TIME TO TALK ABOUT:

If you are a teacher for smaller groups, you know it can be hard sometimes to engage your students and facilitate learning. Have you ever heard of a technique called "Flipping Classrooms"?

TIME TO TALK ABOUT:

Many of you may know about Alzheimer’s Disease (AD): Its common symptoms, prevalence rate, precursors , and other facts. Marthe de Roo, a first-year Research Master student, wrote a blog post from a personal perspective that sheds light on other important factors.

If you are missing the Heymans as much as we are, we thought it would be a good idea to take you on a little tour through the construction site of the Heymansvleugel.
Everything is going according to plan, and, eventhough the construction still has a little way to go, this will clearly become an incredible place to study, eat and meet. It's an inviting, open space with a bigger canteen than before. Plus, studying on the upper floors will feel like sitting inside the tree canopy 🌳🌷! It's definetly something to look forward to.

ENG: "Hello garden friends, what a pity that you are not there to experience the budding of our beautiful Hortus in Groningen. Therefore, here are a few pictures so that you can still enjoy it. In the meantime, I will calmly take care of the garden here until you are back. Stay strong and stay healthy. Greetings from Cathy the gardener." 🌷🌱🍀💚

🌷🌱🍀💚 @ Psychology Department - University of Groningen

TIME TO TALK ABOUT / SAVE THE DATE / LAST CHANCE:

A few weeks ago we shared our article that introduces some of the best blog posts from 2019. Today is the last chance to vote and maybe win a book (which will be sent to you)! Seems to be a good time for something new to read, right?

MINDWISE ISOLATION STORIES

Dear students,

During this time of unrest, we at Mindwise want to help the community as much as possible. Feelings such as loneliness and sadness are perhaps more pertinent than before, and we want to give you all a chance to share, and to be inspired by others. At the end of the day, we are all in the same boat and we wish to remind you that you aren't alone.

Therefore, in the upcoming weeks, we will pose you a question every other day (check the mindwise.faces Instagram-story, we will also repost it here) and we will share what you have to say.

Our first question to you is:

What is your daily social-distancing routine?

Leave a reply in the comments below or drop us a private message on either Facebook or Instagram and be re-assured: We are all in this together!

MEET OUR STUDENTS:

"What do you think of the online lectures so far?"

“I realized that I like the tempo; the lecturer can follow his/her own pace and is not side-tracked by questions. This of course depends on the lecturer and his/her style, but the lectures I had so far were well presented. Usually when somebody asks a question in a public lecture, I get distracted and go on my phone, and it takes me a while to get back into the lecture. I like that there is constant speed of the online lectures because I don’t have the chance to look away at my phone. I really like that, because I’m more focused.

Also, since I’m in the comfort of my own room, I don’t have to worry about anybody else and can be fully expressive *laughs*. If there is something that really interests me, I can loudly say ‘wow’ or laugh in amazement. For example, when I learnt about deep-brain stimulation and its application to Parkinson’s, an otherwise crippling disorder, I was in awe. In a public lecture I can’t do that, for obvious reasons…I don’t want to be ostracised *laughs*.

In an online lecture I don’t have to worry about anything or anyone else, so I’m fully immersed in the content, however, I do miss the social aspect because that definetly has its perks.

The news that we got that all classes will be online has some worrying aspects since so much is uncertain. This unprecedented nature is also exciting, though. It’s going be an experience.”

MEET OUR STUDENTS:

“I am working for an organization that helps disadvantaged people. That’s also why I am starting my masters right now– to gain more knowledge for my current job. I really love it. You gain so much energy from working with them. Lastly, a patient of mine with dementia remembered me and lightened up, when seeing me. I was filled with happiness, because I saw and felt that there is still life in him. However, sometimes it is also very sad to see how detached people with dementia can become, but if I feel down or need to talk to somebody, I always have my best friends. With my family I am not that open about that stuff and we don’t talk so much about deeper things, because that is not how we were raised. “ -Pre-masters students

MEET OUR STUDENTS:

Student 1: "We are a little bit frustrated right now – because of the statistics report. Sometimes it is like that, but then I go jogging to relieve the stress. However, what I really like here is that the professors at RUG are helpful if you hit a roadblock. Of course, you have your duties as a student, but if you don’t know further, somebody is there to help you. I am not used to this; in my home country, you can sense a distance between staff and students and assignments. They just tell you: 'Figure it out yourself.'"

Student 2: "I also am frustrated right now, but hey – it's nice to vent to you guys right now *laughs*."

TIME TO TALK ABOUT:

The history of Psychology is a topic all Psychology students engage with in their bachelor studies. Did you ever think about merging it with Haikus? Our Professor Jeremy Burman wrote a piece introducing the history of Psychology in this special format.

March 11, 2020March 11, 2020 by Jeremy Trevelyan Burman Haiku for the history of psychology It is a truth universally acknowledged that it easier to write a long essay than it is to write a short one.
