Now that the sun is shining and our minds are slowly starting to drift to summer, it might be a good time to ensure that the following event is noted in your agendas. The Master Water Technology presents: the MWT introduction week!

During this week, you will be introduced to the program, Wetsus, and Leeuwarden. Most importantly, you will also meet your fellow students and get to know each other through fun activities. More details will be shared later, but for all students starting the program this September, the introduction week will be from the 26th to the 31st of August. So, save the date!

Additionally, there will be a general student introduction week in Leeuwarden known as LEIP! week, which will take place from the 22nd to the 25th of August (before the MWT introduction week). See here for more information: https://www.leip.nu/en/program/leip-markt
All in all, there's plenty to do this summer in Leeuwarden, and we hope to see you there!

Last week, we visited the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen to start the final part of our first year’s MWT program. After a lecture on business models and strategies, we learned about the different business case studies we will be working on until summer. Our cohort is now divided into four groups and has started designing the project plan to present to their specific client. The overall theme of all case studies is achieving sustainable water use and securing water quality. However, the exact clients and corresponding assignments vary quite a bit amongst the groups. From a plastic recycling company to a medical center, and from the Dutch island Schiermonnikoog to the Republic of Benin. National Test Centre Circular Plastics, Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden, Wetterskip Fryslân, and GDIZ - Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone, we are looking forward to our collaboration!

Here a small update from our classroom! We are now wrapping up our course Computational Methods in Water Technology. In a nutshell: A lot of solving of differential equations, and a lot of focused faces crouching behind their laptops trying to figure out the code in Python. Besides hard work, it's also important to take a good break and enjoy the gradually nicer weather we've been having lately! That's exactly what some of us did on the football field, with great fan support on the sideline!

Study – and career orientation might come with a lot of pondering, comparing, taking new turns, listening to your gut feeling, and maybe even some pure coincidence. It’s not always easy or straightforward.

So, of all places, how can one end up at Wetsus in Leeuwarden? What has motivated students to start MSc Water Technology, and how do they look back on it once they have finished? Daniel and Lars share their stories on how they have pondered, compared, and took new turns to find the career path that suited them best.

Yesterday was Earth Day. A day to remind us of the importance of protecting Earths ecosystems, because most resources are not indefinite and not all changes are reversible.

This year’s theme appointed for Earth Day was plastics. Fossil-fuel based plastic can be seen as a symbol for an ever-growing pile of waste ending up in landfill, soups in oceans, or in the sky as carbon dioxide, our well-known greenhouse gas. Besides, broken-down plastics, also known as microplastics, have been found almost everywhere. From our surface waters to waters in our own human bodies, and exact consequences of these microplastics are still difficult to formulate with complete certainty.

Recycle attempts and alternatives to fossil-fuel based plastics could be solutions to the plastic related problems. Here at Wetsus, a nice example is research on bacterial PHA production, which could be used as an ingredient for bioplastics. Besides, water analysis - and treatment methods are being optimized so that perhaps the issue of microplastics could be tackled as well.

Earth Day. A day to remind us to consume a little more consciously, think about the impact of our choices, and to keep finding sustainable solutions through research. In this way it might be possible to secure our Earth’s valuable resources and environments for all future generations to come (or at least do as much damage control as possible…).

After finishing your master’s degree, there are many directions you can go in with respect to your career. That is why we want to introduce you to our new rubric on the MWT website: Life After the Msc. In this section, people will be put in the spotlight, sharing their backgrounds, past career experiences, and motivations for making certain career or study decisions. For prospective MWT students, knowing potential career paths might help you with your MSc orientation! Our first person in the spotlight: Dhyana Bharath.

Dhyana is currently doing her PhD here at Wetsus as part of the research theme Groundwater Technology. She shares her enthusiasm about water, and her project on groundwater sensors using optical fibres:
“Apart from the fact that the existence of water is what made the existence of life on earth possible. I am also fascinated by its physical and chemical properties and how much of interdisciplinary fields are dependent on it.

A technology I think is the future is a non-invasive non-contact way of detection and analysis, which is being studied and applied a lot more these days. The use of light signal as in my work could be considered a part of it.”

Now the self-study and resit week has started with exams approaching, it might be a nice moment to look back on the Beta Business Days of two weeks ago. Noel, Berke, and Alexander went to Groningen to talk to prospective MWT students, and to share about PhD experiences and information on Wetsus in general. They also brought the infamous Wetsus Blue Energy demo, which impressed students that visited the Beta Business Days to look at internship opportunities at various companies. All in all, great conversations and a nice social environment with good food – like bitterballen😊.

Last week, the Aqua Nederland trade fair took place in Gorinchem. An event where many companies and institutes gathered to showcase their innovative products, services, or expertise on their focus in the water sector. Varying from supply and demand of water technology to water management services and knowledge products across various water domains: wastewater, drinking water, process water, and urban water and sewage management.

To me, Aqua Nederland sounded like the perfect event for a Msc MWT student visit😊. At Wetsus we’re already exposed to the varied water technology industry quite a bit. Nonetheless, I was still impressed to see the large number of companies and institutes that presented themselves at this event. In addition, a lot of water related challenges were covered in various talks on circularity, climate adaptation, energy transition, and ensuring water quality. Topics were covered from combining ozonation with ceramic filters to get rid of micropollutants, to new sustainable compositions of concrete as material for wastewater treatment plants. From ideologies on a new system considering both the forward and backward production line to achieve circularity, to policies that need to help establish this change.

As was illustrated at this event (and as we all know), the water sector and its related topics are incredibly diverse. It was definitely a worthwhile visit!

This week, you could find us back in the lab again! This time, the course "Biological Water Treatment and Recovery Technology" organized a practical for us in which we modeled various wastewater treatment steps and the recovery of resources (as the course name might suggest 😉). The practical began with various treatment stages for wastewater from the treatment plant in Bennekom, aiming to meet effluent quality requirements. Then, we attempted to remove phosphate through precipitation using various multivalent metal ions, demonstrating potential phosphorus recovery. Additionally, EPS (a microbial organic polymer) was extracted from different types of sludge, aiming to assess its flocculation potential.

After spending some days in the lab, the analysis of the various results has begun. So, in the coming days, you can find us behind our laptops, typing away.

It has already been over half an academic year since our cohort of students started Msc Water Technology. Besides classes, excursions, exams, and social activities, some of the students also work on marketing, promotion, and sharing stories in respect to the program.

We thought this might be a nice moment to share the faces (our faces 😉) that help behind the screens of MWT! We are Noel and Cloë:

Noel: “You will find me mostly at Open Days and talking to other Wetsus staff members about how to promote our program to Bachelor students! I enjoy giving presentations about our unique program and getting to know other students as well as working with staff members here at Wetsus and beyond.”

Cloë: “I work on the socials of the program. I joined rather spontaneously, but I do enjoy sharing our student experience and reaching out to other Wetsus colleagues to learn more about ongoing projects. I hope to share more personal perspectives from people here at Wetsus on various water technology related topics, and science in general!”

If there are any questions regarding the MWT program or if you want to contribute, please feel free to reach out to us!
