Audre Project Netherlands De ervaringen en behoeften van LHBTQIA+ jeugdigen in de jeugdhulp // The experiences of LGBTQIA+ youth in out-of-home care. Why is Audre important? www.FWOS.nl

Audre project starts at the University of Groningen (October 2017) to understand the experiences of LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual) youth and young adults with their time in out-of-home care. In addition, Audre focuses on the perceptions of carers (such as group care workers and foster carers) who are responsible for the wellbeing of young people while in

care. The final goal of Audre is to gain further insight on how to create a safe and supportive child protection and welfare context, in which youth feel accepted and are equipped to express their (gender) identity. Audre project addresses the following research questions:

How do or did LGBTQIA youth and young adults experience their out-of-home placement during their childhood? What are carers’ stereotypes, attitudes, norms and values regarding LGBTQIA? LGBTQIA youth in the child protection and welfare system may experience several disadvantages during their childhood. For them, stressors (e.g., discrimination, stigma, lack of tailored services) may add up to the experiences of being placed in out-of- home care. Therefore, it is important to create a stimulating, non-discriminatory context, where there is room for the young person’s sexual orientation and gender identity and which takes into account their social context and own strategies of resilience. Research on how to create a safe and supportive context for LGBTQIA youth in out-of-home care and how to enhance the skills of carers working with them is therefore of utmost importance. How does Audre work? Expert group
Audre includes LGBTQIA youth and young adults throughout various stages of the research project. They will contribute to the design and delivery of the research project with a role of advisor and co-researcher. The group will meet at crucial moments of the project, such as the development of the research tools, the interpretation and dissemination of the findings. Interviews
Audre seeks to get in touch with LGBTQIA youth and young adults who are or have been in foster care or residential care and who are willing to share their story with us. Are you interested in talking about your own experiences in care? How was it for you? What would you like to change? If you want to participate in this interview, we will meet you at your preferred location or chat with you via phone, messenger, or Skype. We will treat your story with confidentiality and respect, and it will be used to help highlight the voices of LGBTQIA youth and young adults in care. Focus groups
Audre includes focus-groups with carers, such as group care workers or foster carers. We will discuss with them their experiences, opinions, needs and expertise regarding LGBTQIA youth. Who is behind Audre? The research team is made up of the following members: Mónica López López, Mijntje ten Brummelaar, Hans Grietens, Elianne Zijlstra, Charly Jazbor and Shanice Karangwa. The project is based at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences of the University of Groningen:

We have written a blog post on the adversities and resilience of LGBTQIA+ young people in care. This short piece is based on interviews with young people in care in the Netherlands, on their stories of struggles and resilience. 🌈

Let’s get things straight. Nowadays, in almost all regions of the world, society discriminates against individuals who don’t fit into the imposed sexuality norms. Individuals who identify as Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Q***r, Intersex, Asexual/Aromantic/Agender and other sexualities and...

NEW Book from Audre project!🤩

"Working with LGBTQIA+ youth in the child welfare system: Perspectives from youth and professionals"

Written through a constant exchange between LGBTQIA+ young people, researchers, professionals, and foster families, this book offers a valuable tool to improve the practice with LGBTQIA+ youth at personal, organizational, and policy levels. This book shows the powerful influence of relationships and networks for the LGBTQIA+ young person growing up in child protection and welfare systems. LGBTQIA+ youth need meaningful connections with individuals within their communities in order to be able to heal, learn, and be authentically themselves. Child welfare professionals have a crucial role in creating these connections and cultivating supportive environments, free of additional trauma, where LGBTQIA+ young people can feel valued and loved.

This book, published in Open Access (completely free), will be launched on the 19th of November at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. The launching event will be hosted by experts by experience and will include short research presentations, readings, poetry, and art. If you would like to attend, reach out to [email protected]

Our very first scientific publication!

We explored the many ways in which LGBTQIA+ youth in out-of-home care in the Netherlands experienced resilience 🌈 💪🏽

Thanks to everyone involved in the Audre study :)

Summary:

LGBTQIA+ youth in the child protection system (CPS) continue experiencing challenges due to care systems that are often unaccepting of their Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression. These adversities are well known, but what about their resilience?

Going beyond classic conceptualizations of resilience as an individual characteristic, we used a comprehensive and multidimensional resilience approach. Resilience is the process of overcoming adversity by navigating psychological, interpersonal, and systemic resources.

LGBTQIA+ youth in care experienced resilience by 1) relationships that support and empower, 2) construction of a positive identity around their sexual orientation and gender identity, 3) community involvement and 4) self-relying strategies.

On the 11th October, we celebrate the Coming-Out Day!🏳️‍🌈😄

It`s the day on which we celebrate that everyone can be open about who we are. In the Netherlands we have been celebrating Coming-Out Day since 2009, in the United States, it has been celebrated since 1988.

