Join us in Jakarta! 🇮🇩

Are you a Rijksuniversiteit Groningen alumnus living in Indonesia? Join us on 24 November for a special alumni networking evening in Jakarta!

Together with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Indonesia, we are bringing RUG alumni together to celebrate the past, present and future of Groningen–Indonesia collaboration.

During the evening, you will hear about the future of Groningen–Indonesia relations, attend the launch of a new book on collaborative research and hear from a recent alumna about her double degree PhD experience. Afterwards, there will be plenty of time to reconnect with fellow alumni and expand your network over a buffet dinner.

BROERSTRAAT 5 | De herfsteditie is uit!

De nieuwe editie van ons alumnimagazine Broerstraat 5 staat online! Ook dit najaar staat het blad weer vol met verhalen van alumni, bijzondere onderzoeken en ontwikkelingen binnen de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Je leest onder andere hoe onderzoekers bacteriën inzetten in de strijd tegen PFAS, waarom oudere leidinggevenden niet altijd beter omgaan met conflicten en hoe journalist en presentator Maaike Schoon terugblikt op haar studententijd in Groningen.

Op de cover staat Ninah Tiemersma, Alumnus van het Jaar 2026. Als docent Grieks en Latijn laat ze zien hoe verhalen uit de klassieke oudheid ook vandaag nog relevant zijn. Ze gebruikt eeuwenoude Griekse tragedies om met haar leerlingen in gesprek te gaan over actuele thema's als eenzaamheid, schaamte en mentale gezondheid. In het hoofdartikel vertelt Ninah over haar bijzondere aanpak en hoe ze met haar lessen een verschil wil maken voor jongeren.

MEET OUR ALUMNI ⭐ In our series ‘Meet Our Alumni’ we introduce one of our alumni to you. They tell us all about their time as a student in Groningen, their current job, and how they found a job as an alumnus of the University of Groningen! Today, we asked Tim Lefarth a few questions about his time at the UG and about his current jobs in sustainability.

📚 What study(s) did you pursue at the University of Groningen?
I studied medicine (Geneeskunde) from 2010 until 2016.

💭 What do you remember most about your time studying in Groningen?
What I remember dearest is the fun times with my many friends from the studies as well as my buddies from my sports communities at Squadraat and “the Bulldogs”. It was so easy and fun to connect to other students in Groningen.

💻 Where are you working now and what is your position?
After my studies I lived in Oldenburg, Germany where I became an orthopedic and trauma surgeon. Furthermore I conducted research on eBike related injuries and acquired my doctoral degree at the University of Oldenburg.

🔍 How did you approach finding a job? Did the University of Groningen also help you with this?
I worked another 2.5 years in Ahaus, Germany as an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement. Currently I work as an orthopedic and trauma surgeon at the Curaçao medical center. Here, I treat all kinds of trauma cases, primary knee prosthesis and revision knee replacement.

💡 What would be your advice for recent graduates?
My advice for current students would be to make the best out of the abundant options to get in contact with different people in Groningen. For professional development I recommend going abroad at least once to get a feel of different cultures and come in contact with the possibilities of working in different places and countries.

FRIENDS SINCE UNI | 👭🏼In our series ‘Friends Since Uni’, we spotlight friendships that started during student life and are still going strong today. This time, we’re introducing Cara and her friend group, who met during their studies in Groningen and have been friends ever since.

🎓How did you first meet during your time at university?
It was 2018, the very first week of our semester in Groningen. We met during the welcome week and whole navigating living in Groningen during the first days and weeks.

🔮What is your favorite Groningen memory you share?
Our love for each other, unconditional support, being able to just be ourselves and prioritising our friendship throughout these years and meeting each other at least once a year!

🤝What has kept your friendship strong over the years?
Literally all of them but maybe when we went to Brazil together - twice!!

❤️What do you miss most about your student days?
That we were around each other’s corner and saw each other daily, we would give the world to just have a quick coffee.
