🎈 This week, a major milestone was achieved in the construction of the Bladergroen Building, the future home of University College Groningen (UCG): the highest point was reached.

🔨 Construction is progressing according to plan: the building will be completed in the spring of 2027. Preparations for the relocation of UCG from its temporary location at Hoendiepskade to the new site at Bloemsingel 1 will take place in the summer of 2027. From the 2027-2028 academic year, approximately 400 students and staff will use the Bladergroen Building.

🌳 The Bladergroen Building is located on the Healthy Ageing Campus, a dynamic area that will evolve into a vibrant part of the city center in the coming years. In collaboration with UMCG, the Municipality of Groningen, and landscape architects, a recognizable, green, and inviting environment is being created, for which the area vision was recently finalized.

👵 The Bladergroen Building is named after Wilhelmina Bladergroen, a pioneer in child psychology and the first female professor of orthopedagogics in Groningen. Her educational vision aligns closely with that of UCG. The design by Elephant / Taller architects combines an open, light wooden structure with large glass façades, seamlessly connecting to the restored monumental building dating from 1911. The sustainable pine wood construction gives the building a warm, natural appearance. The spiral staircase, connecting the upper floors, has also been installed.

🏗 To ensure a strong connection with the vibrant city square and full accessibility, the main entrance will be located in the new building. The ground floor will feature a central meeting space with a reception desk for students, staff and visitors, while the top floor will offer quiet study and concentration areas with a panoramic view of Groningen. Contractor Hegeman from Nijverdal reached the highest point at approximately 21 meters this week. The next steps include making the building wind- and watertight, followed by technical installations and interior fittings.

🇳🇱 Across the Netherlands, May 5th is a day to celebrate being free — with festivals and gatherings with live music and fun activities.

It traces back to 1945, when the country was liberated at the end of World War II.

Where May 4th is a day of remembrance and reflection, May 5th is all about celebration.

⚠️ UCG's campus will be closed for the entire day.

Whether you're down for putting the red-white-and-blue on your cheeks and dancing the day away, or getting up early to score the best vintage deals at the Vrijmarkt, King's Day has a lot to offer.

If this is your first King's Day in The Netherlands - hoo boy.. Get ready for a sea of orange. Just remember to stay hydrated and whatever you do, make sure you don't accidentally bike over to UCG hoping to dive into the books. Because we're closing the doors on April 27th!

Go forth and enjoy this little slice of the Dutch Experience. 🇳🇱👑
