GDS Kalliope is de studentendebatvereniging van Groningen.

GDS Kalliope verzorgt elke maandag trainingen over debatteren, presenteren en public speaking. Kalliope is de Groningse studentendebatvereniging. Een debat kan worden gezien als een spel met verschillende partijen waarin je van te voren een standpunt opgelegd krijgt. Het doel van het debat is dat je dit standpunt zo goed mogelijk verdedigd en de jury overtuigt van jouw mening. Dit vereist niet all

een een goede mondelinge presentatie maar ook overtuigende argumenten, een goed luistervermogen en een kritische denkhouding. Door vaak te debatteren leer je om met meer zelfvertrouwen te spreken in het openbaar, probleemoplossend te denken en te analyseren. Daarnaast leer je om een goed onderlegde mening te vormen en deze overtuigend te verwoorden. Je kunt kritisch kijken naar problemen vanuit verschillende standpunten en hoofd- en bijzaken van elkaar onderscheiden. Deze vaardigheden zijn uiterst nuttig voor je studie, je carrière of gewoon in het dagelijks leven. Alle studenten zijn van harte uitgenodigd een keer te komen kijken.

We’re back, back again with workshops!
“They have the right to live”, “The fundamental rights are under threat in the case X” — we often hear different interpretations and ways to put rights into a case on the debate evenings.

This Monday our Ina Opartyová will bring her debate and law study experience to explain the ways rights can be successfully brought to a debate argument⚡️

This Monday, we are collaborating with SOG and Student en Stad to host a debating competition, open to everybody! There will be 3 rounds, with one topic each for a university, municipal, and more general issue. You'll debate in a team on the first two motions, with a final round between the best two teams. Not only will it be a fun and engaging evening, but members of our society will also be there acting as judges and guides.

Although a competition, this is the perfect evening for those who have wanted to try out public speaking, but are looking for a more accessible and relaxed format. Plus, there's a free beer on us!

RUG Debate is Back! Maybe.

RUG didn’t give us any daytime space, but our old friends at the EDanz community center have pulled through. It's a quality space, free coffee can be arranged, and most importantly, it exists. In the upcoming weeks, we'll run some workshops and motions, especially for our 8 (!) debaters who will be going to Amsterdam Open in December.

But before that, we're going to keep it fun, contentious, and consequential with American night! If there are any topics you'd like to debate, send them our way tonight. The House of Commons debate has larger teams and shorter speeches, only 1 or 2 minutes, but also time for your side to question the others. Show up tomorrow pumped, patriotic, and prone to misinformation. See you there!

As weather gets cold and exams ruin your life, know what you’re missing out on when you miss out on Kalliope!

Tonight the Estonian Debate God and Kalliope member Erik Hammer will lead a workshop on “How to Win Debates” (Much better than the “How to Lose Debates” workshop we were considering). We’ll then debate ourselves, of course!

We’re also looking for fun and hot topics for our upcoming international politics and ‘Murica nights.

Kalliope meets every Monday, 20:00, at the USVA, and we always get drinks after. Hope to see you there!

Gronignen went to Amsterdam last weekend!

We had a great time being part of NL Eloquentia, The Amsterdam Debate Association’s Activity.

Some of us even got to argue for the destruction of our home province, which was fun.

It was a great first tournament of the year, the people were cool, and we’re excited to return for the Amsterdam Open in December Thanks Bonaparte!

Tonight, we’re mixing it up!

We will be doing two House of Commons debates! This pits one half of the room against another, with set time in which anybody can question the opponent and point out how stupid and silly their argument is.

It’s faster-paced, but speeches are also much shorter, so in that way it's more competitive AND a great way to get in the groove of debate.

Tonight’s debate will be about a pill. What does this pill do? What are the consequences? Are there any greater social, political, or cultural consequences....Probably! But you'll have to come to find out. See you at 20:00!

Hi everybody! Good news….People like Kalliope!
A bit more than expected.

We think we’ll have enough space on Monday, but just to be safe, we will be starting at 19:00 for people new to Kalliope and who would like an introduction to some new debate theory, followed by a debate in English.

Can’t make 19:00? Totally fine, you can join Dutch debate, and English debate for more experienced people, which will start at normally at 20:00.

But everyone should let us know your language and debate preference, so we can expect how to divide the rooms.
