Where did student life in Eindhoven begin? 🎓

Jan Blom takes us back to the 1960s, when the Eindhoven Student Corps (ESC), the very first student association in Eindhoven, took shape. In this portrait, the former student looks back on his college years, the emergence of Eindhoven as a college town, and his special connection to the university. A personal story about the early days of student life and the growth of TU/e.

Behind some campus doors, history has been waiting for decades. ☢️

For this special occasion, doors that have been closed for years are being reopened. Radiation specialist Gilles Moerdijk takes us on a tour of two unique research facilities on campus: the former ATHENE nuclear reactor and the Cyclotron. 🔬

He explains why the reactor was shut down 50 years ago, and how the Cyclotron plays a role in medical applications that help patients every day. A piece of TU/e history that remains unknown to many.

"Sorry, not tonight." That's what John Tacken told a couple of unknown Americans at the door of the Bunker (AOR). In hindsight, they turned out to be the Red Hot Chili Peppers. 🎸

Long before the Bunker became a residential tower, it was the place where Eindhoven students gathered to party, eat, socialize, and hang out late into the night. John, a former student and former bouncer, takes us back to this iconic spot right next to the TU/e campus.

Where does a university keep its memory? 🗂️

For TU/e, a big part of the answer is Erik Geelen. As a specialist in academic heritage, he knows better than anyone what thousands of photos, albums, and documents reveal about TU/e over seven decades. In this profile, Cindy de Koning and Alfons Bruekers join him in the archives, where extraordinary stories and forgotten images are stored. 📸

Lustrum Week afternoon talks: Cheers to Science, where music and science come together. 🎶

Next week, during our Lustrum Week, we invite you to wrap up your day with Cheers to Science: two afternoon sessions in the Spiegeltent on the Flux field, where our researchers take the stage with music, stories, and big questions.

When?
🎸 Wednesday 14 October: (Algo)Rhythm & Blues
Bart M. P. Jansen and Ruud van Sloun swap their research for a stage, using blues music to take you through the world of algorithms and AI. In English.

🎤 Thursday 15 October: Lost my way (De draad kwijt)
Philosopher of technology Caroline Bollen explores how technology and AI shape our relationships and our future in a musical performance. In Dutch, with lyrics on screen.

Performance 16:45 to 17:30, tent and bar open 16:30 to 18:00

A new academic year also marks a new cohort at the Eindhoven Young Academy of Engineering 🆕🥳!

This year, the EYAE is proud to welcome nine new members. Ahmed Dorrah, Alessandra Galli, Cian Scannell, Claire Bourquard, Elisa Perrone, Jemima Tabeart, Marta Gil Pérez, Rianne Conijn, and Shauna O'Donovan will join 18 existing members representing TU/e across departments. Together, they are eager to tackle new challenges in the upcoming academic year.

Important topics include the sustainability of their financial model and overhead costs, transparent processes for future governance development, effective implementation of the institutional plan and Project Beethoven (and its effect on departments that are not part of the project), the development of a lean-and-mean approach to employee assessment, and policy regarding defense and resilience-oriented research.

The academy will moreover start a collaboration with Tilburg University in the form of small-scale synergy grants to bridge disciplines and build impact.

✨ This was MomenTUm 2026; the academic celebration of the year! 🎓

Across three ceremonies, we honored more than 1.500 graduates, applauded the Best Teachers 2026, and celebrated outstanding research with the Academic and Audience Awards.

From walking the Walk of Fame to the traditional cap toss, it was an unforgettable day for our entire TU/e community.

As part of our Lustrum Week celebrating 70 years of TU/e, we're hosting Curiosity Bites: a week of inspiring lunchtime science talks in our Curiosity Connects Mirror Tent.

From Monday 12 to Friday 16 October, TU/e scientists take the stage each day to share their research in a passionate, down-to-earth way, hosted by one of our science communicators, with plenty of room for audience questions.

Grab a bite from the food court, take a seat, and enjoy your lunch with a stimulating dose of science. 🎙️
