How can we design public spaces that are safe, accessible, and welcoming for everyone? Geographer Gerd Weitkamp (Faculty of Spatial Sciences - University of Groningen) studies not only how people move through their living environments, but also how they experience them. His research explores the impact of the built environment on health, well-being, and social participation, drawing on data from more than seven thousand participants in the LifelinesNL study.

Inclusive design is not about creating spaces for specific groups: it's about creating better spaces for society as a whole. A valuable perspective for anyone involved in shaping our cities, neighborhoods, and public spaces.

Wat kunnen we leren van mensen die onze stad dagelijks op een andere manier ervaren?🦽

Ontdek het tijdens Stories of This Abled City in het House of Connections van 10 t/m 12 juni. Deze tentoonstelling biedt een meerdaags, openbaar programma en bouwt voort op ongeveer tien jaar samenwerking tussen de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, studenten, kunstenaars, maatschappelijke partners en medeonderzoekers met een beperking, waaronder cliënten van 's Heeren Loo/ Noorderbrug.

Bezoekers kunnen interactieve projecten ontdekken die zichtbaar maken hoe rolstoelgebruikers plekken en routes in Groningen ervaren. Daarnaast zijn er video’s, creatieve installaties en verschillende games om te bekijken en te spelen.

On 16 June, the University of the North is represented during the RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) Self Driving Challenge.

The team consists of students from the University of Groningen, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, and Noorderpoort, joining forces to take on the challenge and competing in the open category of the Self Driving Challenge.

To gain a better understanding of the challenges posed by autonomous vehicles, the RDW organises this challenge in which ten student teams will compete against each other with their own self-driving cars. The vehicles must stop at red traffic lights and zebra crossings and navigate around parked cars. The winning team will be the one that completes the course without errors in the fastest time.

But how do you go about building a car that can respond both flexibly and safely to meet this challenge? Constança Damásio, student of Industrial Engineering and Management at the UG (Science LinX - Faculty of Science and Engineering - University of Groningen), thinks their strength this year is the diversity of the team: ‘Our broad-based knowledge gives us expertise in many areas, which means that we can switch our thinking very quickly to resolve problems.’

According to Constança, the challenge is not only valuable from a technical point of view, but also to her personally: ‘I’ve acquired so many skills in programming, simulation, and data analysis, which will be of great use throughout my future career.'

Is artificial intelligence making us stupid?

AI Professor Bart Verheij (Science LinX - Faculty of Science and Engineering - University of Groningen) thinks this is not the case, as long as we remain critical. ‘Some skills will disappear, just as we no longer do our own calculations thanks to the calculator. People are worried about their jobs because of the rise of AI, and while there are certainly many more changes to come, I have a very high regard for what people bring to the table: human value.’

Central to his research is the question of how we can make AI intelligent, which requires correct answers, comprehensible reasoning, and making ethically sound choices. In this regard, Verheij emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach which the Jantina Tammes School fosters with collaboration between disciplines and faculties.

Besides this, he argues for AI to be organized as a deliberative model. ‘The law is organized entirely as a deliberative model, as a debate. In parliament, where laws are devised and enacted, there is debate. Arguments are exchanged throughout the legal system, and that is precisely what I study. My starting point is therefore that AI must be organized in the same way as the law.’
