Groningen on the map as European capital of hip-hop 🎧 🎤

Groningen has had a lively hip-hop scene for many years, but nowadays it stretches as far as the academic world. Steven Gilbers (), Assistant Professor of English Linguistics, specializing in hip-hop and African-American English, is researching the linguistic aspects of rap. He helped to compile an exhibition about hip-hop in the Groninger Museum, and arranged for an international hip-hop conference to be held in the city.

Gilbers hopes that the exhibition and the conference will put Groningen firmly on the international map as a city of hip-hop, and the UG as a global centre for hip-hop studies. ‘If it were up to me, we’d set up a Minor or a Master’s degree programme focusing entirely on hip-hop in all its facets. I think that there is both demand and opportunity for developing it, as long as the time, money, and space are made available. The Faculty and the University must not be allowed to stagnate, and a field like hip-hop studies can bring fresh momentum that will appeal to a new, and very welcome, audience.’

Research and experience show that intimidation affects the work and life of female journalists. In conflict zones, female journalists face a greater risk of intimidation and threats because of the work they do. The list of female journalists who can not safely carry out their work simply because they are women is long. Assisstant Professors in Journalism Studies, Marília Gehrke (left) and Sandra Banjac study how power structures, such as gender and class, influence journalistic work.

It's Climate Justice Awareness Week! ♻️🌳

Professor of Art History and Material Culture, Ann-Sophie Lehmann (right) from the and Ruby de Vos (Senior Researcher in Materials and Art at the Art & Sustainability research group) from are combating climate injustice through art with the large-scale Just Art project.

'How can we truly bring research to society and thereby contribute to making an impact in the field of climate justice? The core answer is simple: by seeking ways to use art and artistic research to raise awareness of climate justice,’ says Lehmann.

'Just Art is about science to society,’ says Lehmann. It brings together educational and research institutions with artists to combat climate injustice. Their research received an NWO (Dutch Research Council) grant of €6.8 million last year and explores how data on climate change can be visualized so that the impact becomes much more tangible for a wider audience. This way, it unites art and research, and theory and practice, aiming to contribute to a more just future.
