkeld is voor het Future Orchestra. Een orkest waarin instrumenten door de toevoeging van technologie anders of zelfs beter klinken. 🎸A guitar with a soundbox made of wood, aluminium and plexiglass. Four students from Fontys University of Applied Sciences and Avans University of Applied Sciences developed a new instrument commissioned by composer, guitarist and instrument maker Aart Strootman (lecturer and researcher at Fontys Academy of the Arts), under the guidance of Iman Koole (Electrical Engineering lecturer at Fontys Technology).

The Tone-Mixing-Guitar combines different materials and technologies to create new sonic possibilities. It is the first instrument specifically developed for the Future Orchestra: an orchestra in which technology is used to make instruments sound different or even better.

And this is the end of the University Racing Eindhoven Formula Student Germany and takeover! and we would like to thank you all for following it🙏🏻

The team managed to perform to a very high standard, with finishes in all events and competitive times throughout🧡🔥

URE ranked 20th in the overall event out of 80 teams, and 8th in the Driverless Cup out of 39 teams. This is a result that we can be proud of, considering the fierce competition alongside us on track

Start jij in september met een technische studie bij Fontys en verwacht je dat wiskunde een uitdaging wordt? Of heb je al een tijdje geen wiskunde meer gehad en wil je je kennis weer opfrissen? Neem dan deel aan de opfriscursus wiskunde.

Tijdens deze cursus fris je belangrijke wiskundige basisvaardigheden op, zodat je met meer vertrouwen aan je opleiding start. De cursus is bedoeld voor studenten die starten met een studie: Applied Science, Automotive, Elektrotechniek, Mechatronica, Technische Bedrijfskunde, Technische Natuurkunde, Toegepaste Wiskunde of Werktuigbouwkunde.

Komend studiejaar studeren de eerste masterstudenten van Applied Quantum Technology af en zijn ze direct inzetbaar in de hightechindustrie. Tijdens de master Applied Quantum Technology, die je kunt volgen na het behalen van je bachelordiploma, leer je hoe je quantumsoftware, fotonica en elektronica inzet om problemen op te lossen die met klassieke technologie lastig of niet oplosbaar zijn.

Docent Lotte Spanjers: “We zijn met deze joint degree-masterstudie, die in samenwerking met vier Nederlandse hogescholen is ontwikkeld, in het g*t gesprongen dat ontstaan is tussen de klassieke engineeringtechnieken en de kwantumtechnologie.”

“Omdat deze techniek zich zo aan de rand van onze kennis bevindt en alles nog zo nieuw en spectaculair is, maar tegelijkertijd onzeker en uitdagend, hebben we bij de ontwikkeling van de master steeds nauw contact gezocht met bedrijven. De kennis die mist in het werkveld, bieden wij onze masterstudenten aan.”

The first cohort of students in the Master's programme in Applied Quantum Technology will graduate in the upcoming academic year, ready to make an immediate impact in the high-tech industry. This master's programme, which you can pursue after earning your bachelor's degree, teaches you how to apply quantum software, photonics, and electronics to solve problems that are difficult or even impossible, to address using classical technologies.

Het studiejaar is bijna voorbij en daarom hebben we onze studentambassadeurs bedankt met een lekker stukje taart! Nogmaals super bedankt voor jullie enthousiaste inzet, betrokkenheid en waardevolle bijdrage gedurende het afgelopen jaar.

Dankzij jullie hebben veel toekomstige studenten een goed beeld gekregen van onze opleidingen en onderwijsinstelling. Of het nu ging om challenges, proefstudeerdagen, meeloopdagen, evenementen, (online)voorlichtingen: jullie inzet heeft echt het verschil gemaakt. En daar zijn we ontzettend blij mee en trots op.

🎓 Student Talk | Ard

"This is something genuinely new. You're not applying existing tools, you're exploring a technology that doesn't fully exist yet."

When I found the Quantum Safe Cryptography minor, I knew it was different. I'm an ICT student, and before starting I had no background in cryptography or quantum mechanics. I wasn't even sure what quantum computing really was.

The minor starts from the basics, so you don't need prior knowledge. We first explored classical cryptography before moving into quantum computing and programming. The mathematics was more challenging than I expected, but that also made it one of the most rewarding parts. It pushed me to think differently and solve problems you can't simply Google.

What made this minor stand out was working with students from different backgrounds. Some understood quantum mechanics, others had strong programming skills. We all depended on each other, and that made the teamwork incredibly valuable.

This experience didn't change my career path, I'm still focused on ICT, but it completely changed the way I think about cybersecurity and encryption.

"I genuinely feel like I learned more here than in any other minor."

Mart, Mike, Stan, Thyne en Jules, zijn vijf derdejaars studenten Automotive, die al sinds dag één bij elkaar in de klas zitten. Zoals ze zelf zeggen: ‘‘Vrienden sinds het eerste jaar’’. Nu delen ze een gezamenlijk minorproject. Samen bedachten, ontwierpen, bouwden en testten ze de Trak-e. Een volledig elektrische kart op rupsbanden.

Voor de minor, die zowel in september als februari start, kunnen zich telkens 35 studenten aanmelden. In week één krijg je een opdracht. Dat was dit keer: bouw een elektrisch voertuig om te tonen op TechBeach (Hét evenement waar techniek tot leven komt) van MasterMilo. Ze gingen vlot aan de slag met brainstormen en kwamen snel op het idee voor een offroadvoertuig.

Thyne: ‘‘Daarbij kon een fun element niet ontbreken. Rupsbanden leken ons wel vet. Daarna konden we aan de slag. We moesten alles zelf regelen. De enige voorwaarde die we kregen, was dat het makkelijk te vervoeren was, zodat we het voertuig mee naar TechBeach konden nemen.’’

Mart, Mike, Stan, Thyne, and Jules are five third-year Automotive students who have been in the same class since day one. As they put it themselves: “Friends since the first year.” Now, they are working together on a shared minor project. Together, they came up with the idea, designed, built, and tested the Trak-e: a fully electric tracked kart.

For the minor programme, which starts in both September and February, 35 students can enroll each semester. In the very first week, students receive an assignment. This time, the challenge was to build an electric vehicle to showcase at TechBeach, MasterMilo’s event where technology truly comes to life.

The team quickly got to work brainstorming and soon came up with the idea of creating an off-road vehicle.

Thyne: “We knew it had to include a fun element. Tracks seemed really cool to us, so we went with that idea. From there, we got to work. We had to organize everything ourselves. The only requirement was that the vehicle had to be easy to transport, so we could take it with us to TechBeach.”
