PhD position “Joint physical custody and parents’ spatial (im)mobility”

The Department of Demography at the University of Groningen invites applications for a four-year PhD position. The project investigates how joint physical custody arrangements for children shape—and are shaped by—the spatial (im)mobility of separated parents. It will examine: (a) how joint physical custody structures or constrains spatial mobility and proximity; (b) how repartnering, with or without moving, affects distances and parenting arrangements; and (c) how gender moderates the interplay between parenting arrangements, mobility, and repartnering.
The project will use quantitative analyses of existing survey data linked to register data, complemented by an in-depth qualitative study.

Supervisory team: Dr Roselinde van der Wiel, Prof Dr Matthijs Kalmijn

Application deadline: 19 October 2025

Project descriptionThe PhD researcher will work in the project “Joint physical custody and parents’ spatial (im)mobility”, supervised by Roselinde van der Wiel (daily supervisor) and Matthijs Kalmijn (promotor). The project’s goal is to understand how joint physical custody arrangements for ...

Summer school opportunity!

"Finding Your Way in the Education-Work Transition: Mental Resilience and Social Entrepreneurship" is a summer school organised in Gulu, Northern Uganda from 15 to 26 of July 2024.

You can find more information here: https://www.rug.nl/education/summer-winter-schools/yew/

"Finding your way in the education-work transition can evoke a variety of doubts. Around the world, young people are confronted with questions like: How am I going to make a living? What kind of work would I like to do? What kind of education do I need? How can I gain meaningful experience? And on a more personal level: What am I good at? What kind of person do I want to be? What would I like to achieve? Entering the world of work is not only about possessing the right knowledge and skills, but also requires a certain attitude, self esteem and useful relationships.

In Uganda, many young people look to entrepreneurship for making a living. Some of them turn into social entrepreneurs, not only supporting themselves and their families, but also the surrounding communities. In Gulu city, northern Uganda, this asks for strong resilience as the violent conflicts of some decades ago are still part of the collective memory. The city with its large, lively market offers a valuable context for fieldwork to explore youth entrepreneurship in relation to mental resilience. The fieldwork, which is at the core of the summer school, will be prepared in interactive lectures and shared in interdisciplinary groupwork and presentations at Gulu University. The programme draws on the experiences and expertise of the UNESCO chair on Lifelong learning, youth and work. The insights gained will feed into the collective knowledge production and lead to the proposal of innovations in educational programmes."

This interdisciplinary summer school, taking place in Gulu, northern Uganda, will explore how education can play an encouraging role in sustainable...

A Senior Researcher in Reproductive Demography

Deadline for applications: 29 April 2024 (noon, UK time)

Senior Researcher in Reproductive Demography Description

We seek a Senior Researcher for a full-time, 3-year position working on a UKRI funded project (originally awarded as the ERC Consolidator Grant project SEXRATIO). This project seeks to understand variation in natural s*x ratios at birth and their implications for measuring missing women and gender discrimination more broadly. The post holder will report directly to Dr. Joshua Wilde, and will form an integral part of the SEXRATIO project team consisting of another Postdoctoral Researcher and a network of collaborators across multiple institutions. The role will offer the opportunity to focus on research at the intersection of both social and biological determinants of fertility behavior, with a heavy emphasis on maternal and reproductive health. Particular importance will be placed on the link between maternal stress and s*x-biased conception and fetal loss.

This position is based within the Leverhulme Center for Demographic Science, otherwise known as the Demographic Science Unit (DSU) within the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford. The DSU is an interdisciplinary research centre aiming to disrupt and realign how we measure and model populations, but infusing new types of data, methods and unconventional approaches to tackle the most challenging demographic problems of our time.

Requirements

To be considered you will hold a PhD/DPhil in Demography, Sociology, Economics, Statistics, Public/Population Health, Geography, Global Affairs, or a related field, AND will have had at least one year of research experience post-PhD. You will possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes, experience writing computer code in Stata and/or R for data analysis and visualisation and have excellent communication skills.
