🍄 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗶!
Beneath our feet lies a hidden world of mycorrhizal fungal networks spanning up to 110 quadrillion kilometres, enough to stretch from Earth to the Sun nearly a billion times. These fungal networks have been part of a 450-million-year-old symbiotic relationship with plants, exchanging essential nutrients for carbon. Together they are vital for keeping earth a livable place for all species. New technologies now allow us to enter this hidden world and watch it in action.

Vasilis Kokkoris is a leading researcher in this field. He uses high-resolution microscopy and advanced imaging to study how fungal cells grow and form complex networks. Through laboratory and field experiments, he explores how these networks interact with plants and bacteria, and how these interactions influence plant growth and entire ecosystems.

🍄‍🟫 Fascinating Fungi | A Hidden World Beneath Our Feet - Vasilis Kokkoris
📆 Thursday 12 November
⏰ 8 pm
📍 Academy Building, Broerstraat 5

This program is part of our new series Fascinating Fungi! In this series we take a closer look at the mesmerizing world of fungi. We explore the relationships they form with plants, listen to the sound they make, dive deeper into their medicinal properties and discover how mushrooms can be made into a t-shirt. More info will follow soon!

The Andromeda spiral galaxy, also known as Messier 31, is the closest large galaxy to our own Milky Way. It is one of a few galaxies that is identifiable with the naked eye. Over the last three decades, many observational studies, primarily with the Hubble Space Telescope, have given us a very detailed picture of the past, the present, and even the future of M31. Given its proximity, M31 provides a great opportunity to better understand fundamental astrophysical processes like star formation and stellar evolution.

In this Blaauw Lecture, astronomer Evan Skillman describes many of the recent discoveries that have been made through observations of M31. Is M31 on a collision course with our own Milky Way galaxy?

🎤 Few artists have captivated pop culture like Tupac “2Pac” Shakur. Positioning himself as a gangsta revolutionary, 2Pac rose to fame amid constant controversy, selling millions of records while making enemies in the streets, in the industry, and all the way up to the White House. In 1996, at the peak of his success, he was killed. His legend only grew in the years that followed, but the murder remained unsolved — until now. Thirty years later, the man who orchestrated the killing was found guilty, and once again, all eyes are on 2Pac.

Now that the verdict is in, hip-hop linguist and 2Pac expert Steven Gilbers revisits 2Pac’s story, showing how the contradictions that defined his life ultimately led to his death. How did a rapper born in New York become the face of West Coast hip-hop? Why would a man who wanted to unite his community tie himself to street gangs? And how are 2Pac’s speech and flow connected to all of this?

🎷 Music has the power to move us. It can also shape how we behave and connect with one another. What mechanisms underlie these effects? What happens in the brain when we listen to music? And how can music create meaningful connections between people? In this multidisciplinary program, we examine from different perspectives how music affects us individually and collectively.

Cognitive scientist Eleanor Harding explains how neurons in the brain move to the music. Choir conductor and composer Sigutė Žurauskaitė and Karolien Dons, professor Music in Context, show how we can use music as an invitation to connect with one another. The evening is hosted by Tassos Sarampalis and Kirsten van den Bosch, Auditory Scientists at the University of Groningen.

Let’s talk money!💰💸

We praten écht te weinig over geld. Dus laten we dat júíst gaan doen. Why not?
