A painting can be centuries old. But paint? Paint is alive; it cracks, fades, and changes over time.

In her lab at TU/e, researcher Emanuela Bosco studies exactly how and why this happens. By understanding the behavior of materials like paint at a fundamental level, her research contributes to better preservation of the world's cultural heritage. See her work in action in the latest episode of Stay TU/ened! 👇

What happens when an entire university comes together around one shared value: curiosity? 🔬 Join TU/e Research Day!

On June 23, our academic community comes together to celebrate research, innovation, and collaboration under the theme Curiosity Connects.

✨ What to expect:
The program starts with a focus on academic careers, including a new networking session for early-career researchers and a Career Forum featuring Prof. Christian Borgs. This is followed by the Innovation Expo, where TU/e groups, partners, and companies present their work.

🎓 The highlight of the day is the awarding of an honorary doctorate to Prof. Christian Borgs, followed by the TU/e Awards, celebrating outstanding research achievements.

We are proud to launch TU/e’s new leadership model and program, designed for everyone across our university.

Central to the program is that leadership is not defined by position, but by behavior: how we collaborate, support each other, and take shared responsibility for our goals.

As TU/e President Koen Janssen puts it: “It takes a real change in mindset to admit you don’t have all the answers and to ask others to step in and help.”

The program has been developed with contributions from across the university, including HRM Director Nicole Bueters, ambassador Kees Storm, and program manager Lonneke van Luxemburg.

Want to know more about what this means in practice? Read the full interview with Koen Janssen, Kees Storm, Nicole Bueters, and Lonneke van Luxemburg.

Art at a technical university? More than you'd expect! 🖼️

Episode 9 of Stay TU/ened is live! In this episode, we explore the surprising world of art at TU/e.

Our art conservator, Britte Sloothaak, reveals our impressive post-war art collection; researcher Emanuela Bosco takes us into the science behind paint; and we hear the story of an artwork nobody wanted that became our most valuable piece. Plus: the Art Lending Service, Aero Team Eindhoven, and a Beethoven renovation update.

🎯 How do you attract more talented scientists in an increasingly competitive international market? It takes much more than simply opening vacancies. It requires a joined-up approach, strong collaboration, and a great deal of attention to finding the right match.

That's exactly what Niels Deen (ME) and Josje van Oudenaarden (HRM) have done for the growth ambitions of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as part of the Beethoven program. They launched a large-scale international recruitment campaign to fill eight new assistant professor positions. The response was overwhelming: more than 1,200 applications from around the world.

But attracting talent is only part of the challenge. Selecting the right people matters just as much. It's about connecting scientists to the right team, research environment, and culture, and making sure new colleagues can truly thrive here, both professionally and personally.

Their story offers a behind-the-scenes look at the care, collaboration, and dedication required to build strong academic teams for the future.

3 professors ready to ride, a lot of spots to fill. Who's joining? 🚴‍♂️🎓

On June 23rd, TU/e kicks off its 70th anniversary lustrum year in style. We want to ask all professors, associate professors, and assistant professors to get in their academic gowns, hop on their bikes, and cycle through Eindhoven to deliver inspiring mini-lectures at local schools.

Afterward, join the ceremonial academic procession (cortège) from the city center to campus to mark the official kick-off.

👉 Are you a TU/e professor ready to pedal for science? Sign up now via this link: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=R_J9zM5gD0qddXBM9g78ZM1BQPH8yrlNpckyGpZx-VZUMEdITlFPN1JVNTdHSERNQzlOVDc3TzZITy4u&origin=lprLink&route=shorturl

Other universities got 40–50 participants. For our 70th, we're aiming for at least 70. Help us get there!

What does it take to run a successful European research project? More than great science alone.

Meet Henk Huinink and Bárbara Malheiros. Henk is the PI and researcher, Bárbara the project manager. Together, they lead the EIC Pathfinder project 4TunaTES, which focuses on developing flexible solutions for long-term energy storage.

Their secret? A clear division of roles. By sharing responsibilities, Henk can focus on the research itself while Bárbara keeps everything running smoothly. It sounds simple, but it makes all the difference when coordinating a European consortium.

Want to know more about how they work together and what 4TunaTES is all about? Read the full story here:

What if you could conduct atoms like an orchestra?

That’s exactly what experimental physicist Rianne Lous is doing. In her self-built quantum simulator, she makes quantum physics tangible. Not abstract theory, but something you can actually experiment with.

In her lab in Qubit, she and her colleagues are exploring how atoms interact as the building blocks of our world. “I want to be able to control atoms,” she says. And that starts with curiosity: playing, exploring, and figuring out why things work the way they do.

Her research is still at an early stage, opening up a new direction in the field. But that’s what makes it exciting. Step by step, building knowledge that could one day contribute to quantum computers and advanced sensors.

A nice reminder of the kind of curiosity-driven research happening right here on our campus.

First conduct the atoms. The rest will follow.
