FRIENDS SINCE UNI | 👭🏼In our series ‘Friends Since Uni’, we spotlight friendships that started during student life and are still going strong today. Today, we’re introducing Irene & Simon, who met during their studies in Groningen and have been friends ever since.

🎓How did you first meet during your time at university?
We met during our Psychology bachelor in Groningen, probably while studying for a statistics exam around 2012 or 2013.

🤝What has kept your friendship strong over the years?
Our friendship lasted through trust, effort, laughter, and showing up for each other through every season of life. Even though we come from very different backgrounds — Irene from Gran Canaria and me from Germany — Groningen became a shared home for both of us.

🔮What is your favorite Groningen memory you share?
We remember student life in Groningen very fondly. We spent endless hours studying together in the library with friends, but because we did it together, even the stressful periods somehow became fun. We also loved cooking dinners together in our student house, celebrating small moments, and going on trips over the years.

One memory that always stayed with us was finishing exams and cycling through the snow over a frozen lake to a sauna near Groningen. After weeks of studying, it felt like the perfect reward and really captures the atmosphere of that time for us.

❤️What do you miss most about your student days?
What we miss most is the spontaneity and togetherness of student life — sharing dinners, studying side by side, celebrating life, and simply seeing friends every day without having to plan everything weeks ahead.

The final semester is loading… 🎓✨Graduation is getting real for many UG students, so we asked our alumni one question at the Omrop Fryslân event: what advice would you give students who are about to graduate?

Here’s what they had to say! 💬

MEET OUR ALUMNI ⭐ In our series ‘Meet Our Alumni’ we introduce one of our alumni to you. They tell us all about their time as a student in Groningen, their current job, and how they found a job as an alumnus of the ! Today, we asked Rodrigo Perez a few questions about his time at the UG and about his current jobs in sustainability.

📚 What study(s) did you pursue at the University of Groningen?
I was part of the Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling. The transnational program required me to constantly recalibrate, moving through Perugia and Valencia and eventually Japan for my thesis research.

💭 What do you remember most about your time studying in Groningen?
Besides the challenges, I remember the human side. I am deeply grateful and will always remember Prof. Braam and Prof. Havenith. They offered a rare combi of professional excellence and kindness. More than just mentors, they were examples of how friendship and scientific discipline can coexist.

💻 Where are you working now and what is your position?
First and foremost, I am a father and a husband. I also work as a Sustainable Innovation Manager, but I also founded my own NGOs. At Polyhedra.eu and Polyhedralabs.eu, we bridge the gap between science, art, and ecology to develop initiatives that aim for a tangible positive impact on our planet, which also links to becoming an EU Climate Pact Ambassador.

🔍 How did you approach finding a job? Did the University of Groningen also help you with this?
I completed a PhD at TU-Berlin and the Max Planck Institute. Then I moved between diverse sectors: from a start-up focused on democratizing AI to working on chemical policy for nanomaterials. I’ve also served as an expert evaluator for the European Comission and FECYT.

💡 What would be your advice for recent graduates?
Embrace the Interdisciplinary, absorb the environment: As my school teacher once told me: let the university pass through you; you should not only try to pass through it. Let the culture and the community change how you think. A career is a series of encounters and possibilities you choose at which side of history you would be. Peace!

FRIENDS SINCE UNI | 👭🏼In our series ‘Friends Since Uni’, we spotlight friendships that started during student life and are still going strong today. Today, we’re introducing Bertram & Marc, who met during their studies in Groningen and have been friends ever since.

🎓How did you first meet during your time at university?
It was 1991. Marc met my flatmate during his lecture and it turned out we were neighbours. That was actually the start of our friendship.

🤝What has kept your friendship strong over the years?
We’ve welcomed Marc into our group of 17 Tukker-friends from Twente, as a sort of integration project (he’s from Drenthe). Everyone has since gone their separate ways, but we still go away for a weekend with that group every year and we also go out for a bite to eat together several times during the year. On top of that, there are concerts and sporting weekends such as skiing or, more recently, padel in Valencia. And there’s the unspoken understanding that if you need each other, you’re there for one another. That can be on a personal level, but also professionally. Brainstorming and bouncing ideas off each other. Never a harsh word, even though we’re quite direct with one another.

🔮What is your favorite Groningen memory you share?
The first thing that springs to mind is a party at Marc’s house. Wild! The police turned up at the door early, and the beer and other drinks ran out too quickly. But stumbling out of the pub together just as the city was waking up again, with the market stalls already set up, is also something we still vividly remember.

❤️What do you miss most about your student days?
Being carefree. As a student, the world is still wide open; you can do anything, and you feel little sense of responsibility. Now, with children and so on, the responsibility is naturally different.

WE ZOEKEN JOU!❤️