Traditionally, on October 11 the rainbow flag goes high in many places in the flagpole and all kinds of activities are organised around the house.

The GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance) is giving rainbow flags for free for this celebration, order yours on their website:

The 10th International Foster Care Research Network Conference ZHAW just took place in Zurich, Switzerland. The topic of this year was ¨Foster care and diversity- How does diversity affect foster care in research and practice?

Audre project could not be missing! Audre has started working with all the precious and important knowledge gained from all those interviews that we are so grateful we could conduct. Thus we have some preliminary results that we had to communicate.

Rodrigo Gonzalez Alvarez, our new PhD student, attended the conference in order to represent the Audre team and to talk about the LGBTQIA+ children and youth in the child protection system. He also addressed the first ideas for the new phase of the Audre project.

His participation was well received by the attendees and a fruitful and engaging discussion took place. The issues that LGBTQIA+ children and youth face in the child protection system are ubiquitous and relevant in many countries. We are sure that his presentation contributed to enrich the conference with its grain of diversity in the diversity theme.

The AUDRE team has a new member!

Rodrigo Gonzalez Alvarez, our new PhD student at the University of Groningen 🤓. He completed a bachelor in psychology in the megalopolis Mexico City where he grew up. After his bachelor, he moved to the small and beautiful Groningen to study a research master.

Now, he is starting his PhD studies at the Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences (FBSS), where he will be part of the Audre research team. His personal goals align with Audre´s goals; to learn from the LGBTQIA+ children and youth in out-of-home care, their views, needs and strengths in order to promote the creation of a safe and welcoming environment for them. He is also eager to learn from their carers and to analyze the child protection system to gain insight into the best way to achieve this goal.

Rodrigo is full of enthusiasm to join the Audre team; to learn from all the amazing work already done and to plan and work in the project of a new beautiful and colourful next phase for Audre.

¨I am very happy to join such a warm and welcoming Audre family 😄. I am excited to start this knowledge trip with all of you and give the best of me to this study and society. I am part of the LGBTQIA+ 🏳️‍🌈 community, therefore I acknowledge and accept the way my personal history relates to my research¨

I do research because I strongly believe in our responsibility to fight for social justice. I research to give voice…….

¨To that piece in each of us that refuses to be silent¨, Audre Lorde
.........

Dear all,

The last two weeks have been incredibly busy but super inspiring for the Audre Team. Below we will give you a brief recap of the past activities. Attached you can find some nice pictures from the past days.

✨29th of May and 5th of June✨
NHL guest lecture by Audre Team at NHL Leeuwarden. Bjorn and Kevin spoke about the Audre project, and of course LGBTQIA+ in care, to second year pedagogic students. The lecture went well and the students were eager to learn more about the topic.

✨5th of June✨
Launch of LGBTQIA+ research groups at the Behavioural and Social Sciences faculty of the University of Groningen. Kevin, Natalia and Samar presented the Audre Project to fellow researchers and future researchers. Others also shared their interesting work with the group.

✨6th and 7th of June✨
Conference “Growing Together: Celebrating Diversity and Fostering Inclusion”. This conference was part of the 405 years Lustrum of the University of Groningen and was organized by Mónica and her Dream Team (Geetha and Manu) amongst others. Over the course of two days’ important professors like Kimberlé Crenshaw, Philomena Essed, Glenn Adams, Jonathan Jansen, Shose Kessi, Dr. Saran Stewart and Sonya Renee Taylor and more addressed the theme. All, in their own way, stressed the empty meaning of inclusion and diversity when it is not placed into context. Each of them gave us not only something to think about also tools to create a more inclusive academia.

✨8th of June✨
Night of Art and Science panel and podcast. During this event, the African Students Community hosted a panel in which several researchers spoke about their work in academia. The panel was led by Samar. Natalia represented the Audre Project and spoke about the participatory and intersectional approach of the Audre project. The other two researchers, M.D. Sabine Fonderson and master student Januschka Schmidt, shared their inclusive methods and how they give back to their researched communities.

All the best,
Audre Team

Beste allemaal,

Conferentie “Growing Together: Celebrating Diversity and Fostering Inclusion”. In twee dagen hebben belangrijke professors zoals o.a.

Vriendelijkste groeten,

Dear all,

The Audre team has received a very nice and interesting invitation from the NHL university of applied science. They have invited us to a give a guest lecture to first year pedagogic students at the end of this month. The lecture is on LGBTQIA+ and working in care. At the moment, we are working on which topics to discuss and we would love to get some input from you. What do you think is important for us to discuss with the students? Do you have any suggestions for resources we should look at while preparing for the lecture?

We really appreciate your help and input!
Thank you so much!

All the best,
Audre Team

Beste allemaal,

We waarderen jullie hulp enorm!
Hartelijk dank!
